It's been sitting so long that even the patina has come loose.

There is something wrong with that article! It says,

When Hermann died at age 62 in October 2002,

That means Hermann was born in 1940.

Greg, 53,

That means Greg was born in 1949, when Hermann was 9.

and brother, Mark, 50, took over running Bentley Zionsville

That means Mark was born in 1952, when Hermann was 12.

That allowed the mechanic to found Albers Rolls-Royce in 1963 as
a service garage and later develop a solid luxury car business.

That means Hermann founded Albers Rolls-Royce when he was 23.

I have seen that red glyptal stuff on trimmers.

I also saw, when looking under my brand-new 1972 220D/8, yellow paint
marks on bolts/nuts all over, particularly on the components of the
driveshaft, like the bolts and nuts on the rubber donuts.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. The Fastest Possible Way to Spend/Lose Money

2024-02-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
LOL, in a 1989 Tucker Sno-Cat.

The dash panels on the machine are all flat sheets attached to a welded steel
frame. The heater vents are circular similar to a W123 but held together with a
thin spring that doesn't stay clipped in place for crap. These things vibrate
terribly in the best of times, the clips don't have a chance. The panels the
ducts are in have gotten hard and all the screw holes have broken out.

The ducts are 2" and at this point just worn out. They're hard to get on and
wont stay.

So I ordered an RV ducting kit off eBay, accidentally bought 3", whoops. Then I
got a sheet of 1/8" acrylic and made a new panel. This was dumb, acrylic is
much too brittle. Got the sheet cut to approximately the right shape, got a
duct installed. The eBay has vents that clip together, way better than the
Tucker ones, still not as good as a W123 though.

Anyway, made myself a new panel, cut a slit in the 3" duct to neck it down to
2" and held it on with a clamp: https://photos.app.goo.gl/gFT5z3pejRbjfRJk7

It flows air wy better than it did before. If it ever snows I'll at least
be able to defrost the windshield. I need to rig the other side with a similar,
but better deal and remake the panel for this side. I'm thinking an HDPE sheet
would work better and be less brittle. Found a place online to get them.

The machine is for sale if anybody wants a big toy:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/KD93dGt6xMVH73qh9

We're going to start at $35,000 but would accept $30,000. Trying to sell off 2
machines to buy 1 newer one. We don't really have enough operators for all the
machines we have anyway...

In storage 18 years. I can’t even imagine what PRK would charge to get a pink
slip for that. If a boat is a hole in the water you throw money into, this is a
hole in the earth , with a small black hole in it, that you throw money into.

2024-02-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
No doubt, there would be other hurdles, but if you just wanted the look
of the Rolls, you could likely solve the problems without rebuilding a
Rolls.

I am sure I must have told the story about my mechanic son working on a
vintage Rolls that essentially had no brakes. If I recall correctly it
had some sort of hydraulic setup that ran off of the transmission. Parts
were either unobtainable or so expensive that it made no sense. They
installed a vacuum booster intended for a Chevy Corvette and that helped
a bit. Ultimately, they swapped the left side brake shoes to the right
side and vice versa, so that the leading shoe was opposite of what it
had been, and that helped a lot. My son did not think the brakes were
all that wonderful even then, but the owner was satisfied. He only drove
it in parades or something like that so didn't care that they were not
state of the art.

Body looks pretty good.

Yank out the RR engine and transmission, install an LS type SBC and carry on.
