(well, it was new in 1980) I've still got 27s on my 1974 Maino. When I bought it in 1982, I took off the huge Weinmann centerpulls and put 57mm Shimano 600 brakes on it. Had to extend the rear brake slots a little to get the shoes to line up with the rim as it is, no way I could make normal brakes work with 700 rims on that bike. The last of my old 27 x 1 1/8 tires finally cracked and I had to buy new tires for the first time since the 1990s this year. Maybe. IMO, new technology added more threads to the tire making 700x28s are as comfortable as the old 1-1/4 tire. Also, the tire rubber is thinner and stronger than older tech. Really? The tires I bought in the 1980s and 1990s were 66 tpi (Specialized Touring II) and up. Seems like the affordable tires today have heavier casing thread. The Vittoria Zaffiros I got from Nashbar a couple of months ago have thicker rubber in the center than any road tire I used to buy, and I got the idea the casing was coarser than 66tpi. Are you saying that something like a Continental GP is thinner than a GP from 20 years ago? Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) Re: OT for bike geeks: Cannondale H200
Maybe the only old tires I've dealt with were cheap and didn't use a high TPI or good quality rubber. Most of the tires I'm running now are 120TPI which ends up being very comfortable. This is probably why I thought older tires didn't use the higher TPI of current tech. Or a gel/memory foam seat cover instead of padded shorts. Not everyone likes walking around feeling like they have a full diaper between their legs I _never_ will understand the bike subculture. yes, they are. i remember at the time making fun of some kid for getting a japan made fender strat but it turns out be a really good guitar. ibanez had some really nice guitars too. i even like the teiscos of a decade earlier, or at least some of them of more recent vintage, i've had good luck with korean guitars, particularly a couple of epiphones and a samick bass. sadly, i play guitar as well as a i ride a bicycle, but that doesn't mean i don't appreciate good value in both!
