I mean, you do that at Burbank. The good thing about it is the load and unload
from both ends of the plane at the same time...

If it has a jet bridge it's not too bad.

At the local airport here you would be going down stairs and walking
across the apron to the terminal.

Re: [MBZ] Plane broke down

2020-07-14 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Worst trips I've ever had were the time I was flying into Louisville on Eastern
in a 727 and we got caught in a micro-burst on final approach and flying from
Philadephia to DC in a Twin Otter in a hurricane (David, '79).

The micro-burst was terrifying -- just as the pilot rotated (those 727s are
rear heavy and always droop on landing) the plane fell out of the air having
lost all lift due to sudden tailwind. Dropped off to port pretty hard -- I
don't think the wingtip missed the ground by much -- and slammed down on the
port main gear. Hard enough to see the cabin twist and the overheads all
popped open. Didn't know it at the time, but the standard drill for a 727
under those conditions is to attempt to reduce impact by applying any lift
available to prevent driving the gear up into the body as the result will be a
severe and immediate fire, so we bounced up, landed hard on the starboard gear,
bounced up again, bounced on both gears, and finally slammed down. By this
time the runway ahead was pretty short, so the pilot applied full brakes and
full reverse thrust.

Quite the experience if you've not been on a 727 making a minimum rollout
landing -- face in the seatback in front of you, all sorts of crap that had
fallen out of the overheads sliding down the aisle. I believe it's 2000 ft or
less from touchdown to full stop on those things, they were designed
specifically for short runway high altitude steep takeoff and landing
situations.

It was s stop-over continuing flight, but everyone, including the pilots, got
off and walked around, and I would assume the plane was looked over pretty
well, we were late leaving. Didn't even blow a tire, good pilot.

I don't want to do that again.

The Twin Otter trip was also bad, plane was dipping and diving so badly they
couldn't serve coffee, no way to get the cup to your face. Never seen the
ailerons move significantly on a commercial flight, and they were flapping
around all over the place as we zoomed up and down and sideways. Water
dripping out of the AC vents, No one got sick, but I think that was because
we were all too scared.

Flight from DC to Charlottesville a couple hours later wasn't much better, and
I got completely soaked getting to the terminal. Had to wait for the tornados
to die down before we left DC, but at least the aircraft was a YS11 and big
enough it didn't get tossed around like a cork. Still pretty rough.

Re: [MBZ] Plane broke down

2020-07-14 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I recall days like that flying around FWA. I was working the ramp one afternoon
when a small plane landed, 3 people got out looking pale as ghosts and
trembling. They couldn’t speak. Finally after a minute or two the pilot got
himself communicative and said they had been dodging a thunderstorm and next
thing he knew they had dropped 7000ft in about 20seconds (that would be
21000fpm!) and truly thought they were going to die in a cornfield.

They hung around for an hour or so, got their wits about them then took off
again but none of them, including the pilot, looked particularly interested in
doing so.

One jet bridge?! That's a huge airport compared to what was in Pullman,
Washington, when I flew in and out of there in the late '60s.

There was one small building, perhaps 2000 ft^2, the asphalt parking lot
and plane parking area, and the runway.

When it was time for the plane to leave, it taxied down the runway to the
appropriate end, turned around, and waited. The person who ran the
airport came out with a microphone on a long cord, looked around,
and told the pilot it was OK to take off.

Re: [MBZ] Plane broke down

2020-07-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I actually saw a woman get off a puddle jumper and kiss the ground once…

Riding a twin turboprop commuter from Denver to Albuquerque via Santa Fe in
April during the afternoon. Loads and loads of spring storms popping up on the
eastern slopes as we made our way south that day. As a private pilot who flew
most of the time during Midwest summers, I had encountered more than my share
of such fun, but I will say it was a wild ride even for me. Every time we hit a
downdraft this woman would scream, which didn’t help things.

When we landed in Santa Fe, which was a “stop props and drop” stop, she
literally pushed to the front of the cabin right behind flight attendant and
nearly pushed her down the stairs, after which she was on her knees wailing
about how she would never, ever fly again.

It was quite the performance, with the ramp crew and others standing around
looking at her as she carried on.

She was ticketed through to Albuquerque, I would add. The flight attendant told
us so after we got back in the air…

Kaleb,
You know it's a bad flight when the crew passes out knee pads so you can

Outside air temps in Phoenix, Arizona today are 117 F. At the same time,
Arizona is having a record spike in new covid infection rate...
So guess the "Heat will kill it" fantasy falls into the "Unicons make
great pets" bin.

Have to go polish the fleet of flying pigs, so we can do a formation
flyover at the funeral home for covid dead..

So, because it's too hot on the plane, they're keeping you on the plane,
on the ground where it's hot?

Re: [MBZ] Plane broke down

2020-07-13 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I might not make it out alive. The girl up front starts pushing a bunch of
buttons and the plane starts making a strange noise then alarms with red lights
start going off. Not sure what all that was about. Still waiting on bags to be
loaded. This is the sort of thing you deal with when flying small planes to
small airports.

The air conditioner is almost that simple! At least 20 or so
years ago it was ram air makes it compressed, air-to-air
intercooler to cooled down compressed air, let air expand and it's
cold, let it into the cabin.

Holy crap it’s really hot on this plane. Imagine sitting in your car with the
windows rolled up and no AC.

One you get to altitude you just use bleed air from the engines to keep the
cabin from freezing to death. If we would have just taken off we would have
been in the air by now and it would not have mattered. We have already been
sitting in the 100 degree Texas heat for over an hour.
