speaking of Africa - I always thought it odd that the African continent
has natural resources that rival N America yet they squander any
opportunity by killing each other in border disputes, civil war,
religious disputes, etc. I can't understand why anyone would be proud
to call themselves African-American given the supposed culture of
Africa. As far as I can tell the fighting and killing has been going on
for ever - occasionally exacerbated by Europeans, Americans, Cubans, etc
- Slavery was a terrible thing when in place in the US but those who
survived seem to be in a better place here than if they had remained in
Africa.

Not all civil engineering is public works. My Dad is a civil engineer and has
never gone long without a job, I think part of the trick is that he's also PLS
(professional land surveyor). Its still not a real growth industry though.

Right now Dad is a landfill manager which he says is the best job he's ever
had. Theres lots of engineering that goes on on the landfill that they used to
farm out to different companies. Even including my Dad's salary he figures the
landfill saved around half a million bucks by having him on staff instead of
farming that work out. Apparently most landfill managers are just high school
graduates.

North Dakota maybe. Not much spare change for civil engineering projects in
the Northwest. Washington will process the dang things to death, deplete any
funding for actually building it, and then say they never really wanted it
anyway.

Western Montana was rebuilding the bridges on I-90 from Idaho to Missoula last
year.

Absolutely. He has been applying for positions all over the US, from what his
dad tells me. One of the issues I have seen is with employers not considering
or giving less consideration to applicants from outside their geographic area,
since the job pool is so deep these days. I know he's not expecting relocation
expenses - he's a kid fresh out of college looking to start his career. He's
got some serious student loans, so he's expecting to be poor for some time

The family has a lot of relatives in the NYC/Northern NJ area, so he's looking
at using one of the relative's addresses for applying in that area.

Civil engineering seems to be a dying field at present. My girlfriend was laid
off from a major civil engineering firm a while back. They had been making cuts
since 2008 and staffing cuts continue to this day. He may have to start
looking overseas. I see no signs that US infrastructure is going to be
improved, let alone maintained, at the Federal, state, or municipal levels for
years to come. They are broke. Unless he finds an employer with a Pork Barrel
project (bridge to nowhere, high speed train to nowhere) his chances of a

Probably a poor career choice, but not as bad as an education degree with no

Wouldn't it have made more sense to get a job before the grad degree? With
no job experience he is competing against those that may have decades of
experience. Its often easier to get a job if you already live where you
expect to work or would like to get a job, unless the prospective employer
knows there are no local candidates or you know something that nobody else
does. He really has no leverage. I would not hire anyone that uses a
false address. If he's going to Uncle Bob's address he better be living
with Uncle Bob.

The schools are run by accountants, I guess. Higher education is big
business. It is the only segment of consumer lending that seems to be
growing. There is over a trillion dollars in student loans outstanding.

I have advised my youngest son to get an engineering degree, get a job,
and then pursue a MBA or a JD (patent attorney).

Dan,
Have him check out The Shaw Group..
A quick check on their web site shows some Civil Engineer jobs. There's
even one in Boca Raton, Fla.

If by some long shot of a chance anyone knows of or might have any leads for
someone in this discipline, drop me a note off list, please.

Thanks,

What firm did your girlfriend work at?
Chicago news yesterday said Clayco (claycorp.com) is moving from St.

civil infrastructure firms/employees. I guess they are a national

FWIW, I have an online friend of several years in India. He advises me
there is a shortage of engineers in India and they are now hiring.

Such a posting would be, perhaps, a major magnitude move for a young man,
however, a job is a job in today s market.

Perhaps worthy of a look on his part.

I wish him all the best,

North Dakota maybe. Not much spare change for civil engineering projects in
the Northwest. Washington will process the dang things to death, deplete any
funding for actually building it, and then say they never really wanted it
anyway.

Western Montana was rebuilding the bridges on I-90 from Idaho to Missoula last
year.

They need all the civil engineers they can get to pull India out of the third
world and into the first and a half.

Take the job there, get some projects under his belt and move to Africa to
spiff that place up. By then he will be senior engineer stock and can return
to Amerika to rebuild what the idiots we have taking up space and breathable
air in D.C. have allowed to go to pot
