I'm glad somebody saw what I was getting at too. You never know how far you 
have to spell something out.

What amazes me is that our president claims to be a "conservative" but then 
spends all this money so foolishly. He's not a fiscal conservative anyway...

There are so many benefits to processing them quickly:
1) Cost
2) Good will
3) Cost
4) Free up personel
5) Cost

The approach that was taken was pretty stupid in my opinion. Building
a big backlog of prisoners is a waste of resources.

I don't care if we kill them or send them home. I'm with you a Military 
Tribunal should have been setup immediately in '03 (!) and these guys should 
have been delt with immediately. Holding them for 5+ years to "get further 
information" is TOTALLY unacceptable. Get 'em in, decide their fate and get 'em 
out.

We were discussing GC in relation to Gitmo. As far as I am concerned
those are POW's and have right to a military tribunal at the *very*
least. They are all certainly wearing orange uniforms now aren't they?

Wait... Haven't we held some of these guys for years just for standing on the 
wrong street corner? Then we dump them back in Iraq and they're killed because 
people there assume they're bad guys or they assume they ratted out the bad 
guys.
Or we dump them back home and their house has been taken over and they've got 
no money and so they become crimials or insergents.

The US, making friends every way we can...

Again, you are applying the constitution to people not under the 
constitution.  These are not kids who stole a candy bar.  They are 
people who were in essence shooting at our troops, be it literally or 
figuratively, in building, transporting or setting IEDs, or 
whatever.  In the term  of recorded history those types are held at 
least until the end of hostilities.  No trials are needed.  Many 
times they are executed, on the spot or later, and seldom with a 
trial.   Again, read your history.  If they were a uniformed army, 
they would be called POWS.  In this case they are not POWs.  No 
country in history has held trails for every POW captured.

In any case, they certainly are not granted the right of trial in US 
courts.  A military trial, in some cases, but never in the US court system.

Either they are treated under the GC and have a right to a military
tribunal *OR* we are holding them against their will as citizens of
Iraq. Against US law, against Cuban law and against Iraqi law.

I should think that the base is deemed to be US property and as such, the rules 
that apply in the continental US
should apply there to.

The usual view is that it is better to let the guilty go free than to punish 
the innocent. That is why there is a
presumption of innocence and the criminal standard is normally "beyond a 
reasonable doubt".

I'm not so sure that "most of the world" does it the other way. I would think 
that a very large part of the
civilized world is based upon the English common law system and applies a 
pretty common standard.

Unfortunately, there are regimes that vary the rules for political power but 
surely we do not wish to be one of
them.

You are correct. Usually our POW's are not treated under the GC because
we are fighting aggressors as a defendor. Aggressors tend not to fight
by the rules as they have already broken them. The GC gives us a *legal*
way to punish those captors who do not follow the GC. We can do it via
military tribunal OR the Hague. And yes, I have no problems with them
being hung or shot.

The point is that we are the "Greatest Nation on Earth" or so you would
have us believe given by your "Obama Lovers" statement. In reality most
modern nations all have their issues. But as long as we are going to
preach the propaganda we should atleast have the will, the guts and the
determination to practice what we preach. Sinking to their level makes
us nothing but yellow bellied cowards, because that is what they are.

Again, you are applying the constitution to people not under the 
constitution.  These are not kids who stole a candy bar.  They are 
people who were in essence shooting at our troops, be it literally or 
figuratively, in building, transporting or setting IEDs, or 
whatever.  In the term  of recorded history those types are held at 
least until the end of hostilities.  No trials are needed.  Many 
times they are executed, on the spot or later, and seldom with a 
trial.   Again, read your history.  If they were a uniformed army, 
they would be called POWS.  In this case they are not POWs.  No 
country in history has held trails for every POW captured.

In any case, they certainly are not granted the right of trial in US 
courts.  A military trial, in some cases, but never in the US court system.

However, MOST of the world uses a system of Napoleonic Justice which simply put 
is "Guilty until proven Innocent"

I could care less about creature comforts... thats a totally different 
issue.  We are talking about what our country has defined as the right 
to a speedy trial.  They are being denied that right, and for all 
intents and purposes were being held indefinitely (hopefully they will 
have trials now).

Now before you go saying that I'm a terrorist and want to set them all 
free that isn't the case at all.  I am all for a fair trial to prove 
them guilty WITH EVIDENCE and dole out whatever punishment the court 
deems necessary.  I imagine there will be quite a few death row sentences.

people go free before one innocent person goes to jail.  It seems to me

most of them have ever had in their life.  The guys who are 
mistreated are the GIs who have to guard the scumbags.  Have you ever 
talked to any of the poor guys that have to guard these scum?  The 
scum there are treated far better than they deserve.  They think we 
are ridiculous for treating them so well.

The prisoners in our state pen had way more comforts when I was 
growing up than I did.  Color tvs, at a time when few households had 
color.  Cable tv when few households had cable.  not allowed to work 
to repay their victims, or (perish the thought) pay for their 
keep.  I had to work my butt off for no pay.  Few of the families I 
knew had it so plush as the prisoners.

Just curious, Loren -- how many years did you spend in the military? You
seem to be really big on preserving our freedoms and the perceived
traditional American way of life, at any cost or philosophical compromise. I
am confident that you were willing to invest at least four years of your
life defending same by serving your country in uniform.

I would also question the phrase "historically illiterate Obama lovers." Why
do you assume that anyone who prefers Obama to McCain might not be educated
-- or at least well read -- in the field of history and, perhaps equally
important, political science?

killed there?

