In this instance, the 'solitary' description relates to the fact that one wasp

The 'swarm' by the hundreds in one small area.  Just each one has his own home.

The swarming is so intense at Fairystone State Park that they put up signs
telling visitors not to be concerned by them, they are basically harmless to
humans.  The garden looks like lumpy swiss cheese.

The wasps were rewarded by a heavy dousing of RAID into their nest

How about yellow jackets nesting in the attic insulation, chewing the drywall
above your bed, dropping on you in your sleep and stinging you?
Fortunately they're aggressive enough that the first one in my bed stung me so I
didn't have to contend with 50 of them.

Another time I got nailed when they nested in a big round hay bale, I managed to
clear out before getting stung a second time.

The first time I had a big reaction to a yellow jacket sting I was riding my
bike flat out, about 25mph, and one got in my jersey. Nailed me 3 times in the
chest before I got my bike stopped and pulled my jersey off.

Yellow jackets are kill on sight targets.
Wasps and hornets I kill only if they nest in car doors or mirrors.

Hey, Mr. Organic Gardener - you should be telling us about the wasps,
I would think. Maybe the garden didn't have cat poop in proper
quantity. Someone told us that the ground hole maker buzzers
(wasps/hornets) eat other insects so they are good to have around but
they make a mess of the yard.

The other day walking through the forest preserve I heard a large
sound of buzzers - bees or wasps, who knows. Very loud. Yesterday on
the same walk - no noise. I wondered if this was like bees doing
their swarm thing, finding new queen and residence, or if it was the
proper humidity and heat to have large numbers of buzzers out doing
their thing.

As Andrew asks, do we have any entomologist that cares to suggest the
noticeable buzz noise the other day while hot and humid?

Fortunately those aren't very aggressive. Not like yellowjackets
at a picnic, or hornets of any kind. I get 'em in the morning,
around dawn while it's still cool and they're all hanging out on
the nest. One quick spray and it's over. Best if you survey for
them periodically so they don't get highly established.

recluse spiders.

My reaction to their sting is not pleasant, but I don't have
life-risking reactions to them.

Non-flammable brake cleaner is very effective at killing them. A
good hit will bring one down in flight. Seems to me to be much
more effective than other things I've tried. I don't use it on the
nests though.

Right about sunset they will all return to their nests and will be
dormant. I use WD-40 to kill them all and leave their nest coated
in oily stuff. I have seen nests re-occupied after using brake
cleaner. None of the originals survived, so I'm guessing the brake
cleaner evaporates clean enough that other wasps decided the nest
is perfectly good and move in. WD-40 is almost as effective as
brake cleaner for killing the wasps and seems to prevent
re-habitation.

To prevent them building, try cypermethrin. I got some for this
season and it seems to work - though for whatever reason the wasp
population is _way_ down compared to previous years so my test is
not conclusive.

summer and fall since I moved out to the country about 25 miles from
Portland (Oregon). These are not the kind that build a closed
football-shaped nest (though I've seen those here a couple of times
too), but the kind that build something that looks like a honeycomb
with open cells where the larvae grow. As Allen described, they love
 doorjambs in particular.

What a horror story. Where do you reside?

Paper. There was a mud nest in the air filter, which I checked because
I wanted to be sure there wasn't a mouse nest in there or something.

[MBZ] wasps everywhere

2013-07-28 Thread Allan Streib
I have not driven the 300D much this summer. In fact I have not driven
it at all for over a month. I need it while another car goes into the
shop, so I went out this afternoon to wash it and check it over... the
thing is infested with wasps in every crevice! In the door hinge
recesses, under the fuel filler cover, under the hood I've used
quite a bit of Raid and think I got them all.

Mud daubers are mostly just a nuisance and rarely attack.

To keep them away, use cypermethrin. They won't land on a sprayed
surface - at least for a while.
