full blast on the cast with no effect. Then I got the plug red hot
and let
it cool. That and with the 6 foot cheater and beating with the BFH
and 15
chisel finally broke it loose. The object of heating in this case is
to

break loose the corrosion bond.

I was after the thermal expansion effect, and I think I may even have
tried an ice cube in the center hole of the plug after heating. I
had to get the wrench on the plug _immediately_ after pulling off the
torch in order to get it to budge.

get

the weird colored stuff (red or orange?) which should be used in Der

Dealer (or equivalent) item, or Zerex G-05 from NAPA/McParts, if you
can find it.

I still recommend you install the real block heater. Are you _sure_
this car doesn't already have the heater installed? That's the hardest
part. If it's there but merely burnt out, it's fairly easy to replace.
If there's a big nut sticking out the side of the block in front(-ish)
of the starter, you already have it. If it's a 3/4 allen socket, you
don't.

Be prepared to cut the old block plug out with a big hammer and a big
chisel (emphasis on BIG) or acetylene torch.

The last one i took out would not budge with a 6 ft cheater or a 15 chisel
and 6 lb hammer. I heated it red hot with the torch, then applied both the
cheater and the chisel at the same time before it broke loose. I am
reluctant to cut the plug out with a torch for fear of messing up the threads.

a block heater does not go in the radiator hose, it goes in the side of

real block heater.

OK, it is time for me to install a block heater in the lower radiator

This means I must drain and replace the anti-freeze. The stuff that is

Did you heat the plug, or the area _around_ the plug? The latter is
what I did, trying to keep the plug relatively cold. I wanted the
circumferential expansion of the hole, but not the plug. It
worked, btw, but was a bugger to get out. Not too bad with the
right tools and enough of the impedimentia removed.

I think i tried both ways. The block won't heat red hot because the cast
transfers heat too well.

I never got mine near that hot, I'm sure. Didn't really want to,
either!

With C2H2O2, though, it probably could have done. Once the water was
out of it enough.
