Re: [MBZ] Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I totally agree, however, there are some things you simply can’t escape whether
the TV is current or a year old.

Connectivity - Don’t. It adds little in the way of functionality, compromises
your privacy, and the manufacturer’s applications that are on the TV are
generally crap. An Amazon Firestick as Karl mentioned previously is a far
better option for getting content along with a cable box if you’re going that
direction.

Picture quality - while the UHD TVs have excellent picture quality, the OLED
TVs have breathtaking picture quality. There’s truly a difference between the
two. This may or may not matter to you, but definitely compare them. While it
wouldn’t and didn’t matter to me (I didn’t let anyone watch the demo TV in the
store, I picked it out and brought it home) I can see where it might to some
viewers. There really is a striking difference in picture quality between the
two technologies. However, if it’s double the cost it might not make fiscal
sense to some as it didn’t to me.

As with most consumer tech items, the best values are usually found with
the stuff that's one or two years behind the leading edge.

That's how I buy phones, computers, etc. I haven't bought a TV in years
and if it weren't for the rest of the family I probably would not own
one, but the same principle applies.

Everything does that. Facebook, amazon and google all listen in if you give
them permission to use the microphone. I use google voice to dial my phone
in the car and sometimes catch it listening to other things. I have
blacklisted a bunch of google ad sites at home so it probably doesnt track
me there as much as it woukd like.

Keeping the phone on super power saver is a good option. Shuts it all down.

I kinda like the Firestick though last night it creeped me out. My daughter and
I went out to drop off recycling and I was telling her that a friend had
suggested to watch Homeland. So we get home, the girl puts on the TV and
firestick to watch something and the suggestion that popped up was Homeland. My
ifōn must have been listening then reporting to Amazon.

It is all heading toward FireStick for us. We are not Apple people. Maybe
Roku or similar product as I agree with Dan that Amazon seems to charge
extra for many things. It is possible to do Netflix through the Firestick
and many other services.

My plan is an LS100 or LS500 epson projector, firestick in the Denon
receiver which has ethernet and then hdmi out to the projector. I think we
have space for a 100 inch image and a bunch of speakers in the ceiling with
subwoofers in the cabinet so it should be nicer than the current ipad setup.

They do, but you can often get them on demand, that is, when you want to watch
them, or if not, you can DVR them in advance to watch later. YouTube TV has a
very good search interface that allows you to search for stuff you like and set
it up to record future shows or series.

Look at their web site for details.

At the end of the hour, count up the number of marks you have recorded.. it

For the truly industrious, use a stop watch and time the advert time vs

Remember, you are paying for them, same as "show time".

So shows on the history channel for example don’t play live like they do on

The annoying thing about Amazon is finding things. I'll search around and not
see something and then a few days later it'll recommend the very thing I was
searching for. They have a really good selection of the old B&W shows, we

Theres still loads of racism around but its much quieter. I'm surprised when
somebody my age rolls out a stupid racist comment and while they'll do it in a
group of white folks I'd bet good money they wouldn't if there was a black guy
around.
I'm not very tolerant of those attitudes, nor sexism. Once in awhile my parents
will talk about "those lazy blacks." I point to the lazy whites that live
across the street from me...

Yes, if he gets a streaming service, it most likely will have DVR or on demand
capabilities built into it. I don’t know about his area, but with YouTube TV we
get the local network affiliates, I believe.

Old tv series (you had mentioned the Adams Family) often show up on Amazon
Prime video. I've got Amazon Prime anyway and we watch a lot of stuff on there.
Other than YouTube its my only "TV". I've got a 32" television hooked to my Mac
Pro via HDMI.
"Long Way Round" and "Long Way Down" are both on there, excellent shows.

From the research I did I found that nearly all of the streaming services have
DVR capabilities built in for free. We use YouTube TV, which is $56/month, and
it has scheduling and DVR functions as a part of the deal. Unlimited storage,
so you can set schedules for stuff you might not even decide to watch and it
will sit there indefinitely. The wife has recorded some movies on it I might
watch, but to be honest, I never look at it.

We’re very pleased with it compared to cable. The wife’s the TV watcher and
she’s happy, so that’s really all that matters.

