Re: [MBZ] Mystery noise
A test for a bad rear half axle is to weave left and right at speed; if the noise changes, then the side to investigate is the opposite of the turning direction when noise is louder (ex. Turn left, noise increases, this means that right side axle/bearings are suspect). -Max -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Fmiser Sent: Wednesday, February 03, 2010 1:01 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Mystery noise > > "Rich Thomas" wrote: > > > > though a bad CVjoint will clack -- does it make the sound in > > reverse? > Allan Streib wrote: > > No, actually it does not seem to at all. Brakes? though a bad CVjoint will clack -- does it make the sound in reverse? When mine was going bad on the TD it made more clacking in reverse. --R Allan Streib wrote: Still trying to sort out a noise that I get at low speeds in my W123 300D. It's most evident at around 10-15 MPH. It seems to be coming from the rear of the car, I'd say the passenger side but it is a little hard for me to pinpoint. It's sort of a mix between a scraping and a muted tapping sound. It varies with speed. The frequency seems to be higher than wheel RPM. Happens when rolling in neutral or driving or slowing from a higher speed. I checked transmission fluid and it was a bit below the add mark. I topped it up, took about 3/4 quart, and that did not really change anything. I'm starting to suspect CV joints, though the boots look intact (they do have the typical cracks in the boots but I can't see any evidence of oil leaking yet). Could it be the differential? It does look like there's a bit of seepage around the axles there. An automatic transmission has friction parts that wear, heat up, etc. This is what causes the fluid to smell and look funny. A open differential just has gears. That solves NOTHING except the noise if the cause is the collapse of one or more engine mounts. When they get bad enough, a sudden stop can shove the engine right through the radiator (making a mess of the fan, fan clutch, belt tensioner and sometime even the timing cover as well as the radiator). As engine speed changes, so does the position of the engine (that is balanced on three elastic mounts). If the front mounts have not been measured, you can't rule them out even if they have been recently replaced. The rear (transmission) mount is much more difficult to check. If it's original, I can almost guaranty it should be replaced. Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) Take a flat blade screwdriver and pry the fan shroud clips up. Move the fan shroud to a new position where it's not rubbing. Tap the clips back into place. Problem solved. That sounds like something I can live with - nudging the shroud possibly. I wonder if the intermittent nature of the sound is explained by the fan clutch action. But this doesn't explain why the sound would not happen at idle or at the lower RPMs. Wait, maybe the torqueing of the engine added to the mix explains things. I'll have to think about this. I'm good at sitting around thinking as opposed to wrenching. May be related to WAY OVERFILLING the transmission if transmission fluid overflow did in the rear engine (transmission) mount (but I doubt it). The noise is likely the fan rubbing against the fan shroud! Very common after motor mounts start to fail. Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) Re: [MBZ] Mystery Noise Time - Embarrasingly Loud
Actually I should also mention another clue - and right now this is my number one candidate. Could the tranny being overfilled be the cause of this noise? Yes, i know it's quite bad to have overfilled tranny. In my defense, the level was way below the add line, and I only added one pint. I thought I was being very conservative, as I estimated that it really needed something like a quart and a half or so. But now, the level is way over the full mark! I don't know what's going on what this stupid tranny level. The reason I suspect the tranny level as the possible noise-maker here is that I am relating the noise to the noise that an auto tranny can make when put in park while vehicle is still rolling. You know, that rapid clicking noise?
