hi Tom!

i'd suggest starting with a good set of H4 'euro-code' lamps; truly
good quality lights are definitely worth the money, and you'll quickly
wonder why you didn't switch to a set of 'real' lights sooner!

i've used a variety of them over the last couple of decades in
multiple vehicles, and my preference has been for CibiƩ lamps with Osram
Bulbs. (i'm using a set of Narva +50 bulbs in our 300D now that are
proving to be a close second.)
my issues with the Hellas we've tried are twofold; one is that the
high and low beam patterns are typically too far apart, so that if you
have the high beams aimed properly down the road, the low beams will not
project far enough forward. the second is that the lenses on the Hellas
seem to be more brittle; the H4 users in my family have had more Hella
lenses break than all others combined.
as for anything labeled Zenon/Xenon, i wouldn't spend *anything* for
it. most of what's advertised under the misuse of those terms isn't
appropriate, and some is actually detrimental. if you're using true H4
sealed bulb lamps, you have your choice of bulbs in a variety of Wattage
combinations already if you decide you need more than the typical
55/60W. (most people quickly find out that with proper lamps, they don't
need extra wattage like they thought they might.)

try what's been working for most of the rest of the world where they
weren't subject to the arcane absurdities of DOT lighting regulations
first, then see if you need to do anything else. ;-)

this can can be a lot of help:

Anyone hook up these Hella lights with zenon bulbs on a 123 chassis? If
so

is it a noticeable difference, is it worth 87 smackers plus freight?

Those, if Euro standard, will use H4 halogens instead of Xenon (no
Xenon discharge lamps that long ago!). They will be a vast improvement
on the DOT headlights, and $87 is cheap.

I'd go for it, I replaced the headlights on my 87 300D after an
encounter with a giant wood rat -- the difference is hard to believe if
you haven't experienced it.

Which Hella lights? Are they xenon short-arc, or glorified halogen (quartz
iodide) bulbs with xenon and maybe blue tint.

87 smackers sounds a little cheap for real xenon short-arcs, so it must be
something else. I've just changed from USA spec lights to Euro lights with
halogen bulbs. Makes a lot of difference. Even the Euro lights were more
than 87 smackers -- IIRC they were more than 87 smackers apiece, from
eBay.

If we're talking about the H4 replacements for 7 DOT sealed-beam lamps,
I know J.C. Whitney has them pretty cheap. I've heard the reflectors on
the J.C. Whitney ones tend to tarnish, though.

You might get better bang for the bucks to swap out to the real euro
headlamps with better lighting all around. I found that Gump using
euros was much better than upgrades to the sealed beams she came with.
No matter who made the sealed beams, those euro bulbs were just better

What you want, for the cheapest/easiest thing, is to replace the USDOT
sealed beams with the Hella aftermarket E-code rounds. Performance
Products has them. There are also Cibie units that may be even better.
Then you put in H4 bulbs, and if you really want light you can relay
them and put in hotter than normal bulbs. Magnifique. For even more
high-beam fun you can replace the fogs with the 5 Hela E-code high
beams. But then you'd probably want to put some bumper-mount fogs
on to replace the stocks, assuming you ever get bad fog where you are.

I wear yellow tinted safety glasses for squash and they brighten the court
considerably. You may want to consider ordering prescription lenses in
yellow.
