Bad business to be in. Citrus has been declining annually to the point where a
lot of growers are bulldozing existing groves and turning them into grazing
land for cattle, the only other real agricultural business we have on a large
scale. Pretty much everything south of Orlando to the Everglades is cattle
grazing land.

When you get down into south Florida around Homestead there are large row crop
operations and sugar. Central Florida is pretty much a big pasture and nothing
else. And not a very god one at that.

Still do to protect all kinds of fruit at vulnerable times and temps.

Sprinkling plants will protect them from hard freezes.

The purpose of the smudge pots is to keep the air circulating, so the
cold air does not settle on the ground.

Burning old tires make good smudge, but they don't last real long. You
have to stay up adding fresh tires to each pile, unless you have big
piles of tires.

Usually it happens in the twenties.

After the last frost in the spring, I wait until April here, cut off all
the fronds and that seems to wake up the palm and inspire it to grow a
bunch of new fronds from the top. Happens very quickly.

Sago, to be pedantic.

Mine got a little nipped but it is close to the house so that might have
kept it a bit warmer.  It's maybe 4ft diameter.  It did get down into
the high 20s at the vast estate, and there was ice and snow and frozen
stuff on it.  Driving around I have a seen a lot that totally brown and
dead looking, some very big ones too, but I think they might come back
when  it warms up.

BTW they are deadly to dogs, who, for some reasons known only to dogs,
might eat on them.  So best not to have them planted in the dog pen areas.
