Bob,
I might have the brackets for the trunk... I'll let you know. You'll also
need the GPS splitter, I can find the part number. If you want a trunk
liner that looks nice, you'll have to order one of them too. A parts guy
that knows his stuff and his was around the EPC will be your friend here.
Originally, if Nav was added to a car, they ordered a kit which contained
everything that was needed, including the correct liner.

Regarding the wiring, there are three connections to the Nav box. A power
cable, MOST (orange fiber optics), and GPS antenna. All three of these are
already in the car. The GPS cable just runs to where a splitter can be
connected. Its also on the driver's side of the trunk, in a little deeper.
Actually, on second thought, you can just connect the GPS antenna
directly, but you'll have to disconnect it from the Teleaid module. This
means your emergency call system won't know where you are. If you want
this system to work, this is a consideration.

All communication goes through MOST to the head unit. You have to tie the
MOST cables for the Nav box into the MOST ring. The junction for these
cables is under the back seat, drivers side. Its a fairly easy task if you
do it after everything else is connected. You can just figure out which
lines come from the Nav box, and which are in the ring. You open one of
the couplers with the system running and you'll see a red light. Connect
that one to one of the cables from the Nav box. If you get light coming
out of the other Nav box cable, you got the right one... now complete the
ring by connecting the two open cables together. If not, try the other
combination.

MOST devices are in a ring. Each device has two cables, one in and one
out. Only thing you can mess up is mixing up in and out. If the light
isn't able to travel around the ring completely, nothing works: You just
see a MB star on the head unit, then it shuts down.

So, reasons to use the factory system:
  - Good integration with instrument cluster, must less distraction, route
 info available at a glance
  - Audio integration: Entertainment audio will not conflict with
Navigation, they bled automatically. You can always hear the Navi.
  - Positioning. The factory relies more on a gyroscope and wheel speed
sensors for positioning than GPS. This means you still know where you are
in tunnels, big cities, and anywhere else the view to the sky is
 obstructed.
  - Current maps are still available. Make sure you get a recent one if you
buy a box with the DVD.

You can get the Navi box on ebay, as you said, but you also need the
factory mounting bracket. Proper mounting is critical to the function of
the positioning, so rigging something up isn't recommended.

You can is prewired for this. You'll find what you need tucked behind the
driver's side trunk liner. You'll also need a GPS splitter. I can find
part numbers for all this stuff if you want to continue.

I know this system quite intimately: I'm one of the engineers that helped
to bring it to the market.

 Good luck!

 Hi,

It's me again with the new toy. My 2004 E320 does not have a
Navigation System so I am considering installing one. I did research and
some people say it's as simple as buying a DVD reader and mounting it in he
trunk because all the cars are NAV ready. Any opinions on this endeavor.
Is the system worth the work? I currently use a Garmin in my other cars
but since it appears to be an easy project this would eliminate the
constant removing the Garmin to avoid theft in addition to being
 aesthetically pleasing.

I see a range of prices for the reader on EBAY from $200 to $1800. I
don't see any brackets or wiring so any diagrams, part numbers etc. needed
 would be appreciated.

 As always thanks in advance.

 Bob

IIRC, you can push a button on the dash unit and the screen swings down,
exposing the CD reader for the nav unit (or was that a cassette deck behind
the screen?)

Kaleb,
Thats an Alpine system... I think there might be a Navi module you can put
into it from the back. I'm not very familiar with them. Check eBay.

Re: [MBZ] 2004 E320 4matic Navigation System

2013-03-02 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
Bob,
I might have the brackets for the trunk...

Oops... I pressed send too fast.

 Good luck!
 Jaime
