After a few minutes of panic I turned the car back on, and the oil light wasn't on and the pressure behaved as it should. It didn't come on the whole way home (~3 miles). What the hell happened? Kaleb says it's just the car's way of telling me to check the oil. About 99% of the time when the oil level light reports low oil, the oil level is FINE. There at least two DIFFERENT flaws. Check the archives for reports on them. Remember, the oil level light is USELESS to report a sudden loss of oil because of the 60 second delay before the light illuminates (in 60 seconds, you can loose more than one bearing)! You must depend on the oil pressure gauge for that. The oil level light's purpose is ONLY to warn you that the oil level is approaching the ADD mark and the next time you stop the car, you should consider adding a qt of oil Marshall -- Marshall Booth (who doesn't respond to unsigned questions) der Dieseling Doktor [EMAIL PROTECTED] '87 300TD 182Kmi, '85 190D 2.0 161Kmi, '87 190D 2.5 turbo 237kmi, '84 190D 2.2 229Kmi (retired)

yes, check the oil and see if there is some obstruction in the filter. The e300d does the oil lamp dance after a change and I chase it for a bit, then the light decides to not do that anymore. All the while the oil is new, level mid stick or less cold, no visible leaks, no loss in 1k miles. Sometimes I reseat the filter cap for good measure. Re: [MBZ] 300D oddness
The oil level circuit board in the instrument panel may beginning to go haywire. I fixed this problem by swapping in a later model fuel/oil/coolant gauge cluster, which contains that circuit. I think this is a fairly common failure mode. Mine presently comes on just when the oil level reaches the lowest mark on the dipstick, but it used to do it whenever I made a sharp lefthand turn.
