Reminds me, this summer we traveled to Italy again, and one of the museums

Very fierce fighting there between Germans and Allies (U.S. Army, Brits of
course, and French forces) along the Gustav line. Reportedly more civilian
deaths caused by land mines than all casualties on both sides caused by the
hostilities. A lady we know there in Italy was only about 3 months old
when her mother was killed by a mine, her father was already dead, and
there were no living relatives to care for her so she was raised an
orphan. She visited the museum with us, and really enjoyed it.

The museum is run by a non-profit, all volunteers from the local community,
and they still are finding artifacts from the war. While we were there,
they showed me a U.S. helmet that was remarkably well preserved, found that
day in a nearby river, where some GI had probably dropped it nearly 80
years ago.

The French forces were mostly recruited from their colonies in Africa, IIRC
they were Moroccan, and they had a terrible reputation for very fierce and
brutal fighting vs. the Germans and unfortunately also abusing the
civilians when they weren't fighting. Abusing is putting a very kind face
on it. They wore stripped tunics and white turbans, and the French
officers paid them a dollar per ear taken from a German. More than a few
pictures of these soldiers on display, and they did indeed look pretty
rough and fierce.

There were pieces from a Spitfire that had crashed, which they traced back
to the pilot who had been flying at the time, pilot had bailed out safely
and continued fighting the rest of the war and just died about ten or
fifteen years ago.

They also had found the remains of a German solder, which they returned to
Germany. The guy was just 17 when he died. They had pictures from the
German officials who came to retrieve the remains, and pictures from his
burial ceremony in Germany, and some letters and such around that episode.
German dog tags back then didn't have a name, just a serial number, and
were made to easily break in half. This was so that when a soldier died,
one half was collected for recording his death and the other half stayed
with the body. This set of remains had the complete dog tag, so they knew
he was a MIA that could now be recognized as a KIA.

The place has a facebook site, but I don't know what that is. They really
need a real website, but run on a shoe-string budget.

One section of the museum displays how the locals used the war refuse to
make things they needed. Helmets got a hole punched in the top and made
into a hanging lamp, or had a handle riveted on and made into a pot. Brass
shells from artillery made into flower vases or watering cans or decorated
to commemorate some event. Uniforms where turned inside out so the liner
was displayed instead of the military pattern on the outside (German
mountain troop uniforms were best for this, they were designed to be
reversible, one side was a grey / black camo pattern, other side was white
to blend into snow). There was a wedding dress using the white from that
type of uniform.

Wilton,

Did you move to an all-new computer, or just upgrade the OS and/or the
email client?

I've still got Win7 on our home laptop, SWMBO is used to that and whichever
version of Outlook is on it (I think 13?), so I'm going to hold on to that
as long as possible to avoid hobbling her with learning a new tool. I also
don't have much time to devote to that sort of thing.

Re: [MBZ] test

2019-08-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
When I was in college I worked for the IT group for one year. This was one of
the real old school IT groups where you had to kiss the ring of the boss etc.At
the end of the school year they laid off my manager which was a shame, the guy
was great. The rest of us refused to kiss the ring and were not re-hired the
next year. Unfortunately for them we had already penetrated the network and
could do what we wanted.
We knew they were monitoring our email so we instituted strict security
protocols that included encrypting everything with PGP (Pretty Good Privacy).
The encryption scheme would take 1 line of text and turn it into a paragraph or
a paragraph into a page etc. So the amount of traffic stayed the same but the
volume of each message jumped dramatically.
It wasn't long before the 5 ringleaders (of which I was the least technical but
most scheming) were hauled in to account for ourselves. They rolled out "We
know you're up to something, we don't know what but you better tell us or
else!" We kept our mouths shut knowing there wasn't anything they could do to
us, even if they could decrypt our messages it was all mundane stuff like "What
time is dinner?" any actual scheming we did in person, off campus.
When I graduated the president of the college shook my hand for a second longer
than everybody else "I'm not sad to see you go." We laughed, it was great.

