Tons of room in a W116's wheel wells.
Mine had BIG tires on it when I bought it, like 215,225, or 235R78-14.
Got something like 28mpg driving it home from Florida, the low rpm
tires might have had something to do with that.

I've had both on the '83 240D. The 185s steer more precisely.
The 195s are more flat footed. They want to keep going in the same
direction, so steering is more like doing course corrections.
These are very small differences noticed only after long familiarity with
each tire.
Currently I use 195/(70?)R/14s on both cars since they are more widely
available with a choice of more brands. Their flat-footedness becomes
unnoticed after a while.

Just so it's clear, 205 is the _width_ of the tire in mm. 75
is how tall the tire is expressed as a percentage of width. So
205 x 0.75 = 154 mm tall.

Thanks, Phillip. Can probably measure the max spring travel, add it to the
tire height, check the width available at the top of the fender, and get a
crude idea of the biggest tire that wouldn't touch the fender if the axle
bottomed out. Next time in Tampa or Orlando I might be able to find a

keep in mind too, two different brands of tires of the same size can fit
different. not a big problem usually, but if you're really pushing the
limit of what will fit, it may. I believe width is measured from sidewall
to sidewall, not tread face, so, how two tires of different brands behave
when put under a cornering or braking load, may be different. So if you go
larger, and one brand fits, be sure to have a good look for any rubbing if
you change brands, even if same size.

Good idea. Since Goodyear is one company that makes the 205 - 75 - 14,
maybe I'll check their tire stores first for used tires in that size. If

tire height, check the width available at the top of the fender, and get
 a
crude idea of the biggest tire that wouldn't touch the fender if the axle
bottomed out. Next time in Tampa or Orlando I might be able to find a
couple of used tires for next to nothing just to try, and then get new
 ones
if they work. Might even find a couple of spare rims at the PNP.

Thanks for the comments, Ned - I know this question depends larhely on tire
brand type, but did you notice an unusual increase in tire noise with the
fatter tires?

I agree with Herr Doktor. On a 124, 195/ 65-15's handle the best by far.
I've used several sets of 215/60 -15's, and they felt heavy, though
smooth.
Righ now I have a set of 205/60-15's on one of my 124's and they feel
almost

identical to the 195/65's.
Depending on brand of tire, I've found the rev's per mile for all the
above

sizes within 1% to 3% of being he same.

Larry:
I suspect brand and type of tire have a lot more influence on road noise
than tire size.
Never owned two sets of tires that were identical except for size. So I
can't tell for sure.

What I can tell you though ..
Michelin Pilot VGTs in 215/60 -15 seemed very quiet.
Dunlop SP - A2's in that same size were ridiculously noisy.
My Potenza's in 205/60-15 are very new. And so far very quiet.
My Nokian 195/65-15 WR are not perfectly quiet, but very acceptable.

Thanks for the info Ned. I'm a fan of Potenza's also - I've had several
sets over the years and for my driving style they're perfectly acceptable.
I have a set on the 240D but talking about tire noise on that car is silly!

But my 91 300D is very quiet and tire noise *is* a factor on it.

Thanks again -

Re: [MBZ] Tire Sizes

2006-03-16 Thread OK Don
My '90 300D came with 205/65-15 tires. They should be too big, but the
stop watch says the speedo is right on at 75 mph (don't have a GPS
yet). Since I've never driven it with anything else, I don't know if
it's heavier than normal, but I like the way it drives, so I'm
replacing them with the same size --
However, I've NEVER heard of anyone regretting following the good
doctor's recommendations.

The proper replacement for a 195/65x15 in a 60 series (to maintain the
correct speedometer calibration) would be a 205/60x15 (and I've tried
 replacing a 185/65x15 with a 195/60x15 in a 201 series car). I've tried
these. They're fine on the highway, but the car feels heavy in
traffic. The 195/65x15 tire that Mercedes choose, really does make the
car handle optimally for the way I drive.

I drove for almost 7 years (75-80kmi) on a set of 205/65x15s on my
300TD. Speedometer was within 1-2% and they felt just FINE, UNTIL I
switched back to 195/65x15s - MUCH lighter feel and nimble handling. A
little more extreme than switching back from 195/60x15 to 185/65x15s on
my 190Ds.

I'm going to dissent here. I have 205/60-15s on my 124 and am fixing to go
to 215/55-16s (on lightweight CLK wheels). I think the wider the better (as
long as they don't rub or stick out, of course). There's more steering
effort at low speeds, but also more controllability at high speeds. There's
a reason the factory put fatter tires on the 500E!

Re: [MBZ] Tire Sizes

2006-03-16 Thread Dave M.
Alex pointed out somthing important that had been missed in prior
posts. On the ORIGINAL wheel size (15x6.5), the 195/65 tire is
optimal, as Marshall and others said. A plus-one fitment isn't bad if
you really want to do that (205/60).

Anything else really requires a larger WHEEL... either wider, or
larger diameter, or both. For any given wheel size, there is really
only one optimum tire size, with maybe a second or third size that's
acceptable. If you stick with what MB mounts from the factory you're
usually ahead of the game.

I've got W203 Sport wheels on my car (17x7.5) with the factory tire
size (225/45/17) and they work great. Extremely precise handling, but
a little firmer than stock, naturally. Note that the 225/55/16 tires
on the 500E were mounted on 16x8.0 wheels (and the 500E had flared
fenders to swallow the larger setup.)

Re: [MBZ] Tire Sizes

2006-03-16 Thread ned kleinhenz
One last comment (from me anyway) about tire sizes.
The 124's require tires rated 91 H.
Some tire models, like Bridgestone RE 950 at 196/65-15 are rated 88 H.
So I selected the RE 950's in 205/60 to get that rating up to 89 or 90 H (I
forget which one).

The attraction of many tires at 215/60-15 is their load rating is often 93
or 95.
My limited personal data shows the higher load rating gives a long tire
life.
On the downside, the larger tires are heavier, giving your running gear more
unsuspended weight.

[MBZ] Tire Sizes

2006-03-15 Thread l02turner

Hello,
My 91 300D calls for 195/65-15 tires. Has anyone tried any other sizes?
Like 195/60-15 for instance? Or even 165/50(or 55)-15?

Just curious. I guess a case could be made for going to a smaller
size - like 185/65-15 perhaps?

I know MB probably spec'd the best size, but you never know --
