The ATE situation is no longer all that dire.
I can get the amber 5.1 from Advance Auto for about a buck more than I used to
pay Rusty (after 25% coupon):
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/ate-type-200-amber-brake-fluid-1-liter-3c10035662ate/11076067-p

And there's a new ATE fluid, it's special low viscosity stuff for faster on/off
cycling in computer managed braking systems like ABS/BAS/4Matic. This will
probably be my new Mercedes fluid of choice, at least in cars made in the last
30 years.

Prestone, Valvoline and Castrol all sell DOT 4 and should be available at
virtually every FLAPS.
I can get Prestone and Valvoline at the supermarket too.
Unfortunately the Valvoline changed from Syntec to Synthetic DOT 3 & 4 several
years ago and the boiling point went down from nearly 5.1 standards to barely
meeting DOT 4.
And the feds cracked down on imports of non-DOT certifiable ATE Superblue,
because of the 'brake fluid is clear or amber' rule, and the price of ATE Gold
is way higher than I used to pay Gary and Rusty 15 years ago...

Also. since MB specified DOT4 - - - why even consider anything else?
I'd look at all the hoses - if they all look the same age, I'd replace them
all, then just flush the brake fluid once. The brake system is too critical
to risk old hoses.

I would suspect the hose long before blaming the caliper.

Has the system ever had DOT3 fluid in it? That seems to cause
hose swelling.

Subject: [MBZ] Break caliber ceased

I was driving the 560SEC this afternoon and it was doing the front end shaking
thing again (it has been intermittent) and when I stopped at s light after
driving about 15miles at 45-50 the RF wheel seemed like it was smoking. I
pulled into a gas station there (was gonna get gas anyway) and it was VERY hot
so I figured the brake caliper (break caliber) was stuck. As I was leaving the
pedal was really mushy, I figured the fluid (break flood) was boiling or
something. I stopped at a NAPA down the road to see if by chance they might
have a caliper in stock. Nope. By then the brake pedal (break petal) was ok and
it seemed to have unstuck some. I came home with no further incident.

I gotta go look in the barn and see if one of the calipers off the 420SEL I
knackered is any good. I could swap that on and see if things are happier. If
not I’ll order a reman, NAPA wanted $77 for one, I think I got a 20% coupon
from Advance Auto so that would be helpful.

These old cars! I did see a silver 300CD just ahead of me when I stopped at
the light so that was fun. There’s a cars & coffee tomorrow if I had this 78 CD
fixed up with the new brakes I could take that over.
