Mine is a 5spd. Mpg will be down because of our light winter fuel, figure an extra 10% just from that, so I could adjust to 37mpg... Then add on the fact that I've been driving the stink out of it. I've been quite pleased with the extra power of the 2.2l over my 240D. Really? I keep forgetting to use 5th, I've gotten so used to a 4spd after 50kmi. I'm probably going an extra 10-15 miles out of my 80 mile round trip commute in 4th when I could be in 5th. I figure thats 50-75 miles a week. Like Marshall said, the 61x engines may produce more soot, at least mine did. Johnny B's don't but he's probably the exception, lol. On a diesel the limiting factor is usually the soot load, assuming you don't have a bypass 'TP' filter. When you hit 2%, it's time to change. On a gas engine, I believe the limit will be the TBN number along with wear metals, etc. Once again this varies by driving style, engine condition, number of cold starts, etc. For normal use, I suspect a lot of gassers can go the same 10-20k between changes if the engine is in good shape. Oil filter capacity is another factor... the MB diesels have oversize filters, but the gassers may not. So, some engines may need filter changes every 5k or something. (??) There's a really interesting test/study at this link. I found the part interesting where adding a quart of fresh oil substantially boosted the TBN numbers. On hilly terrain you'd want to keep the revs in the sweet spot to avoid lugging. I drove a 2.2 5spd for a long time, great combination. I love 1st being so low that you need not increase rpms on take off, they're near impossible to stall. Humming along nicely at 80-90 in 5th. To answer your question: I suppose I'll drive with the ripped boot as long as I can. I'm hoping that will be a bit longer than this trip. No noises yet. I packed both ripped boots (trying to get it up toward the joint) with grease, then wrapped them to try and keep as much grease in the vicinity as possible. I was told by my brother that I'm wasting my time - the grease will all just fly out, and I should just leave it alone and drive (so less dirt would be attracted), but I thought the more grease placed in there, the better. Thoughts? I will try to be creative later, once home. I am thinking of sewing them up with fishing line, then gluing the seam with gorilla glue. I know - generic - but may as well shoot for the money savings. It's flexible. 3) $12 used axle from the U-Pull. Might last the life of the car. -- Jim

So, remind me - What sort of car is this? My 76 300D doesn't do nearly that well. I was getting about 29 MPG on the highway last summer and that is calculated on the imperial gallon which is of course 20% bigger than the US gallon.
