Sorry it took me so long to follow the link and see the photos - the 1st
photo that appears is an incredible view of what the men faced once the big
door was dropped - it looks like the German positions are a mile away - it's
amazing that *any* men made it across all that open land!

While the smoke probably helped the men avoid some enemy fire it also
made it tougher for the Navy ships to use their guns against the pillboxes -
destroyers finally closed near the beach and risked grounding to allow them
to fire nearly pointblank into the pilboxes. Surviving Germans said they
had no chance against that firepower - the pillboxes were designed to
withstnd bombing attacks and land attacks but having a 5 gun firing
firectly into the slits gave them *no* chance. Thanks to the destroyers
many enemy positions were destroyed allowing the ground pounders to advance.

Re: [MBZ] June 6, 1944

2008-06-21 Thread Wilton Strickland
One of my brother's men on Omaha beach, seventeen-year-old US Navy Seaman
Bob Guere, in less than 30 minutes after he had been drafted into the
infantry by an Army colonel on the beach, single-handedly destroyed one of
those pillboxes by crawling on his belly to directly beneath one of the gun
slits and tossing an explosive satchel through it. For his actions, he was
awarded the Silver Star. At the end of my interview with him on Sep 11,
'01, (yes, the day of the WTC destruction) he reached into his shirt pocket
and pulled out a photo while saying, Here I am standing in front of that
same pillbox on Jun 6 of this year.

I had the very distinct honor and pleasure of interviewing several of my
brother's men and several of the equally brave Coasties who delivered them
to the beach on that fateful day of June 6, 1944, the memory of which should
make all Americans, British, Canadians and other allies stand tall with
pride. I was also highly honored and deeply humbled to present the
Presidential Unit Citation to members of the unit, 6th Naval Beach
Battalion, who had not yet received it - 57 years overdue. I was ten years
old when those brave men stormed that beach. I'm appalled that it took 57
years and a 67-year-old RETIRED officer of the US Air Force to officially
tell them, Thank you.

Still and forever humbled, Wilton

Re: [MBZ] June 6, 1944

2008-06-08 Thread LarryT
Another branch that gets little credit is the Merchant Marine. I need
to check but I seem to recal hearing they lost more men to enemy action than
any other. Some men were torpedoed and rescued by another ship in the
convoy only to be sunk again - some men were sunk as many as 3 times in one
voyage! Most of the ships were without much to shoot back with - and the
Germans used long distance airplaces to bomb the ships.

All those ships in the water off Normandy are part merchant ships and part
warships - and the Germans were targeting the merchant ships as well as the
warships.

IIRC the Merchant Marine veterans had trouble taking advantage of the
benefits promised to the other services. Eventually they were successful I
believe..

An overwhelming majority.

I am sorry for ranting -- we sort of get left out of the reporting of what
happened that historical day. And to be honest, the Coasties who survived
the drop-off went back to the mother-ship, grabbed a cup of coffee, took a
shower, and *then* reflected on what had happened -- and most likely had to
run for an extended time in the head. (For you non-sailors, the head is
the toilet.)

Actually, I think he overwhelming majority (approaching 100%) of the folks
driving the landing vehicles were USCG. After all, it was supposed to be
shallow water! :-)

I will have to research that.

Yep. Thanks for reminding me. We salute them.

My mother was 12 (she was 20 when I was born).

Getting those sailors off the beach probably saved their lives - the beach
was a killing field. To think of what all those *teenagers* did never fails
to amaze me when thinking about it. Many of the kids died without firing a
shot while other reacted to life and death situation by being *heros*.

I wonder what the world would be like if we were in the same situation
today?

Fighting Hitler and Tojo at the same time and kids could not volunteer fast
enough. In one small town 3 or 4 18 yr olds committed suicide after being
refused entry into service -

I turned 10 four days after my brother, Lewis, and others of that finest of
generations stormed onto/into France. I was not quite 8 when another
brother, Jerry, helped to deliver Doolittle's men and 16 B-25's on the
carrier, Hornet, to within striking distance of Japan. I was 11 when
another brother, Carson, rode a halftrack into Germany in '45, about the
same time Lewis, as Chief-of-the-Boat delivered troops, supplies during
 the
invasion of Okinawa. (Okinawa, is that spelled right? 'Doesn't look
 right.)

There's no way that we can ever thank that finest of generations for
saving the world from Hitler and Tojo and their henchmen.

 Humbly,

 Wilton
