Re: [MBZ] We've sprung a leak

I ran up to the PnP and scored three pans. One from a TE, the other two W126.
Fresh seal and a used pan. Good as, used

Re: [MBZ] We've sprung a leak

2016-11-18 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
When I first got the 87 300D, I changed fluid and filter.and drove it.
It leaked ATF pretty bad until the oil change. After I got the leaks
pretty well stopped it it seemed fine. THen I parked it for a couple
days.Came back and the puddle was almost from the rear wheels to the
front wheels.I refilled the trans and drove it. Put a bottle of the
stop leak/ gasket softener stuff in and its been fine for the past 9
yrs. List speculation at the time was that the TC puked and it went on
the ground.

That sounds fine to me. I'm curious to hear other ideas.

Maybe Mobil 1 ATF will restore whatever seal keeps the torque
converter from draining?

I am not sure, but the TC could have done something like that. I had
drained it as part of the filter change. Put less than enough ATF in
before doing a big drive about to get the system hot. Around 15 miles
in 3. When I got home I put a few cups in to get enough fluid on the
stick to hit the low mark while the engine was running. Rowed through
the gears a few times to get all the fluid around before and after the
drive and top off.

Torque converter drained into the pan while it was sitting? My wagon
will do that after sitting for weeks and weeks. The normal ATF level
in the pan is below the pan lip seal, so no leaking, but if the torque
converter drains down into the pan, level goes over what the pan can
contain and it can leak.

You may need a new pan to contain the leak.
clay via Mercedes

I did the ATF change a few days ago. Took it for a drive, checked
level, got under and looked for leaks. The thing was buttoned up
tight. Dry as it has never been, and clean.

Today, I go out to try to take the SDL for an errand and it will not
fire off. There is a wet shadow all under the car. At a glance it
looked like rain that had yet to dry. Closer, and it looked red and
there was a drip coming off the passenger rear corner of the pan. Lots
of fluid, maybe a cup or so on the ground. I had to hook up the
charger for a few hours to get enough electrons for it to light off,
then drove it up a ramp.

When I got under, I could see what looked like damp along the seal
from mid pan bolt to the rear bolt. I brake cleanered it and waited to
see what happened. There was a second drip. It was coming from midline
at the rear of the pan, and though small beads, it was faster than the
side. I loosened the two bolts to see if that would hasten or slow the
leakage. It did not. I was very careful in making sure the seal had
seated well and wiped the mating surface at the trans. The seal is new
and supple. Had been lubed with atf both inside and out. What could be
going on?

I will have to drop the pan and refill if I am not able to get this
thing to really seal.

[MBZ] We've sprung a leak

2016-11-18 Thread clay via Mercedes
I did the ATF change a few days ago. Took it for a drive, checked level, got
under and looked for leaks. The thing was buttoned up tight. Dry as it has
never been, and clean.

Today, I go out to try to take the SDL for an errand and it will not fire off.
There is a wet shadow all under the car. At a glance it looked like rain that
had yet to dry. Closer, and it looked red and there was a drip coming off the
passenger rear corner of the pan. Lots of fluid, maybe a cup or so on the
ground. I had to hook up the charger for a few hours to get enough electrons
for it to light off, then drove it up a ramp.

When I got under, I could see what looked like damp along the seal from mid pan
bolt to the rear bolt. I brake cleanered it and waited to see what happened.
There was a second drip. It was coming from midline at the rear of the pan,
and though small beads, it was faster than the side. I loosened the two bolts
to see if that would hasten or slow the leakage. It did not. I was very
careful in making sure the seal had seated well and wiped the mating surface at
the trans. The seal is new and supple. Had been lubed with atf both inside
and out. What could be going on?

I will have to drop the pan and refill if I am not able to get this thing to
really seal.