Again, Pluto TV has a lot of content and much of it is organized into channels,
so it’s easy to pick out the stuff you want to watch. If you’re into any old TV
series, they’re probably on it somewhere.

With internet access, YouTube TV and a small subscription I pay ($5/month) for
over the air scheduling for my over the air DVR we pay less than $120/month for
everything. I’m pretty happy with that compared to the $225+ we were paying for
cable TV.

2020-04-13 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
 Edited shorter.

The "shooting ratio" is the amount of stuff shot divided by the amount of stuff
that actually makes it into the program. Back in the days of film a 10:1
shooting ratio was the high side of acceptable. Today since the "footage" is
much cheaper 20:1 is pretty common. Television is usually tighter because the
shooting schedule is shorter.

2020-04-13 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Yup, commercial rates haven't risen anywhere near the rate of inflation, the
money for those shows has to come from somewhere.
I know, "I paid for cable" great, that pays the delivery service, it doesn't
pay the network, or the local station. It doesn't pay for the news or the
weather, that all gets paid for from ad revenue.
We've all got to pay somewhere or the stuff won't get made. I go through this a
lot on the Youtube subreddit, people don't understand that ads pay for the
things on the internet that are "free".

About 15 years ago I had about 95% of M*A*S*H recorded off the air on VHS.
Somewhere in the middle of doing that, I realized the plot was there but a
lot of the gags were missing. Like one episode where somebody put soot in
the eyecups of Col Potter's binoculars and turned him into a racoon. I'm
watching the ending credits, see Potter and O'Reilly in the jeep with
Potter's black eyes, and realized that scene didn't exist in the show I'd
recorded, but I remembered it from the first time I saw it in the 1970s.

Then my parents started giving me M*A*S*H DVDs for presents, and I noticed
my tapes were 22+ minutes long while the DVDs were 25+ minutes. So in 30
years, commercials had increased from about 5 1/2 minutes to 8 1/2
minutes.

Three decades back was more a tipping point than a Golden, or Silver Age.

I think is was a better place to be a kid, but on a steep downward trend. You
could still play outside with school friends without being molested by cops and
nosy nanny neighbors. Walk or ride a bike to school and eat a PB&J without
exploding or being castigated into submission. You could be in band and
expect to maybe have a chance at playing an instrument live, with a real live
natural vocalist, not some bumpy-thumpy bass laden skritchy-skratchy
compu-squeek backing to auto tune lyrics that approach the dissonance of mating
cicadas.

For people born after 1990, the situation was far worse, as the nannies came
out in force. You had to have a Day Planner for your Toddler Playdates. White
Guilt was creeping like a slime mold mated to kudzu, making the incipient
plague of Political Correctness that was born in the 80’s, into a puritanical
virtue. There had to be a PROGRAM and Bodyguard on station for you to learn a
skill, be it reading, bike riding, heaven forbid you climb a tree, let alone
the playground jungle gym (now whitewashed into Big Toy, to avoid harming non
whites)

Cars were just beginning to catch the computer complication, but were very
approachable by any near imbecile who knew the proper end of a wrench or other
basic hand tool. Much the same skill set as had held their fathers and
grandfathers in good stead when wrestling recalcitrant rides.

Medical care was becoming enamored of the Monty Python “Machine That Goes
Ping”, but still provided reasonable access to care at a price that did not
bankrupt a person. You could always go all out for Heroic Measures, but had
minimal expectation that they would actually have a positive impact. If you
had HIV, you were dead, so live your life as best you could, the death sentence
was laid, just no sure date given.

What I really miss the most is actually dealing with a living human, face to
face, to conduct your business or other social situation. No staring at a
screen for hour on end, unless you had a beer in hand and were watching the
same set of TV shows the rest of the nation was. Maybe there was a bit more
programming available with UPN and CW in your market, otherwise it was the big
three and PBS, maybe a few UHF stations. The really hooked in had CABLE with
their MTV.

