As far as I know, all the 917 turbo short blocks were the same with the
exception of something on the flywheel of the 85 model. You could probably
verify this using the online parts site.

What physical difference is there between the sedan short block [crank,
rods, pistons, block, cam chain drive/Injection pump drive] and the TD
short block ?

Other than the drive for leveling pump on the head aren't the bottom end
of the engines the same? Assuming the head from your thrown rod engine can
be returned to service, seems to me, using the short block [lower end] from
a sedan version would widen the field quite a lot to find a serviceable
engine.

The centering bore in the end of the crankshaft is larger in the '85 to
match the larger centering nub in the torque converter, IIRC.

Is there a reason you are limiting your search to '84 and '85?
The S123 with a turbo first showed up in '81.

None. If they are both turbo. The difference is the wagon
always has the SLS pump drive. The sedan almost always does not.

Assuming the head from your thrown rod engine can be returned

That's how I would go about it. But then I do my my own
wrenching so the only mechanic I have to satisfy is myself.
