Altimax HP?
Blow them up to 51psi if the ride is too soft.
Altimax RT are usually rated for 44psi.

They've got nifty alignment indicators at the edges of the tread.
Take a look at them every time you fill up with gas and see if all the little
marks wear off at the same time. I just remembered to check mine at 2200 miles,
the shallow alignment marks are all gone and the deep ones are all still there,
so I missed the first indication.

I've got the HPs. Stick much better than the crap that was on the car, but
rolling resistance went up with the new tires. I don't know if it's from the new
tires not being worn thin like the old ones or if the inner cushion rubber
raises rolling resistance. As long as I keep pressure over 40psi the car rolls
OK, but rides a bit harsh. There was a $50 Visa gift card rebate this summer, so
after rebate I paid about $45 each plus shipping. Can't beat that for H-rated
15 tires.
Some of the reviews I read seemed to think the RTs got a little hard and lost
grip in really cold weather, so I paid an extra $4 per tire (and gave up some
treadwear rating) for the HPs. I have not made the tires howl or complain since
I got the HPs, and I've done some pretty hard cornering.

I don't have the tools to do it myself, nor do I particularly want to...
Although it would be nice to have balanced tires at the moment. These
tires start acting funny somewhere above 45mph. At higher speeds (80+
mph) they smooth out, but they certainly aren't as smooth as the old
ones. Those were smooth all the way up to the speed limiter... and I'm
going to pester the tire place till these new tires are. Or get new ones

1997 Olds underAchieva, 2.4L twincam. I put a muffler and the tires on within a
week of each other, seemed to drop a mpg or two. I did a roll test from the top
of the freeway ramp about 3/4 mile from town, at 32psi I dropped from 50 mph at
the top to 37 mph at the city limits with the old tires, with the Altimax I was
doing 33-34. With the Altimax at 42, it's still rolling 37-38 at the city limits.

Never again got quite the same mpg as the first couple of weeks I owned the car,
I think replacing the muffler with the fist sized hole in it cost me mileage.
Should have saved my money and had a straight pipe made for it instead of buying
a custom fit Walker muffler. (factory muffler was $400, Walker was $80, straight
pipe would have been $20)

I live in DC and a local shop here (Radial Tire) suggested Toyo tires for my
'85
300TD. I wanted an H-rated tire (more sidewall plies) and they set me up with
the best tires I have had on the car - great wet/dry traction, decent in snow,
not too much road noise, and a great price. I have put about 15K mi on them and
they are wearing fine despite my aggressive cornering habits. If you have a
Toyo
dealer nearby I would highly recommend you check them out; I can get the model
number of my tires if you would like.

Re: [MBZ] 190D tires

2005-09-16 Thread Harry  M.
The chances are using a cheap tire may just be defeating the whole purpose.
Might have to resort to finding a decent HR or maybe VR rated tire.

Tom Hargrave [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

My overall experience with tires on my Mercedes 300SDL is that anything
short of H rated Michelins wear like crap. This includes the Continental
Touring Sport Contacts. I'm an aggressive driver and I scrub the tread off
the inside outside edges of my tires. Others, including my oldest Son, can
get great mileage out of just about anything.

My Porsche is another story. I can run several brands with no apparent
problem, probably because it’s a much lighter car.
Same with my Infinity J30. I'm running cheap S rated tires on it and they
are wearing as well as the the ones on the Porsche.

It all depends on the car and your driving style. I've owned 15 Mercedes to
date and they've all chewed up tires.

Alex, I've had good luck with the ones on my Benz but I have heard a few
comments regarding how they wear. Guess it just depends on the vehicle and
how a person drives. I'm a bit of a agressive driver, but again sometimes
you have to factor in the vehicle and suspension which makes a difference on
how the tire wears. Mercedes uses Continental tires on alot of their cars so
I'm surprized their after market tires don't wear as well

Ron,

I put a pair of KH16's on our Passat and they've been fine. MIght be a bit
more crisp on turn-in than the Kumho HP4 Ecstas they've replaced.

The KH16s have about 6k on them. Do well in rain, but can't report on snow

The Dunlop SP60 is a good choice as well as the Continental Conti-Sport

Ron,

I put a pair of KH16's on our Passat and they've been fine. MIght be a bit
more crisp on turn-in than the Kumho HP4 Ecstas they've replaced.

The KH16s have about 6k on them. Do well in rain, but can't report on snow
yet. The HP4's were decent for an all-season tire.

Not sure if they're the same model you're referring to, Harry, but I
have Continential Touring Sport Contacts on my 124 and while they
corner nicely and are quiet on the freeway, they wear like crap.
They've got less than 10,000 miles on them and the tread looks half
gone, which I find unacceptable, even considering that I do, as BMW
owner's manuals used to put it, drive in a spirited manner.

Alex, I've had good luck with the ones on my Benz but I have heard a few
comments regarding how they wear. Guess it just depends on the vehicle and how
a person drives. I'm a bit of a agressive driver, but again sometimes you have
to factor in the vehicle and suspension which makes a difference on how the
tire wears. Mercedes uses Continental tires on alot of their cars so I'm
surprized their after market tires don't wear as well

Re: [MBZ] 190D tires

2005-09-15 Thread Tom Hargrave

A already run at max tire pressure. The issue is twofold.

Mercedes are very heavy cars and if you look at the steering geometry,
you'll note that the front tires lean over when you turn.

Is that scrubbing the tread off or driving them slightly underinflated
(I've had to go above the recommended pressures on our 240D/3.0)?

snow.