I am always amused when people are willing to toss out the moral 
equivalence argument whenever it suits them.  But I take your point, 
well-put, about stooping to the level of the savages, and can't really 
disagree with it -- my point was that the GC was put together to cover 
national military activities, not a bunch of random a-h's fighting to 
kill anyone who happens to disagree with them on whatever stupid 
savagery they are touting at the moment.  They and their supporters fall 
back on the GC argument (which strictly speaking does not apply to them) 
whenever you catch one who has sawn off someone's head with a dull 
blade, or tried to blow themselves and/or others up, or done some other 
savagery.  Their buds think we are a bunch of fools, and play on that 
very well.  But then again showing our better way does seem to have 
convinced a lot of folks that our way is indeed better, and maybe that 
is the path that will work as it has in the past (along with some AC-130 
action from the high ground).

When we go to war in order to "free" the Iraqi people in the name of
democracy we *should* apply the same principals that made this country
great. That includes the freedoms and liberties given to us by said
document. Gitmo detainees are non combatants and should be extended
those same rights or they should be treated as prisoners of war and
handled under the Geneva convention.

Where does is say anywhere in the Constitution that those rights and
liberties granted *only* apply to citizens? Note the word posterity in
the preamble.

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect
Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility
, provide for the
common defence , promote
the general Welfare
, and secure the
Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity
, do ordain
 and establish this
Constitution for the United States of America."


Have any Gitmo detainees been found guilty of any crime? If not then we
have kidnapped civilians from a foreign country. If someone did that to
us it would be an act of war (hello Iran in the 70's).

Wow... just wow.  I'm not even going to bother arguing with you.  No 
matter what evidence is presented to you, irregardless of the evidence's 
merit, you will twist it or discredit it so you can continue to support 
your view.  I respect the right for you to have that view, and I truly 
hope that our ability to argue/discuss these types of topics in any 
form/fashion continues for the foreseeable future.  IMO, Obama will do 
more to preserve that than McCain.. just look at McCain's opinion of 
giving habeas corpus to Gitmo detainees.  So much for respect of the

because Islam is the world's largest religion per capita? In actuality, the

Twisting this off onto another topic but it is sometimes difficult not to sound 
like we are whining. The whole

sheep and followed the herd like
everyone else. I particulary feel that way because I have traditionally tried 
to be conservative when it comes to
things like fuel economy and now find myself sitting with a fleet of guzzlers 
wondering how I ended up in that
spot. Even my so called frugal old diesel isn't an efficient one and now diesel

when i was a kid, the neighborhood was our small town.  there was  a good
sized hardware/department store called "wainrite's".  me and my friends

no, it's just the feminization of america

when i was a kid, the neighborhood was our small town.  there was  a good
sized hardware/department store called "wainrite's".  me and my friends
would roam around there as we had nothing better to do.  they would throw us
out.

they had a security guard who looked like a giant to us.  he'd see us, grab
us by the neck, carry us to the door and literally throw us out.  we would
then wait until he was out of earshot and give him a few choice racial slurs
and discuss how lucky he was that we didn't want to get in trouble or his
ass would be kicked.

this was just life.  we weren't upset or traumatized, but just had to move
on to another playground.  if i went him and told my dad what happened, he'd
go down to the store and congratulate the guy for not putting up with our
punk kid bs and commend his restraint for not beating the tar out of us.

today this would be a national scandal, especially if peanut dust was
present.

the rise of women has created a faggotized nation of whiners and
allergetics.

Guess I don't think Bush, Cheney or even Powell are cute enough to be the
answer there.  To each their own... Prohibition was a bad idea, as is most
every attempt to legislate morals.  We need to do it for theft and murder
and such, but Carrie Nation and her axe did go too far, and you could carry
that to the next level [which someone - you? - on the list did] and say that
when prohibition was over the 'drug wars' started to put the enforcers into
a similar job.  I'd be a bit reluctant about saying that the current drug
situation and Iraq were caused by the women of our country voting based on
sexual desirability though.

(1) He *should* be a muslim per his "father's" choice of religion, but 
he has supposedly renounced or ignored that, so he is an apostate in the 
eyes of the true believers, and as such should be killed (per their 
beliefs).  I think that being an apostate is worse than being a dog, 
pig, or Jew, but I'm not sure on that fine point.  (I'll have to check 
the latest fatwas.)  Kindy scary, huh?

(2) Whether he used a Quran, a Bible, or a Sunday flyer from Walmart, it 
doesn't matter anyway -- he's a slick politician (not as slick as
BJ though) who will say and do whatever he needs to say and do to get 
someone's vote.

You asked a silly question, so last night I gave you a silly answer.
After sleeping on it, I decided to give you the serious version of why I might 
merely oppose the usual socialist candidates like HRC, but refuse to tolerate 
Barack Hussein Obama.

1. Whatever scum floats to the top of the leading cesspools of criminally 
corrupt politicians is automatically highly suspect. (New Orleans and Chicago 
occupy the top two spots on that list)

2. Any scum who wins his first election by having the other four candidates 
removed from the ballot is no longer suspect, his own actions have convicted 
him 
of treason against the principals behind our system of government. BHO is no 
more in favor of free elections than Robert Mugabe is, and that is enough to 
make him unsuited to hold office as the local dogcatcher.

i just figured he was mainly about only criminals having guns, but you learn
something new every day.

if not for women's suffrage, we wouldn't even need to worry about this freak
(or, for that matter, most of america's woes).  women vote solely based on
who they find sexually attractive and obama is a heck of a lot hotter than
mccain.
