Re: [MBZ] Renewable Biodiesel
So, exactly what is meant by renewable? Have they found a means of sucking up the soot that my diesel leaves behind and converting it back into diesel fuel?? At full capacity, the biorefinery will be able to produce 75 million gallons a year of renewable diesel, a type of biofuel that can be used directly in existing fuel infrastructure, out of animal fats, corn oil and used cooking oil. The facility will use a technology developed by a subsidiary of REG in Tulsa, Okla. Along with renewable diesel, the biorefinery is capable of producing naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas, REG said. By the end of fiscal 2013, the plant had incurred net operating losses of approximately $38 million, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. We are pleased with the progress made and will continue to build upon our success with future planned upgrades to the plant, Derek Winkel, REG executive director of manufacturing operations, said in a statement. Another one Tyson screwed up Tyson controls a lot of the chicken fat in the country, but 75 million gallons a year is a good portion of the chicken fat and yellow grease total availability in the US. I forget the numbers, but reported total sales of yellow grease in the US was somewhere around 100 million gallons a few years ago when I looked into it. Some is not reported, but that plant will drive up the price of yellow grease, if it operates. REG's head shed is right down the road one way the dupont celulosic ethanol plant is the other way. Re: [MBZ] Renewable Biodiesel
Renewable is a manufactured happy word to impart the idea the fuel , or energy source, doesn't come from nasty crude oil ... or God forbid, coal... or, worst of all nuclear... In the case of biodiesel, it's meant to impart the idea that it is taken from a growing plant that can be regrown [without any inclusion of the depletion of soil, water, or cost in crude oil to run the tractors and harvesting equipment to grow the plant.. ] Think happy thoughts.. hum Kum Ba Ya.. and all will be well ... Investigation will show the large biodiesel plant failed to make a profit as soon as government subsidy for renewable energy ran out.. I can say with some authority, having designed and built a biodiesel plant with 20,000,000 gallon per month capacity, in 2007... raw material supply of vegetable oil in that quantity is a serious problem.. Most biodiesel plants left standing will tell you then need raw product to make biodiesel with and can't get it.. It is not a perfect world... I discovered I have OCD ADD ... Everything has to be exactly perfect.. but only for a minute... ;)) Grant... Re: [MBZ] Renewable Biodiesel
To me, the best manifestation of renewable is recycled/repurposed materials. In other words, take a waste product with a high environmental cost to dispose of up and transform it into usable fuel. Poultry fat, used motor oil, and spent cooking oil all qualify under this definition, more so than crops grown for the express purpose of creating biodiesel or ethanol.
