Re: [MBZ] touchups
You made this far more difficult than necessary, I think. I just use the formula: .7x = .5 which equals .7143 or 71.43% Where the .7 represents 70% isopropyl alcohol and .5 represents the 50% dilution I want. 1 - .7143 = .2857 or 28.57% Meaning that any bottle I fill using 70% isopropyl alcohol should contain 28.57% water, no matter what the size. So a 16 ounce spray bottle should have 28.57% distilled water (4.6 ounces) and 71.43% isopropyl alcohol (11.4 ounces). You could change the .7 value to represent whatever dilution of isopropyl alcohol you have. That’s not difficult math. -D > On Aug 11, 2017, at 11:46 PM, Craig via Mercedes> wrote: > > On Fri, 11 Aug 2017 16:20:54 -0400 Dan--- via Mercedes > wrote: > >> True, but I was alluding to stronger stuff such as paint solvents and >> things like my go to solvent, 3M Adhesive Remover. > > OK. I usually go for the highest concentration I can get, > typically in the 90% range, which makes it a little easier to do the > math. With some trial and error, I figured out how to calculate it (I'll leave the details of the derivation out): Volume of water - = 2*p - 1 Volume of alcohol mixture where p = fraction of alcohol in alcohol mixture (for 70%, p = 0.7) So, for 70% alcohol mixture, Volume of water - = 2*0.7 - 1 = 0.4 Volume of alcohol mixture Thus, Volume of water = 0.4 Volume of alcohol mixture For 91% alcohol mixture, Volume of water - = 2*0.91 - 1 = 0.82 Volume of alcohol mixture Thus, Volume of water = 0.82 Volume of alcohol mixture Checking: For 100 ml (could also be ounces) 70% alcohol mixture and 40 ml added water, Alcohol = 70 ml Water = 30 ml (from mixture) + 40 ml (added to mixture) = 70 ml Checking: For 100 ml (could also be ounces) 91% alcohol mixture and 82 ml added water, Alcohol = 91 ml Water = 9 ml (from mixture) + 82 ml (added to mixture) = 91 ml Craig ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] touchups
It is, however, it's a common thing used by nearly everyone in the detailing community. A lot less aggressive than solvents, too. You want a 50-50 mix of water to alcohol if possible, so you'll have to do some math if you're using typical 70% alcohol you find at the pharmacy. I usually go for the highest concentration I can get, typically in the 90% range, which makes it a little easier to do the math. -D > On Aug 11, 2017, at 12:39 PM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes >wrote: > > Thank you.