Set up a very short DHCP lease time and give the portables a bogus

end up disconnecting their devices from the internet but it is harder now

Anyway not much use for TV. We did watch the Fastest Indian the other night
on an ipad, which the 9yo thought was a great film. It was available free

I had Prime for a couple of years, and canceled it last time they raised
the renewal fee. I never ordered enough to offset the cost with the free
shipping, and the other services I just never used. I tried the video
service a couple of times but didn't find it compelling and navigating

I actually never watch TV anymore. I'd watch baseball or hockey, but

I flew our 63 year old Cessna last weekend, need to do it again as soon as
the T-storms leave the area. While it doesn't have tube radios anymore, and
does have the latest ADS-B in/out, it still has steam gauges, manual flaps,
etc. "They don't make them like they used to" (the newer ones are faster,
carry more load, and are more expensive to maintain).

Despite our 500+ channels, we end up watching reruns of The Nanny and
Forensic Files most of the time, on free low HD cable.

On my own, it's Restoration Garage (love those Canadians!) or Chasing
Classic Cars.

Re: [MBZ] Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

With internet access, YouTube TV and a small subscription I pay ($5/month) for
over the air scheduling for my over the air DVR we pay less than $120/month for
everything. I’m pretty happy with that compared to the $225+ we were paying for
cable TV.

So in 30
years, commercials had increased from about 5 1/2 minutes to 8 1/2
minutes.

A little challenge for those of you who pay for TV packages.
Clock yourself for 1 hr of TV watching, any channel or channels you choose.
During that hour, every time an advertisement comes on, make a mark on a
note pad. Since adverts usually run back to back, count each advertiser as
a separate advertisement.
At the end of the hour, count up the number of marks you have recorded.. it
will amaze you.

For the truly industrious, use a stop watch and time the advert time vs
"show time", and add that up with the hash marks... ie number and total
time.
Remember, you are paying for them, same as "show time".

I did exactly this, and canceled cable... bought a broadcast antenna [the
one you see where some guy is on his boat in gulf of Mexico] for $20 and
never looked back... Life is better, for me, anyway. The cable company
still gets a few $$ each month for internet connection, and about $200 less
for no TV...

Re: [MBZ] Was the world really a better place 30 years ago?

2020-04-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We cut the cord last year and haven’t looked back. So much of the cable channel
packages are cruft.

I don’t watch TV, other than right before bed when I’ll doze off to something
I’ve recorded, like Family Guy or Perry Mason. On occasion there are some
mainstream shows I’ll stop and watch. One the wife discovered recently is
Damien Lewis’ “Spy Wars” and is pretty engaging. When we had the History
Channel variants I would watch documentaries on WWII subject matter
occasionally, too.

Otherwise, the TV would die from lack of use if it relied on me.

There are so many "extra" channels thatare forced upon us merely because

I washed my 36yo Mercedes diesel yesterday and took it out for a spin and added
a few miles to its 400k. Made me think there are still some good things in
life, and “old” technology still has a place. It made me happy. I need to drive
it more. And tighten up the steering box. But I love that car.

I think we are looking through the wrong end of the telescope.
The question that really needs an answer is not "Were things better 30
years ago?" rather.. the question that needs answered is:
"Is life truly better because of all the technology changes, the social
changes, the automotive changes, the work place changes, and the family
life changes that we presently have?"

Lol, I said nearly thirty years ago that desktop publishing (and by extension,
social media now) would be the end of civilization. Any idiot can publish
things now -- back when it cost a couple hundred thousand dollars to get
something in print, the trash got filtered out. If someone wanted to crank out
their screed on a mimeograph, everyone knew it was probably junk.

Now it's hard to tell the difference, and there is NO filter on anything. We
are drowning in garbage.

The good thing is that this has happened before, multiple times, and once
people figure out they are being fed garbage they tend to wise up a little.

After all, we had rampant yellow journalism around the turn of the last
century, and now newspapers are considered reliable sources. It's just gonna
take a while with social media -- we will get there, but not soon.

Me, I'm about done with the noise. Had to upgrade to a "smart" phone because
Verizon is planning to end support for 3G/1x, and my old phone was getting
unreliable (and had trouble with "smart" text). I hate it. Endless "upgrades"
for junk I don't use and will never use, hard to type on (my thumbs are bigger
than the chicklet sized letters on the keypad), stupid touch screen is never
working right, and the damned buttons are almost impossible to use without
accidentally pushing the wrong one.

To say nothing of the ridiculous GLASS front and back and the super fragile
OLED display that fails when you drop the phone (because the connections come
apart in the wiring).
