speaking of Africa - I always thought it odd that the African continent has natural resources that rival N America yet they squander any opportunity by killing each other in border disputes, civil war, religious disputes, etc. I can't understand why anyone would be proud to call themselves African-American given the supposed culture of Africa. As far as I can tell the fighting and killing has been going on for ever - occasionally exacerbated by Europeans, Americans, Cubans, etc - Slavery was a terrible thing when in place in the US but those who survived seem to be in a better place here than if they had remained in Africa. Re: [MBZ] Civil Engineer Looking for Work - OT
Not all civil engineering is public works. My Dad is a civil engineer and has never gone long without a job, I think part of the trick is that he's also PLS (professional land surveyor). Its still not a real growth industry though. Right now Dad is a landfill manager which he says is the best job he's ever had. Theres lots of engineering that goes on on the landfill that they used to farm out to different companies. Even including my Dad's salary he figures the landfill saved around half a million bucks by having him on staff instead of farming that work out. Apparently most landfill managers are just high school graduates. -Curt Date: Sat, 5 Jan 2013 20:35:40 -0800 From: clay monroe redgh...@comcast.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Civil Engineer Looking for Work - OT Message-ID: ae65324d-120f-43b5-a7ab-c3d31e401...@comcast.net Content-Type: text/plain;charset=us-ascii North Dakota maybe. Take a job in India, gain experience and stay the hell out of Africa.. no matter what. Been there on several projects myself. DO NOT recommend anyone go there. Rich in resources.. and absolutely the most stupid people and governments on the face of the earth.. not to mention the raw exposure to disease, war, murder, and parasites. My last contract was in Nigeria, then Benin. The price for a hired murder there was $20, with a machete. If you wanted it done with a gun, the price was $50, cash up front, of course. Slaves were openly for sale. I ask my native associate what do you do with them? He replied, Anything you want, you own them. Medical care was not present, by any western standard. Wouldn't it have made more sense to get a job before the grad degree? With no job experience he is competing against those that may have decades of experience. Its often easier to get a job if you already live where you expect to work or would like to get a job, unless the prospective employer knows there are no local candidates or you know something that nobody else does. He really has no leverage. I would not hire anyone that uses a false address. If he's going to Uncle Bob's address he better be living with Uncle Bob. I have a good friend whose son has his B.A. in civil engineering from the University of South Florida and a Masters in the same from Embry-Riddle. Both degrees had a focus in transportation. He also holds a Florida EIT license (engineering intern). I take it, then, that he's looking for a job in road construction and/or maintanance. He's been looking for work for nearly a year now (graduated in 2012 from grad school) without any luck. I know what that's like, having been looking in earnest since April 2012. If by some long shot of a chance anyone knows of or might have any leads for someone in this discipline, drop me a note off list, please. Is he willing to relocate? That's the first question.
