The DSL is the Telco's. Whether they provide ISP services (your actual
connection to the Internet) or someone else does (as we have), the analog
DSL signal is converted to digital at your nearby DSLAM. The digital bits
then go to the Telco's central office and are routed to your ISP.

The cable companies are all the time trying different codecs to allow for
reasonable picture quality while reducing data rate. H.264 has changed the
whole game for everybody on that front.
Thing is if your TV doesn't support the codec the cable provider is using
you'll get no picture.

I'm with you about not having more boxes et-al. I fix it by not watching TV.

My argument is that I already have a digital receiver in my TV. Why should I
need to use Comcast's box, yet another device to find space for, yet another
remote to keep track of. The paranoid in me thinks it's so they can track what
I'm watching.

I loathe TV, but will watch something mindless like Family Guy to put me to

If it were up to me I would stick with terrestrial stations and leave it at

Yeah that was my argument for years. But lately we had more problems with the

My brother, bless his heart, is a cable TV Luddite.

Comcast has done nothing but make him crazy since they took over the city-owned
cable system some years ago.

It seems like every time I speak with him Comcast has done something to hose up

He would go with a dish in a heartbeat, but his house is literally surrounded

I've got a little black book with my poems in
Got a bag with toothbrush and a comb in
When I'm a good dog they sometimes throw me a bone in
I got elastic bands keeping my shoes on
Got those swollen hand blues
I've got 13 channels of sh*t on the T.V. to choose from
I've got electric light
And I've got second sight
I've got amazing powers of observation
And that is how I know
When I try to get through
On the telephone to you
There'll be nobody home

I've got the obligatory Hendrix Perm
And the inevitable pinhole burns
All down the front of my favourite satin shirt
I've got nicotine stains on my fingers
I've got a silver spoon on a chain
Got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains
I've got wild staring eyes
And I've got a strong urge to fly
But I've got nowhere to fly to
Ooh Babe when I pick up the phone
There's still nobody home

I've got a pair of Gohills boots
And I've got fading roots...

Comcast is going to the Digital receivers to stifle Cable Theft.
The signal from them is going to be encrypted so you have to have a box
to receive.
Also makes it easier to cut off customers that don't pay the bills, No
longer have to send
a tech to climb the pole to disconnect just have the puter cut your
signal off.

Here, ATT offers DSL without a voice service requirement. I wish it were
available in my neighborhood. Obviously you do still need their copper pair
wire to your house.

My argument is that I already have a digital receiver in my TV. Why should I
need to use Comcast's box, yet another device to find space for, yet another
remote to keep track of. The paranoid in me thinks it's so they can track what
I'm watching.

Fairly good. All utilities in my neighborhood are underground.

Yeah that was my argument for years. But lately we had more problems with the
ATT landline than we did with Comcast or Verizon (cell). I don't think the
telco commitment to uptime is what it used to be.

I looked up the Refuge and found

Located in the Chihuahuan desert 20 miles north of Socorro, New Mexico,
the land that is now Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge has a fascinating

Sevilleta NWR is managed primarily as a research area, and is closed to
most recreational uses. However, limited waterfowl and dove hunting is
available, and special tours including environmental education programs
for students, may be arranged by contacting the refuge at 505/864-4021 or

maintenance, scientific, visitor services, and clerical projects. A
trailer may be available; please contact the Refuge for more information.

Sounds like an interesting place. Dry, but interesting.

I got the kind that has to be connected to a PC via the USB port (Mac or
Windows only, no Linux support), and uses the computer's network connection.

They do have a more expensive "Plus" version that is a stand-alone model; no PC
required. It connects directly to a free port on your router. If you're
looking at that version, there is at least one alternative, NetTalk. I don't
know how they compare.

Basically you buy the device, it comes with the first year of service pre-paid,
you get assigned a phone number in your local area code (or any that you
chose). You register your name and address with their E-911 service (I guess
that's optional, but probably a good idea). You connect a regular household
telephone to the device, and use it as normal. I think you can also use PC
speakers/mic or a headset if you want.

I have noticed that it takes a second or two after lifting the handset before
you get a dial tone, but that's tolerable for me. Incoming calls ring the
phone as normal.

A couple of caveats: you have to leave your PC powered on and logged in; the
Magic Jack software needs to be running. When the phone is in use, a window
pops open on the PC, which displays the caller ID info (this doesn't seem to
get passed to the phone though). The window also contains advertising.

I really did no research before I bought this. I had canceled my home landline
a few months ago, thinking I could get by with just cell service. However
reception at my house is marginal, and has gotten worse in the summer (tree
leaves blocking the signal?). So I saw this on sale at Best Buy and thought
what the heck, I'll give it a try. So far so good.