Take a gander at the mapz of Goog. The town is a literal residential dead end.
Maybe that is the new thing, but I come from a world were streets line up in
some manner and you are able to get to other places from here. ANC has few
residential roads that are not dead ends. Subsections and lost tails into the
wilderness.

One neighborhood is built up in an old gravel mine, which is maybe 10 meters
below grade. A rather deep bowl that will fill with Home Depot houses and will
flood in a 100 year downpour

Re: [MBZ] Test Message

2019-07-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
My former next door neighbor is a “forensic HVAC investigator”. In other words,
he works for insurance companies, identifying the part HVAC systems play in
losses their insureds encounter. I had been talking to him about putting a
solar powered attic fan in the house to get the attic temperatures down. He
told me that before I did anything like that I should seal the “envelope” as
tightly as I possibly could.

Seems that people will go and put an attic fan in, thinking it will reduce the
heat load on the living space by making the attic cooler. In reality, what
often happens (according to him) is that the attic fan creates a negative
pressure in the attic, which sucks conditioned air out of the living space
through all the little racks and gaps that exist in every house. As a result,
costs to condition the living space often go up after doing this, not down.

So he cautioned me to seal up the house as best I could and then put an attic
fan in, as long as the attic is properly ventilated (which is already was.)

In my former house I went in the attic and caulked all the wall and wallboard
joints, sealed the light fixtures, and caulked all holes for wiring, etc. Made
a big difference. The interior walls act like chimneys and pull air in from the
outside. The results are amazing.

Until recently it wasn’t an option as we stored stuff up there. I’ve moved

When we lived in Austin, Texas, I helped our landlord put insulation in
the garage's ceiling. Like your brother, Peter, we found it was quite
helpful.

It does sound like it's time for some insulation!

Our Big Room is insulated, but it heats up quite noticably during the day
while the Long Room, where we live, stays cool. I'm thinking the
translucent "skylights" are a significant contributor to that.

At night, it's the reverse, so I open the door between the rooms to let
the cooler air from the Big Room flow into the Long Room.

Re: [MBZ] Test Message

2019-07-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I just snagged the biggest window unit (12,000 BTU?) I could off of Craigslist
and popped it in the window. I had to run a circuit over to that side of the
garage from my distribution panel which is on the opposite wall of the garage
and add a breaker to the panel.

I have an slightly oversize two car garage. In 90 degree heat like today, I had
the boy roll his car in about 9:00 am and turn on the AC. By 10:00 it was
pretty comfortable. It’s not so much the temp, but taking the humidity out
really makes it so, so much better. Otherwise we would be sweating our brains
out and soaking wet.

My electric bill is getting hammered by it, but I don’t care. I noticed that my
bill was up to $190 for last month, but considering the time of year and the
amount of time I ran the thing I’m not at all unhappy. Without the garage AC I
think the bill would have been more in the $160-$170 range, so $20-$30 is a
small price to pay for making it possible to work in the garage this time of
year without being totally miserable.

If I insulated my garage door it would probably be even better, as a LOT of
heat passes through it. I can stand by it late in the afternoon with the garage
AC on and feel the higher temperatures within a foot or two of it.

Agreed.

When everyone around here is complaining about how hot and humid it is, I’m
wondering how it’s any worse that when I was a kid growing up in the Midwest.

Central Indiana in the mid to late summer was just this bad, so humid it was
like getting poured into a bucket. And when we were working in August in the
field, like baling hay, we were wearing jeans and long sleeved shirts! I can
even begin to describe what it was like working in greenhouses during that time
of year, especially when we were closed up tight and sterilizing the beds with
live steam...

I will say that it did cool down somewhat at night, but the days were just as
blistering hot and humid as they are now.

for the boys and girls fighting wildfires. Today will be a stretch to make 15c
and that will bring more smoke? Not sure how that functions. No cars to work
on, little in the way of yard to screw with, been rather moist in SEA, so I
will probably have tall grass to mow when I return in a week.
