Rather than crawl under the Smartcar there is a lever for flipping it over
turtle-like for easy access to the power train underneath...

Well if they are talking about oil changes every 12,000 miles, and
service checks every 25,000 miles they are really
into the consumer doesn't need to get access to the engine now. Most
I guess will run until the idiot lamp (needs service) comes on, most
interesting one is when water separator becomes full because local
(low volume) diesel station is selling water infested diesel fuel,
then engine stops Still it warns you, but people report warning
versus stopping is iffy... I *belive* the new one is using different
engines, not MB made, so I cann't comment on how they will work.

Versus the weekly check on the two diesel with flashlight to see if
anything odd (or leaking) is happening.

[MBZ] smart USA vehicle announced

2006-11-10 Thread John M McIntosh

http://www.clubsmartcar.ca/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6445

gas engines at 61/71/84 (turbo) hp rated at 47 mpg
diesel at 45hp, 3.5 liters/100Km say 68 mpg

pricing starts at $11,000 usa

Oh and new transmission and shift pattern etc to improve nasty
shifting issues. Interesting to read Consumer reports test drive

complaints then compare to reengineering done for this new vehicle.

Don't ask to look under the hood. There isn't one. All servicing is done from
under the car. Don't know if there is
an oil dipstick somewhere.

Service interval is 40K km, with oil change every 20K km for the gas
model. Having an oil dip stick is just asking for
someone to ask were is the motor anyway, can't seem to get the front
hood open...

Did you read the link? The new car is supposed to have a bonnet, along with a
few
other improvements, like a 5sp tranny (hopefully a taller top gear for
cruising).

145K km, electronically limited, the chipping folks will have fun,
also water cooled turbo, again someone will

figure out upper boost limits.

No, I am in Canada. I just went down to the MB dealer and sat in one. Asked the
salesman to open the hood and he
said no can do. Showroom floor was nice and shiny clean so got down on my knees
and had a look under. Maybe the gas
version will be different.

From the discussion in the link posted earlier, it appears the 2008
models imported in USA will be a redesigned car. I wonder what that
means for the resale value of the 2007 and earlier models?

Well assuming you sat in an old one, versus the one talked about in
the press release the engine is located in the back under the hatch
on the floor, the engine lurking there is the size of a large
microwave. He could have shown you the dip stick and the oil filler
cap. Perhaps he was confused when you mentioned Hood, you should
have asked to see the engine.

He did open the back hatch and lift a lid (if I recall correctly - it was
months ago) on the floor but it was just
a storage compartment. I did not ask about a dipstick but he did say it is
designed to be serviced on a hoist from
underneath.

They seem pretty popular here. I see them daily. Several used for advertising
with decals and signs on them and
some used for Pizza delivery etc. Also see people driving them that are
obviously just driving like they would any
other car. They are still unique enough that you notice them even if they are
not a bright color. I saw a young
woman driving one on Tuesday after lunch. It was black.
I doubt if changes will affect the value of existing ones by much. Like any
other car, used is used and prices will
fall somewhat with age. There does not seem to be a shortage now as the dealer
has a line of them on the lot.
