That is the way it is supposed to work. Unless the seller actively concealed
something (and your story is close), then it is part of the purchase of a used

Geez. I had a better trip from Port Charlotte to Charlotte Michigan in the $550
W116. Spent the night in northern Georgia, found a low tire the next morning,
blew it up before I left the motel, then when I got out of Chattanooga traffic
I noticed a vibration in the rear. Turned out to be a dead shock absorber,
which the seller masked by running 20psi in the right rear. That was my only
mishap though (unless almost looping it in the rain when it downshifted into
first in a low speed corner counts as a mishap). And IIRC he told me it needed
shocks before I left Michigan.

When I drove the S210 home from MA, it lost a lot of air in the left front

I suspect the blower isn't used to running for such extended periods and

Some people should _not_ buy a used car. I don't think the woman I sold it
to was able to deal with its inevitable age-related issues. I know she
never titled it in her name, because the popo's came after me for parking
tickets. Idiots in State. Why was _I_ responsible for contacting
Department A and forwarding the paperwork to Department B?

Anyway, I saw it a year or so ago in front of a garage, and the paint was
really looking bad. (It looked fairly good when it left me.) Next time I
saw it, it was at my guy's place, looking even worse. It was hard to tell
whether it had been mine or not, they all do look alike, but the brand-new
upholstery decided it for me. That, and the fact that the trunk paint was
still good. (I had had that repainted.)

That was a fun, _fun_ little car. Too bad it got ruined.

The odometer died about 24 miles from Snooks house when I bought the 300D
2.5T from him in Wichita - told him when he reached out and asked how the
trip home was - but never thought about seeking redress - it was an old
used car . . .

Re: [MBZ] BAT Away!

2017-05-23 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Thanks, everyone. Your comments make me feel better. I understand clearly that
a used car is a used car, and that stuff can break 10 miles or 100 miles from
where you got the car - or never for that matter.

I pride myself in being as open and honest about any car I sell and even if
stuff breaks, I still feel bad about it. That doesn't mean I feel obligated to
fix or make it right. The buyer has to do their due diligence whether they
rely on their personal experience or get a PPI done. I just don't want to have
to deal with the hassle of an angry buyer.

I've really been lucky in that I've never had a car I've bought crap out on me
on my way home (yet.) Maybe I'm just living right or I'm cautious enough to
know when to forego the drive and pay to have it shipped. I know that fear
when you're driving a new to you car and something acts up or you hear a weird
noise - freaks you out and puts you on edge for a good 10-20 miles.

I'm going to ignore the request for a phone call and see if he tries to reach
out to me tomorrow. If he does I'll see if he reveals what his motivation is.
I'll certainly help him get the bad shock replaced if he's civil. If not, the
door closes and he gets blocked.

Re: [MBZ] BAT Away!

2017-05-23 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Geez. I had a better trip from Port Charlotte to Charlotte Michigan in
the $550 W116. Spent the night in northern Georgia, found a low tire the next
morning, blew it up before I left the motel, then when I got out of Chattanooga
traffic I noticed a vibration in the rear. Turned out to be a dead shock
absorber, which the seller masked by running 20psi in the right rear. That was
my only mishap though (unless almost looping it in the rain when it downshifted
into first in a low speed corner counts as a mishap). And IIRC he told me it
needed shocks before I left Michigan.

When I drove the S210 home from MA, it lost a lot of air in the left front
overnight in Ohio. That leak turned out to be a cracked rim. And no, I never
told the seller about it, even though he'd almost surely been airing it up
daily and failed to mention it to me. I just bought another rim on eBay for $55
and went on with my life.
Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] BAT Away!

2017-05-23 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
How did he know the shock was leaking? I only noticed the shock on my 240D was
leaking when I checked the diff oil on routine service.

Also, I understand the legal significance of "as is", but what is the legal
significance of "where is"?
Thanks,
Gerry

When I sold my daily drive 123 wagon, the speedometer died for the new owner
within a couple miles of leaving my house, and then something else I don't
remember died later in that trip. I felt bad, would have fixed those in
advance if I'd known, but that is how it goes sometimes. I think the kid also
ran over a tire at highway speed and knocked the muffler off.

To be honest I couldn't figure this guy out. He's a middle aged
business owner who is originally from Lebanon (the country) that buys
and sells all sorts of cars. He didn't appear to be a flipper. He is
buying a Porsche 911 later this week in MI and just sold a VW Thing on
BAT. He spent last weekend at a big Subaru meet at the place in PA
(Hershey?) where they have the big car meets all summer with an older
Subaru that's apparently somewhat rare and worth some dough. He was
complaining about BAT because he wants to sell the Subaru and they
don't agree with the reserve he wants. He's had Hummers, Land Rovers
and Acuras, to name a few, according to what he told me.

He's all over the place as far as cars from the way he talked. Not
sure what's going on there. All cash, I know that, as he sort of
railed about having to report cash transactions with his bank.

Strange. Just glad it's over and I can start searching in earnest for
a finnie.

Re: [MBZ] BAT Away!

2017-05-23 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So what is the guys story as to why he bid so much for this car given that he
is not a mb guy and seems to know noting about them? I guess maybe that
explains why these go for so much on BAT, it's people who think just because it
has a star it's worth a ton of money. I get people talk about how rich I must
be driving my 25 year old $2k cars when they are driving a $50k pickup truck.

Re: [MBZ] BAT Away!

2017-05-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have a lifetime guarantee on the shock from FCP Euro for which I will help
him get it replaced, that’s not a problem. It’s just weird that the shock
suddenly failed. I’ve never had a Bilstein fail on me before. I looked on the
garage floor and there’s nothing where the left rear wheel was to suggest it
was leaking previously. Strange.

As for the cruise control, my response is, “It’s a 35 year old car and stuff is
going to break.”

This guy is not a Mercedes person and clearly did not know the car based on his
comments and questions. I provided him with all the documentation and answered
all of his questions as honestly as possible, that’s about all I can do. It
was his option to get a PPI, he elected not to - not that it would have
revealed anything that wasn’t already known.

I got cash and the bill of sale stating the car was sold as-is, where-is. He’s
either driving or transporting it to Grand Rapids - it is no longer my car nor
do I bear any responsibility for it.

Grr.

It's a very old car. Things fail, it's normal and to be expected. It's not a
ground up nut and bolt resto where everything is new. He needs to suck it up or
buy a new Camry or other such despicable appliance.
