we kinda settled the 3/4 and synthetic business so there shouldn't be any
confusion anymore.

Not bad, really, when you consider it's for sure the right stuff.

 $13.20 for a quart.

Yeah, but around here it's near impossible to find DOT 4 at FLAPs. The only
straight DOT 4 brake fluid I've found around here is made by some company
called Ferodo and it's $17/liter. You have to go to a speed shop or
someplace like that for anything else. I figure $13/quart at the MB dealer is
about the same I would pay elsewhere

Plus it comes in the cool gray plastic bottle with the pretty MB label. Looks
nice on the shelf.

I use the MB dealer stuff now too. Reasonably priced, and for me at least,
very convenient.

which is great but it's still DOT 3/4 and synthetic, my point being that
those issues are already shown here to be specious by young rick. do you
guys read any posts more than 10 words?

3/4 and 4 is the same thing. it's all straight 4

with no evidence.

What we know is the 4 is different from 3, and that the 3/4 is called
synthetic, but there is no evidence proving compatibility with older
MB brake rubber parts. Nobody is telling that the synthetic is
made from. It is essentially some bug juice that has a higher
boiling point than the old DOT3 junk, and that boiling point happens
to be at least as high as DOT4. But boiling point alone does not
prevent it from eating the rubber parts. It may well be
compatible, but there is no evidence to demonstrate that.

THere was no such conclusion. Only anecdotal evidence that one brake
system lasted a couple of years with no damage evident yet from the
3/4 stuff.

Thanks Hendrik, a good article, but it does not address the synthetic
stuff that provoked this discussion. In the USA, the appearance of
this DOT3/4 synthetic stuff has resulted in DOT 4 being
discontinued in most places. So, I was glad when I found some
quarts of Castrol GT brake fluid (DOT4)

Re: [MBZ] DOT4 Brake Fluid

2014-01-03 Thread rickknoble
Last article. I now know more about brake fluid than
I really ever wanted. Read this all the way through and
you can too.

http://www.mossmotors.com/SiteGraphics/Pages/Brake_Fluid/brake_fluid_long.html

DOT 3,3/4, 4 brake fluid is glycol based.

Adding borates raises the boiling point for DOT4.

Being that all of the above mentioned brake fluids are glycol based, they are
all also synthetic.

I have drawn the conclusion, possibly errant, that DOT 3/4 fluid is actually
DOT 4, just labeled as 3/4 to imply that it is reverse compatible with systems
that are said to require DOT3 fluid.

Toyota has complained about using Dot4 fluid in some of their autos and lists
only dot3 as specified for use. I will not be referencing any article on this
as no one here probably cares.

BTW, Citroën and RR use something entirely different.

A very informative article, all in all.
