Re: [MBZ] OT: Went and voted yesterday
Sheesh! That's *exactly* the kind of comment that makes me committed to voting to him if he is ever in a position to run a national race -- He's Da Man! Nothing wrong with stating your position - except for that MSM problem. I am encouraged by the fact that cable news continues to chip away at the MSMs dominance. I would think the upcoming change to digital reception would enhance that chipping - Dr Keyes needs a shot with a national audience - course the MSM will not let that happen - Larry T (66 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs . - Original Message - From: Allan Streib [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Friday, February 08, 2008 3:03 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Went and voted yesterday LarryT [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I can only assume he's thinking of a different Alan Keyes than you I are famiiar with - an excellent conservative who would be a great candidate. Re: [MBZ] OT: Went and voted yesterday
That's the Alan Keyes who IIRC ran for public offic in MD and got trounced because he is so totally unappealing to mainstream voters. So when people generalize about Harvard liberals remind them that Alan Keyes is an alumnus. Speaking of which, Harvard's new President Drew Gilpin Faust is a self-described archive nut who has written some amazing books about the Civil War that rely heavily on contemporary documents. One of her books concludes, based on archival research, that Southern WOMEN cost the Rebels the war. She was interviewed in yesterday's Wash. Post [excerpt follows]: Moving on to the Civil War itself, Faust found herself asking questions about the Confederate home front. Three out of four white men of military age went off to battle,' she says, which left white women -- untrained and unprepared culturally for their new role -- to manage slaves and try to keep up agricultural productivity. Going into serious archive-rat mode, she culled evidence from these women's letters and other writings and turned it into 'Mothers of Invention,' her best-known book. Published in 1996, 'Mothers' vividly evokes the difficulties Southern women had coping with war and social upheaval. Beyond that, it suggests that overburdened and eventually disillusioned women played a larger role in the Confederacy's failure to sustain itself than Civil War historians have recognized. Some years earlier, Faust had made this suggestion more bluntly in an academic paper. 'It may well have been because of its women,' she wrote, that the South lost the Civil War.' Great, provocative stuff.
