Shameless plug:

Car's in Spokane WA. (1990 560 SEL) Was my daily driver until I went on a WFH
regime. A moment's inattention put me into a guardrail a couple of winters ago.
I picked up a new fender and front door, and lights, at the boneyard.
Not yet installed, but I plan to swap the front fender, which was the worst
damage and which is easy to do. Damage on rear quarter and door
not too bad, would have taken rear door too but the donor was an SD,
not SDL/SEL.

Sat for some time, then the starter stopped engaging. Now has reman
starter. Is on its second tranny. According to my records I've spent
nearly $7,500 on it over the years, including its original $2,000 purchase
price.
Cruise control and HVAC working fine, last I knew.

White exterior, palomino (?) interior. Car is simply surplus to our needs,
and my wife has always hated it. (Due to the acquisition process, not the
car itself.) Politically-motivated sale. The only thing I'm going to miss is
the heated seats. Those (4) work _nice_.

I was going to put it on CL at $2500 and see what happened.

Re: [MBZ] Prices

2021-08-15 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Can't offer any help on that issue. The Courts hold absolute hostage anyone
convicted of drunk driving. They mandate what can be installed, how it has
to be certified, how often it has to be inspected, and what it has to
report. Also, who can install such a device and how it must be "tamper
proof".
All backed up by the drunk driving laws passed by legislature.
Part of those laws also state the cost of the machine, the install, and the
court release to remove said machine, must be borne by the individual
convicted.
The companies which make or install the machines know the charge ticket is
punched in their favor, so no price breaks are given.
The legal intent is to make driving a "sobering experience" used only to
drive to work, and your court ordered AA meetings, so you can pay the huge
fines imposed for driving drunk.
I know all this because of an employee who spent 5 years in prison for
killing someone with his car while blind drunk, and his conditions of
parole required a vehicle monitor, with GPS locator. If his car was parked
in front of a bar, that was a parole violation and he went directly back to
prison.
Talented worker, as long as he was sober. Ultimately he died of liver
failure after a huge round of binge drinking.

Also, it would be remiss not to include the cost of the divorce lawyers and

i really have no set business hours, gerry, beyond usually being around
from around 10 to 6ish on weekdays as i can talk to suppliers and ship
then. i haven't responded to your email as i have no one to talk to about
removeable diode assembly. i'm presuming you don't mean the voltage
regulator in which case i'm wondering where one would even get such item.
i couldn't figure that out till monday as i'd have to see if it can be
special ordered from bosch but it's a request i've never seen before as
most people don't rebuild their own alternator, but at most will just
replace a bad voltage regulator and otherwise just the whole unit

an aftermarket hueco glow relay is 105 bucks based on the pricing scheme i
have for you guys. they seem adequate and tend to be made in germany (i
can't actually check that until monday) but they aren't the read deal ones
mercedes uses, which are hella and $179

the vacuum actuator is probably going to be genuine and $35 as i haven't
seen any oem or decent aftermarket ones around in a while, but maybe i can
find one monday

air cleaner mounts that are not APA/URO about 2 to 2.50 each. instrument
cluster bulbs are under a buck each.

Not knowing the official name and too lazy to look it up, I described the
voltage regulator as a removable diode assembly. It's the little gizmo
held on with two screws that can be replaced without removing the
alternator.

I can get a hueco glow relay for $85.xx plus $5.xx frt elsewhere, but your
price is close enough considering.

...

Here's a corrected order; all for '83 300D:

1 Hueco glow plug relay

1 Voltage regulator for Bosch alternator

6 Air cleaner mounts

20 Instrument cluster bulbs

(I'll order the vacuum actuator with a later order since I want to check the
condition of the others which may need replacing as well.)

I'll call you Monday.

1 Hueco glow plug relay

1 Voltage regulator for Bosch alternator

6 Air cleaner mounts

i couldn't figure that out till monday as i'd have to see if it can be
special ordered from bosch but it's a request i've never seen before as
most people don't rebuild their own alternator, but at most will just
replace a bad voltage regulator and otherwise just the whole unit.

an aftermarket hueco glow relay is 105 bucks based on the pricing scheme
i

have for you guys. they seem adequate and tend to be made in germany (i
can't actually check that until monday) but they aren't the read deal
ones

mercedes uses, which are hella and $179

the vacuum actuator is probably going to be genuine and $35 as i haven't
seen any oem or decent aftermarket ones around in a while, but maybe i
can

find one monday

air cleaner mounts that are not APA/URO about 2 to 2.50 each.
instrument

cluster bulbs are under a buck each.

Chain FLAPS put them out of business too. Earlier, there had been a

side-by-side, which was about $1200 in 1999. A very similar model from
Whirlpool is now about $700, and the latest, greatest, all the bells and

either direction WRT refrigerators. I'm thinking that refrigerator
prices have dropped by about 40% since 1999.

I hear that the primary reason that the Canadian economy is doing better than
the US economy is that our housing
industry is still strong. We are still building and people are still paying
higher prices for homes. There is a
suggestion that that is a bubble that will ultimately burst.

