I started out rebuilding and repairing Miller 400A "buzz boxes" (as we called
them) for pipeline and tank builders for one of my Dad's customers right out of
high school. With the right stick you could butt weld 1/4" plate and thicker
with one of those things. Worked on Lincoln Pipeliners, too, the engine driven
Lincolns that used a 4 cylinder Continental engine. Those things were the 240D
of the welding business.

Never formally learned to weld, but I can push a mean puddle with a stick
welder. We had MIG and TIG welders, too, but those took some time and practice
to master.

Also learned why you never wanted shirts or pants with cuffs when you welded,
too...

Re: [MBZ] OT Welder

2022-02-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes

https://kickinghorsewelders.com/products/kickinghorse-a100-arc-welder

I bought a Kicking Horse 110v stick welder a few years ago to use on my little
loader project. I wanted something that could accomplish a little more
penetration than my Lincoln HandyMIG could get. I've been very impressed with
it. Previously I'd used some no-name Chinese AC welder my dad got at a tool
show and was terribly unimpressed. This thing starts arcs easily and lays down
nice weld.

I've got the equivalent Harbor Freight welder which is actually a little less
powerful:
https://www.harborfreight.com/welding/welders/tig-stick-welders/arc/80-amp-inverter-arc-welder-64057.html
Notice that it's actually more expensive...
I bought that one when the tractor seat broke on me back in 2020 and I couldn't
get it repaired on a Saturday afternoon. Frankly I was STUNNED by the quality
of weld I managed to pull of with that thing. That repair is actually some of
the best looking welding I've ever done. It was quite fiddly too, a fairly
small chunk of the seat base failed at the pivot point which left the seat
flopping around potentially dropping me off the back...

Anybody wanting to learn stick welding or to just weld at home would do well
with the Kicking Horse.

I think I paid about $300 for my HandyMig, its about $350 now. It's paid for
itself many times over...

From what I have heard/read, the low cost MIG welders all work fine in as much
as they are just big transformers. Where they cheap out is in the quality of
the wire feed mechanism, the gun/torch and cables.

By the time you buy a cheap welder, then upgrade the gun, the gas hose, the
ground clamp, the wire feed, and put a usefully-long power cord on it, you need
to compare those costs and the extra time to what a Miller or Lincoln machine
would have cost.

I'm not familiar with the Yes welder specifically.

Reminds me of when, as a young college student, I built a set of speakers and
thought it would be clever to use standard electrical extension cords as
speaker wire, so I fitted standard 3-prong 120VAC connectors on the speaker
cabinets. Very easy to unplug and move around as needed. Of course nobody would
*ever* be stupid enough to plug one into a wall outlet... If I had been even
more clever I would have used the neutral and ground legs.

2022-02-06 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I hope you have good luck with it.

I stuck with name brand welders. I cannot claim to be a proficient
welder but the whole process interests me. I have a Lincoln 220V  180A
Mig and a Lincoln 225A AC/DC 125A  stick welder. I had a Lincoln 225A AC
welder for a while and upgraded to the one with DC as well. The AC stick
welder worked well for sticking heavier steel together. I initially
bought it to repair/rebuild a boat trailer and it worked well. Must be
more than 15 years since my son and I did the boat trailer and nothing
has come apart. We were both novices and enjoyed doing it. We had 2
helmets so we could watch each other weld too.

The other logical choice is the Miller brand.

I also bought a 220V spot welder last year but have yet to use it. I
have acquired some further bits from Banggood to control the spot
welder. A fellow I know is rebuilding an old Porsche body from the early
60s using a spot welder. He says that is how they were built at the
factory so he sees no reason not to do the same.

I see lots of offshore stuff offered these days and wonder about
quality. I did hold my nose and buy a Chinese made plasma cutter just
after Christmas but have not used it at all. Too cold here to work
outside so will have to wait for spring. I bought the plasma cutter from
a Canadian company that has a good reputation for standing behind the
stuff they sell so if it does not perform, I should be OK. I really need
to upgrade the amount of electrical power into my garage so that I can
use these things to their full potential.
