Re: [MBZ] This worth anywhere near the listed price?
Hard to say without having a good look at it, if as described 6k is not far off the mark, the 108/9s are going up in price lately, as they have the classic Merc look and are still very usable as a daily driver. It's a V8 with steel suspension, so no carbies or air suspension to spend up on. Air suspension is universally regarded as being superior to steel springs but can cost a bit to fix. So yeah if you are wanting a 108 without breaking the bank and being afraid to drive it, this would be it. I really don't think you would find a much cheaper V8 108 than this, unless it's a total junk pile. Hendrik who has a secret lust for V8 108/9s On 09/09/14 08:55, Kaleb C. Sure it is... if its really 99% rust free. I just sold this: http://images.jaimekop.com/2014_08_09_280SE/ for much more, and there was nearly a bidding war on the car. And I didn't even list it for sale yet. W108s are hot, and they're going to rise. Finally. But you're really missing the boat with the V8s. I've owned a few of both and always thought the V8 was too heavy and bloated, and had the sleepy 3 speed automatic. 6 cylinder cars are the best. I strongly prefer the early W108s (1966-67) as well due to their higher interior qualities without any of that safety nonsense added in 1968. I like the fluid coupling transmissions more too, but most people probably don't agree. Jaime On Mon, Sep 8, 2014 at 7:17 PM, Kaleb C. Yeah but you got to compare it to the 3.5 and 2.8, neither of which are super efficient. You also got to compare it to other cars of that era, none of which got good mileage, apart from some of the Diesel ones but even they are crap when compared to modern electronic Diesels. A 108/9 with a modern Diesel engine would be cool or even convert it to a hybrid. There is a fella on the OzBenz forum who is toying with the idea of converting a CLK to hybrid, the upshot is pretty much that it will never pay for itself. It was quite common to drop a 615 in these in Germany -- lowered the tax rate and gave decent performance with much better milage. It is better than a comparable Cadillac or Oldsmobile -- in that era they got six mpg, as low as 4 if you drove hard. Huge honking things that rolled like whales. I wish my was restorable, and I had the $$, they are a blast to drive, and if you set them a bit lean, aren't so horrible on milage you can drive them on trips.