On the rising prices issue, I also note an ad in the local paper this week for
7/16 aspenite sheathing for almost
$11 per sheet. Last summer I was paying between $7 and $8 and it had been
cheaper in the spring. I think it was

Have not looked elsewhere to see if that is the going rate but suspect it is.

Except on computers and stuff of that nature.

I have a laser printer, copier, fax, scanner machine with 2 paper trays etc
that I bought a number of years back.
It is a Panasonic Workio and I paid through the proverbial nose for it - I
think close to $5K. In any event, it is
considered obsolete and there are apparently no software upgrades for it to
permit me to readily move up to Windows
7. I can go no further than XP I think, although Vista might work. In any
event, the service fellow - it is on an
annual contract for repair, maintenance, and toner - tells me I might want to
just get a new one as the current
model is only about $1K to buy brand new.

I just bought an Acer i7 chip machine with 6 or 8 Gigs of RAM (can't recall and
it is not here ) and a terrabyte of
hard drive etc for just under $1K. I could not buy the parts and put one
together for the cost in the local Staples
store.

I think your situation has been helped tremendously by your bankers, who
seem to have maintained sobriety and skepticism and thus avoided the
sub-prime mortgage mess that our politicians/investment bankers/mortgage
lenders/aspiring home-owners have gotten us into. It is clear to me
that if the bankers and mortgage lenders here in the U.S. of A. had
shown more fiscal sense than greed, we would not be in nearly the mess
we are in now. The whole stinking pile of do-do required many actors to
do their part, and if one class of actors had refused to participate
then maybe things would have turned out a little different.

OK, I'll stop with the politics now, even though I'm flying under the

I've been researching alternatives to conventional stick building for a new

I've wanted to do straw, but it's labor intensive, concrete is not the ideal
stucco material, and the really good stuff like lime plaster takes skill to do.

Prefab domes erected by owner beat paying a contractor to assemble anything
else.

I'm leaning towards a sort of split level two story of conventional
construction. The garage floor will be a few feet higher than the basement
floor. The garage ceiling will be level with the first floor ceiling (13' or so
garage height), and the 2nd floor will be on top of the first floor and garage.
I figure it would take about $25k worth of materials to enclose 2000 sq feet of
living space and 700sq feet of garage. Exterior walls of 2x6 conventional
construction packed full of cellulose, wood basement with 2x8 walls, garage
foundation of foam lego blocks poured full of concrete.
Lots of untinted windows on the south side, with enough low-e glass on the other
three sides to make it legal (stupid California wankers sticking the whole
country with an air conditioning centric building code). Either that, or put
low-e glass all around on the plans and just install proper stuff on the south
wall, hope the inspectors are too stupid to notice. I think I could do the whole
thing for $60k and three months of my time.

One time I was looking at a Menard's house kit, and asked a builder friend how
much he'd charge (labor only) to build the frame. He quoted me $25k IIRC. You
know how many months I'd need to work to earn $25k? And now many weeks it would
take an inexperienced carpenter to frame a house? It'd be far better to take a
leave of absence and DIY.

probably another 4-5 days as they will be mostly cut at the fab
facility, some trimming on-site. I can have the whole addition up and
dried in less than 2 weeks, then I can start doing all the other work.
Much faster than a stick frame structure, and will be much better
insulated (though that aspect is not a huge issue here). I am more
interested in speed and the timber frame is aesthetic, and SIPs and
timber frames just make sense. SIPS for standard stick construction
will save money initially and in the long run too (construction labor
and insulating value) so that sorta offsets the higher initial cost for
material. Insect resistance is better too (good benefit for me).

The guy doing the actual construction work is an architect/builder that
does LEED/green construction, and had a SIP facility at his site but
got out of that and has outsourced to another local facility (or
something, not quite sure how they worked it out). I went up there and
visited the plant which basically consisted of a big glue squirter and
a hydraulic press to squeeze a stack of panels and foam and 2x's
together until the glue set up, and some work benches where they cut the
panels before shipping if that was specced. Fairly low tech, you could
pretty much do the same thing with a big stack of concrete blocks. A
4x24ft x 4.5 panel weighed maybe 150lb if that, fairly easy to deal
with. The foam comes with some holes cut for wire chases, and the
panels are marked so you know where they are.

I made a little blog if you are interested to follow the project, right
now I am waiting for the county to give me my permits, hope to have that
next week and get the foundation started soon thereafter if the concrete
guy ever gets back to me (he says he is starting to get busy, and is my
gating factor now).

That's interesting, Rich---what made you go with SIPs? Upfront cost,
insulating properties, energy tax credits, all of the above?

I've been researching alternatives to conventional stick building for a new
house I plan to build within the next few years or so, in the hope of better
passive climate control, sound deadening, and fire resistance... there are
lots of options, assuming you can find a builder willing to think outside
the box a bit, and get a permit for something other than a plain vanilla
McMansion.

Yep, and the plus model is a smudge faster, but more importantly, it
duplexes.

Plus the 4/4+/5 series (no suffix or m suffix only) are some of the
cheapest per page, based on consumable costs.

Rated life of cartridges is/was conservative, and you would get quite
a bit more than the label said (10-20%!!!), plus no expiration date
chip in the cartridges, and no documented microdot date/serial number
encodings...
