The close assist pump is in the trunk and retails for $760 and shouldn't

They are not hydraulic, they are vacuum. There is a vacuum pump for all
the doors, then each door has an actuator. If this is the car you paid
17K for, you paid WAY too much, especially since you are now finding
things wrong with it. For that kind of money, the car should have about
40k miles, perfect paint and interior, and everything should work on it.

Re: [MBZ] S320 LWB - ?? for Kaleb

2009-06-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin

Bill R wrote:

I have no idea, but the guy at the dealership said that hydraulic pump for
that door was bad, and repairs were @ $1,500, if it was a simple repair. We
knew that one didn't work when we bought the car, but even though the doors
are heavy, they close easily and FL is pretty flat. The other closers
seldom get a chance to activate as a pretty gentle push will close them
pretty well. My 92 YO 105# MiL has tried a few times to get the closer to
activate on her side and always closes the door fully herself. I am the one
who doesn't quite close the driver's door. I suppose I'd just like the car
to have everything work, and it is annoying that it doesn't, even though my
darling wife doesn't seem to care. Guess I need to do some additional
checking on that item. If it is just an actuator it wouldn't be much of a
problem.

Re: [MBZ] S320 LWB - ?? for Kaleb

2009-06-20 Thread Bill R
Thanks for the info Tom. I've been tied up with my writing project and am a
few hundred emails behind once more. I'm figuring out a few things on the
S320, though I don't get a lot of opportunity to drive it. I'm just glad my
lead footed darling wife doesn't do distance driving anymore [she covered
Gainesville to Naples some years ago when she was doing medical case
management]. She has already commented that it seems to hit 80 with no
encouragement, and when she starts wondering why everyone else on the road
is going so slowly she has learned to check the speedometer. I'm sure 140
would be next if she were on the freeway. The activated carbon filter seems
to be working ok as I only caught a sniff of smoke once, and I doubt she has
stopped just to honor the car. It is a great ride though, and the first car
that I would rather drive than my '81 300SD. Each time it has been in for
some issue the dealer has filled the tank, also. WE have yet to put any
fuel in it, and I suspect they fill it up in hopes that we will not be near
them when we first have to do so. We might come back and pound on one of
them. I'm not looking for this to save any fuel costs over her I30. That
one was bad enough at near 20 MPG, and used regular. I had them check on
the hydraulic pump on the driver's door, and that one seems to be dead. I
wonder if the pump is the same for all four doors as a replacement might be
available from a donor car somewhere. The other three and the trunk all
work fine. She says she has noticed that people seem to give her a bit of
space when she approaches intersections in this one vs. the I30.
KALEB - do you have a good hydraulic pump from a rear door that will fit
this thing?

There are three cabin filters on a W140. The recirc filter is in the
passenger footwell; the main filter is under the hood on top of the
blower motor; and the pollen filter behind the evaporator, which is a
huge PIA, costs $400, and is probably original and doesn't really work
like it is supposed to at this point. None of them are automatic, you
have to push a button to turn on the super filter. You should check and
replace the two normal filters; "dealer service" is code for "we pretend
these don't exist."

My favorite of the new tricks (other than the multilink rear suspension
and some semblance of rust protection) is the climate control
diagnostics. Start it up and hold the "rest" button for five or so
seconds, and cycle through the options with the "auto" buttons. You'll
figure a few of them out, but I can dig up the whole list if you like.

Thanks Wilton, Dave and Ed. Let's just say we own much of it. Decided to
finance part of it rather than strip down savings that much.

I'm told by another list member that this is a 140. No idea what the last
one was. I lost track after the 126 myself.

one
Sue fell in love with at first sight and drive. The variable quick
response

steering was a surprise, and the tight turning radius. It is safe, and
something she can be proud of driving. Her Infinity was showing it's age.
It is the S320, and has the LWB option. Lots of room in that back seat.
It
was not the one with the 20" rims, that one was older with lower mileage
and
a LOT cheaper. It also had a lot of things starting to go funky on it
which

suggested to me that it had not been cared for all of its life as this one
has. This was dealer maintained all the way, and has factory everything.
I

have not completely figured out what everything is as yet, but the
Parktronic is interesting. At the moment my darling wife is out giving
the

charcoal filter a test run. Though I have never seen her smoke, she has
done so since she was a kid. The air filter is automatic in case of too
much CO or some other toxin is present, though for her it will be to help
with second hand smoke. Personally I wonder how effective it might be with
self generated toxic air. We are taking it to Atlanta next month and
often
stop at a BBQ on the way, so I might find out. The only bad thing about
it

in my opinion is that it is black with dark leather interior. Fortunately
she has a parking garage at work so it won't be in the sun all day. I'm
still loving my 1981 300SD, but I sure would prefer her radio with CD
changer and cassette, and even a weather band button. I did notice one of
the hydraulic door closers was not working all the time [drivers door],
but
that is not something I think of as a necessity. The 'clean hand'
extending
trunk closer handle is also a new one on me. Seems they have come up with
a

few tricks since my 1981 was built.

We took the oft repeated advice from some on the list and paid top dollar
for a beautiful example of a 1997 S230 LWB. The car was sold and
serviced

at the dealer, and kept in wonderful condition by what seems an anal
retentive type. Service records are up to date. It has all options for
its
year, including a phone in the arm rest, and was traded on a new E class.
Here's hoping that it is as good as we are led to believe.

self generated toxic air. We are taking it to Atlanta next month and often
stop at a BBQ on the way, so I might find out. The only bad thing about it
in my opinion is that it is black with dark leather interior. Fortunately
she has a parking garage at work so it won't be in the sun all day. I'm
still loving my 1981 300SD, but I sure would prefer her radio with CD
changer and cassette, and even a weather band button. I did notice one of
the hydraulic door closers was not working all the time [drivers door], but
that is not something I think of as a necessity. The 'clean hand' extending
trunk closer handle is also a new one on me. Seems they have come up with a
few tricks since my 1981 was built.

A 230 or a 320? The one with the 20" wheels? Are you keeping those?
Congrats and good luck. ;<)
Is it really LWB?

We took the oft repeated advice from some on the list and paid top dollar
for a beautiful example of a 1997 S230 LWB. The car was sold and serviced
at the dealer, and kept in wonderful condition by what seems an anal
retentive type. Service records are up to date. It has all options for
its

year, including a phone in the arm rest, and was traded on a new E class.
Here's hoping that it is as good as we are led to believe.

Obviously I don't know much about it yet. Make that a long wheel base S320,
not a 230.
