I think you've hit on something with the news coverage. Ever sit and

I don't know what it's become like where you are, but this is a change that
has occurred during the last generation. I blame busing for part of it.
When I was in elem. school (60s) we had a neighborhood school - we walked
to school - 8-10 residential blocks away - or rode bikes. In the summer the
school was open with things for the neighborhood kids to do - each classroom
had a highschool volunteer who again - was local to the neigborhood - who
ran games and kept order. There was a baseball diamond behind the school
and we could always find enough kids to start a game.

Also the school library was open so the (local) kids could check out books.
IIRC the whole operation was run by volunteers who I recall as being high
school kids - who were usually big brothers and sisters of someone we were
playing with.

At the end of the day we walked or rode bikes home. After dinner we often
went out to play again - and would stay out until 10 or so (this was when we
were in low-mid teens. Younger kids were around too but usually had an
older sibling there also.

Then came busing the neighborhood concept left. The schools were still
there but the kids and sometime teachers were from other parts of town.
BTW, this was in Hampton Va - not an urban area - mostly suburban but the
housing was close to shopping -

Seems like we started hearing about crime a lot more since then - maybe it
was 24 hr news? maybe not - but it seemed like kids weren't safe anymore so
the parents had to drive them. I guess it was likely a combination of
things ---but I think we are worse off then before -

Ohh man, he is starting to sound like the current white house resident,
 that's scary stuff.
Now if he said the way to save fuel is to get off your fat behind and
walk, that would make more sense but the voters wouldn't like that, just
like they wouldn't like being told that their supersized urban vehicles
are too big for their needs. Remember Mom needs that monster truck to
drive little Billy to soccer practice which is a 10 min walk away but if
she keeps the tires properly inflated she will reverse climate change.

There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. Making
sure your tires are properly inflated - simple thing. But we could save
all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling - if
everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups?
You'd actually save just as much

Most of the BioD produced in the US is shipped to the EU. Seems that
we cheapskates are unwilling to pay the 5.50 or so a gallon it would
be at retail in the US.

This is the wholesale price, FOB Plant as of 2 days ago:
Soy Biodiesel Additive B99.9 - 4.2800
To this is added shipping, $.50-.60 per gallon of taxes and the
distributor's margin, and the retailer's margin.

I am no Obama fan but I wouldn't be surprised if that were true 20
years ago---that is, if we didn't have computerized engine management
and cars still needed tune-ups. Your typical '70s or '80s carbureted,
minimally electronic engine could easily lose 25% of its mpg if not
properly maintained. And tires still do make a difference, of course,
though not nearly as much.

and cars still needed tune-ups. Your typical '70s or '80s carbureted,
minimally electronic engine could easily lose 25% of its mpg if not
properly maintained. And tires still do make a difference, of course,
 though not nearly as much.

Not pushing the 3k mile oil change and people following the factory
recommended oil change interval might be pretty helpful as well. I
think most cars suggest over 5k nowadays.

Hard ride, poorer handling (i.e., safety), I don't know about wear.

What exactly do you tune up on a newer car? New plugs every 100k

then if you use cheap gas?

The sad thing is that there are people out there who listen to this,

Right. JFK was born the son of a mobster. BHOJr was born the son of a

Wear will be heavily on the middle. PSI depends more on the tire than
saying 40psi is to high for on the road. I run mine at 45psi because
they are mushrooms. Next time I will get a smaller sidewall.
Hydroplaning, I would think there would be less chance of it as the
contact patch would be smaller making less of a surface to hydroplane on.

Thanks - I worry about hydroplaning around here (D.C.), especially just
after it rains for the first time in a week or more. The moisture combines
with a residue of gasoline and oil built up on the road surface to create a
very slippery condition...

Very true. Oil companies are exporting all our diesel, which drives
up the cost of feedstock for BioD, since nobody can afford to
transport, plant or harvest at a cost that allows the refiner to make
the fuel.

One of the Imperium Oil attorneys was dumped and ended up at SWMBA's
firm. Sad tales of woe and subterfuge in the oil industry and how
all our diesel is going to EU for big bucks, since our puny $$ is
worth nothing over there and more profit is made shipping crude here,
refining it, then putting it on a ship for there. Still cheaper than
bothering to sell it here.
