Thanks for the feedback, everyone - I'll be seeing about cleaning it up this
weekend.

Mostly just relieved it should be fixable with a little poking around, at
this point.

I like the one (pressure bleeder) that's advertised in the STAR for about
$40. It's a miniature garden sprayer with a pressure gauge and a screw-cap
on the end of the hose. The screw cap goes on the top of the brake
reservoir. The only thing I don't like about the design is that the cap is
hard mounted to the hose so you need to unwind the kinks in the hose as
you screw the cap on the reservoir. The other gotcha is the little rubber
buttons on top of the reservoir. If those buttons are hard or cracked,
they'll let the pressure out ... and a bunch of brake fluid as well.
Recommend replacement if in doubt before pressure bleeding.

I built one based on this version. I highly recommend adding the
pressure gauge, and using a sprayer body with a built in pressure
relief valve. It's nice to know how much pressure you're running and
have the ability to release that internal pressure when you've
finished.

It's got rubber flapper valves in it. Easy solution is that there is
foreign matter in a valve. Harder solution requires a repair kit for
$10 or so. Either way, you've got to disassemble the thing.

Thanks,

I need to check around to see what is available locally before I order online.
I had thought that it might be a specialized MB tool so I wanted to make sure
that I ordered the right unit.

One of the dual converter pumps that reads both pressure and vacuum is
MOST desirable, but you will seldom need pressure (but when you do it's
wonderful to have that feature). Probably costs a $10-20 premium.

Pep Boys sells them, so did Auto Zone, and MAYBE Harbor Freight.

What you are looking for, and what another MBZ-related list did a group
purchase on, is a device called a 'Suck-Up'. It holds over 2 gallons and
has an elegant pour spout to discard the oil at your local mcparts. Google
Suck-up, bilge to get some suppliers. Everyone on the other list has
loved theirs. If you try to make one out of a carboy, you will find that
they are designed to be strong with force pushing out, but are rather
lacking under vacuum. It could be messy. Funny, but messy.

Think I found it:

I suppose I could just use my vacuum pump hooked to a
carboy for a trap, but I'd prefer something tidy that
does not require a power source so I can do the job on
the street and haul straight to service station for
disposal.

Need a source and specific model number for a
high-capacity Mity Vac, preferably one with a hand
pump. Need the 8+qt capacity for OM 617 oil change.

Can't find it in the (new) archive.

Thanks,
Karl

Hmm.. I know there a bit of overlap between lists, but I wonder if it
would be possible to get a multi-list group buy together for
something...

First time I've seen that one. I have the MityVac Silverline for use in
checking vacuum lines. It's been a solid performer, so I suspect the rest
of their stuff is good also.
