I did it to Gump. It was a bear, and not to be done twice on purpose. It took most of the day, nowhere near 12 hours though. I might have prepped the area prior to getting it near the shop, and once done, gone back home to install all the stuff I had removed for safe keeping. On Friday, May 26, 2006, at 07:04 PM, Kaleb C. It is unlikely to fail until there is considerable noise from the area (and you have driven it a lot and it hasn't failed YET), but if the idler is more than a few degrees out of parallel with the length of belt above it, I wouldn't be taking any long trips. Be sure you have a 12 mm allen hex key/socket that will fit the lever. I'd also order new plastic front covers for the idler and tensioner lever to keep dirt out. In my experience, the belt/tensioner/shock/idler assembly require attention about every 75kmi, but not every piece needs to be replaced every time. The shock absorber seems to be the shortest lived element. The original equipment ones seem to last about 75-80kmi while the aftermarket ones seem to fail at more like half that interval (but they cost less too). If you don't use it this time you will the next time. If there is ANY deviation from parallel between the belt and the idler, either the idler or the lever OR BOTH) require replacement. If the play become extreme, the fan blade can hit the idler and if it does it can shatter taking the radiator, ATF and oil hoses with it and that CAN destroy the engine. Even if it doesn't destroy the engine, it's an expensive repair! Inspect the location of the idler with respect to the belt every time you open the hood and expect to service the tensioner system about every 75kmi (or sooner if you use aftermarket shocks). Replace the belt if there are ANY cracks on the ribbed side. I get 50-100kmi from belts (and always keep an old belt as a spare for emergency - the belt can be hard to find when you need one on a Saturday or Sunday - even some dealers don't stock them). Re: [MBZ] Serpentine Belt Lower Pivot - Need Help!
David asked:is checking on the smooth side acceptable, as long as the ribbed side isn't cracked Hi David - I think you need to look carefully at the underside of the belt - there's a place where a pulley reverses the direction of the belt and exposes the underside (on my W124 diesel it's next to the power steering reservoir) IMO, the underside if the best indication of the condition of the belt. BTW, the belt is inexpensive (less than $20 for W124 300D's) and installing it is pretty easy. If there's any question about the condition of the existing belt it's false economy not to go ahead and change it (IMHO)-- Sincerely, Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 91 300D Turbo) A Blood Test for your oil - www.youroil.net For Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Stuff http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs http://members.rennlist.com/my_911/Index.htm For my Paint Job Info - Original Message - From: David Brodbeck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, May 26, 2006 2:53 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Serpentine Belt Lower Pivot - Need Help! By checking I meant fine, shallow cracks that form a sort of irregular checked pattern on the surface. On one of my cars I have a serpentine belt that has that kind of wear on the smooth side, but the ribbed side still looks good. I'm wondering if I should change it.
Re: [MBZ] Serpentine Belt Lower Pivot - Need Help!
As usual, Marshall calls the truth without even looking at the car. An inspection of my idler shock reveals that it is spoiled (spins around, can't be tightened.) It is the source of the sound. I bought a shock and idler (to keep in the trunk with allen wrench) for future. Still haven't touched the wretched shutoff valve. AS a test, I plugged in the vacuum line to the new shutoff valve and watched from inside the car as I turned the key off. The new valve closes all the way. TIME to pull the old one out? Oh po. I've looked all over but evidently not the right place. As I mentioned - it;s a '91, W124 5 cyl 2.5 Turbo. Or should I replace a belt that shows this kind of wear? The ribbed side of the belt is clearly visible where it loops over the idler while where the belt loops over the PS pump pulley and then descends to the AC compressor, the ribbed surface is somewhat obscured. If there are any threads dangling at the side or the side of the belt seems to be frayed, I'd change the belt too. I think you misunderstood my question, due to poor word choice on my part. By checking I meant fine, shallow cracks that form a sort of irregular checked pattern on the surface. On one of my cars I have a serpentine belt that has that kind of wear on the smooth side, but the ribbed side still looks good. I'm wondering if I should change it. I've never seen that pattern on any of the 15-20+ belts I've had on my cars. If the belt seem pliable and supple I expect I'd go with it (but ALWAYS carry a spare belt). I change the belt whenever I do work on the tensioner (unless it's been very recently changed) and keep the best of the old belts as spares. These belts seldom fail without clear visible and audible warning well before they actually do fail, but you do need to pay attention. If the belt makes noise FIND OUT WHY and fix it!
