Angie's '05 VW Golf had that happen on both front springs. On that car the springs are part of the struts which makes compressing the spring even a bit more exciting. The Tommymobile, the 1998 S420 I bought from Tommy in St. Louis, had a broken "tail" on the right front spring. It was the last 2" or so at the bottom where it broke. That was weird, I can only imagine the paint got scratched or something and it corroded and weakened the steel?
