Nope.  In their world all those things, including the costs of customer
dissatisfaction, and even lost customers, come out of a "different
budget".  Visionaries should be in charge of companies, not accountants.
(Steve Jobs, not Ebenezer Scrooge.)  The bean-counter mindset is a

Whoa! If the decision is made by a bean counter, Curt gets screwed.
You've gotta know who ultimately decides the value of the position.
While we all know and believe Curt is high value to them, or should be,
none of us know who ultimately judges the value of the position to the
company. Maybe Curt does. Even if his boss is 100% good with any
price because he understands the investment they have in Curt, and the
value he provides to the company, some schmuck bean counter, maybe even
a consultant, not even an employee, might be the one who says "cut the
cord" "We can hire some 20 yr old kid to do this."

Bean counters don't value institutional knowledge, relationships,
training costs, etc.. They ask themselves if they can fill the position
for less money. They cause immense damage to companies.

Re: [MBZ] BAT 300CD

2017-11-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I will say this - it’s fun for the first year or two, at least it was for me.
Starting in year 3 or 4 it started being a PITA, because there would be stuff I
would miss with the kids or things I wanted to to do that I just couldn’t
because I wasn’t around.

In my case I was lucky in the sense that I could schedule a lot of my travel
myself, so it made it a little easier as I could try and spread things out.
However, I still had “black bag jobs” that came up with no warning that I
didn’t have a right of refusal on. When I got the call from our Travel
Department that a limo was picking me up in two hours to take me to O’Hare for
a flight to G-d knows where everything came to a screeching halt and I had to
pack.

That part sucked, and the contract work we did overseas for the government
sucked, too. Those were jobs where we would have to go and be there for 3-4
weeks at a time to support government contracts. Those of you who have worked
overseas, (Grant) especially in second and third world countries know what I’m
talking about. A four day work week if you’re lucky, with a work ethic that
would get done in several days something that you could accomplish here in an
hour or two. And no use trying to push the locals, as they wouldn’t have any
of it. Adapt to their pace or die. Grr.

Re: [MBZ] BAT 300CD

2017-11-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Heh. On average I was on the road 35 weeks a year when I was doing the
generator thing in Wisconsin. Factor in two small kids and i’s even worse. I
just came home one day and said, “No more.” About a third of that time was
overseas, which meant it was a straight 2-3 week trip. I had a really good
boss for most of it and when I was at home/in the office I could pretty much
come and go as I pleased, as he realized the screw you get for being on the
road all the time - he had done it in the past as well.

In my case I didn’t care about the money, as it was already pretty good. I
just wanted to stay home. I couldn’t put a value on that.

20 years later and I am just starting to be comfortable taking 3-4 day trips to
relatives. That’s about my limit. Otherwise, I want to be home.

I am once again in LA, thus far this year I've been in this hotel 44 nights...
By the end of the year I estimate I'll have been on the road for the company
more than 60 nights. Angie is less pleased than she's ever been.
I looked at my Q1 schedule today and sent my boss an email that said "no". He
scheduled me for 9 weeks of class in a row including one where I'd put in for 2
days of comp time. We're due for the "I want more money" talk which is rapidly
becoming "You might not be able to afford me."

Re: [MBZ] BAT 300CD

2017-11-27 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Since Kleb hasn't sprung any dinero on this 78 CD I have, I'm gonna have
to go through it and put it on BAT.  This thing is up to $8k, looks
nice, the one I have is pretty nice too but I need to check out a few
things.

How high can it go?
And aren't the coupes designated C123 instead of W123?

Seems like the only car I've seen on BAT that wasn't given a W chassis number
was the W123 that was poorly stretched. They called that one a V123 although it
plainly was not.

That was the cause of a lot of argument in the comments section on the fake
V123 a while back.
Today's listing has a "3 speed" too, without any limousine pretensions to
explain a possible conversion to a 450 SE transmission:

Chassis: WDBAB53A6FA254457
110K Miles
3.0L Inline-Five Turbo Diesel
3-Speed Automatic Transmission
Kenwood CD Stereo
Pyle Speakers
Nardi Steering Wheel
