I only drive through Peoria on occasion, except in 95 I did some research there. I think I was in Peoria for 3 days and it was so cold. I think i wore coveralls in the escort to keep warm, and it normally was comfortable in winter. I know one day it warmed up to 0 and the sun was out, so I went to a parts store and rigged up a manual pushbutton relay for the glow plugs. I think that trip was the only time I had trouble starting the escort. Beres at Pekin was the closest dealer to where I grew up. Got my first (and only) factory crate shortblocks (OM621) there. I think Beres was the oldest dealer in the country at that time. Bickelhaupt Motors in Clinton, IA was another oldie. They were originally Studie and IH trucks, then when Studie started to distribute MB, they got in the MB business. They had an old building they stored NOS parts in. The owner let me go through there in the early 80s and pick out stuff for 110/111 cars. In My ere they were MB and IH trucks. An interesting combination. Burly truck drivers and girlie man lawyers in the same shop. Yeah, I was a real oddity at Beres when i brought back the first short block and had to prove to them a headbolt hole was completely missing. I was 19 then. They kept telling me on the phone this is impossible Sound like an old german? I still have the engine crate in my living room. I varnished it and put hinges on the lid. Love that big black star on the crate! Interestingly enough, the head salesman at the dealer in Pekin now is an IH collector. He is a client of my brother's and that is how I met him.
