Re: [MBZ] how many pads?
That sounds analogous to the 111 system, and I think up to the 123 at least, they were all interchangeable. Pretty much reduces Woger's argument to nothing. I'm not sure why they used a red and blue in the spring designation, but blue springs were usually stiffer or stronger than red, and took a thinner spring pad. When ordering a set of springs, one either took a chance they'd get a matching set, or order three and return whatever one didn't match. The red or blue paint mark was the lower mark one or two coils up from the bottom. The colors in the middle of the spring were not relevant. Factory springs for at least the U.S. bound '87 300D were 124 321 23 04. These were discontinued at some point. Spring pads had ribs on them usually 2, 3, or 4 so one could visually tell without knowing part numbers to match them. The more ribs, the thicker the spring pad. Don't ask me how I know all of this! Depending on the serial number range, I count up to 30 front spring pad part numbers for the 124, 15 red and 15 blue (whatever that means). For a 124.133 300D, 15 of them are applicable. 15 front springs total; nine possible for a 300D. (Wait, you said rear - figures are a little lower back there.) Re: [MBZ] how many pads?
For the 111, there are an unbelievable number of possible combinations. for Std, HD and Taxi service, and several choices for top, and several choices for bottom, and several choices for springs and shocks, according to accessories, region of the world for delivery, transmission, and type of service, and maybe more. I have no reason to believe there are fewer choices for cars made 20 years later to tune the suspension to the application. DB built cars for all over the world, at that time, and not just for the NA market. For springs alone, there are three different color markings, and 1, 2 or 3 stripes of each color. You do the math. That is a whole lot of choices. If my math is correct, there are up to 27 choices for springs alone. (not all would apply to the 111 chassis application) I put taxi springs and new pads in a 220Sb years ago, and the hardest part was trying to figure out what top and bottom pads to get because the markings on the old ones were long gone. What I ended up with was a car that stood up nicely, and rode a tad higher than the other 111s that were around at the time (worn) It had a more sporty handling, but the ride was still good. So, Woger, look it up. It is all in the paper manual called Passenger cars from 1959 MB uses a formula to determine pad thickness. That formula depends on what options the car has (e.g.. Manual transmission or auto; no AC or AC; sunroof yes or no; etc)... Piffle. Tell me how many different rear spring pads there are or were for the model in question.
