Re: [MBZ] rebuild vs. engine swap??

2007-03-29 Thread Steve MacSween
Actually, it isn't quite that simple anyway, the fly down and drive back
part. To bring it into Canada, you have to clear U.S. Customs on exit and
they require the original title and two copies be placed on file with them
72 hours before you cross.

Then you have the issues of whose registration (tags) and insurance you
drive on, if you are lucky your insurance company may issue a 'rider' on the
policy to allow you to drive the car without valid Ontario plates (read:
inspection), some do and some don't. Some states will issue a temp permit to
an out-of-state purchaser, some don't, some only if you buy from a dealer,
and so on.

Cross-border trucking is pricey, the company I now use more or less charges
$1200 to $1800 US to bring cars into Canada, but they are dead reliable and
efficient.

Plus, no offense to Donald, but then when all is said and done you never,
EVER, really know what you are getting. BTDT five times and counting:

- 1960 220s from Los Angeles, vendor never said the seats were three
different colors (I got this way back when photography on eBay was a bonus,
not the norm), shipper broke the WHITE bone steering wheel and one taillight
(note to old list members, shipper was a friend of Chip Lamb)
- 1982 Volvo wagon with a Ford V8 conversion installed, from Arizona
- 1983 300sd, ex-Kaleb, totalled by a red-light runner 5 wks after I got it
- 1982 240d from Texas, vendor 'forgot' to mention the five major dings in
the roof, plus the grille was bashed in after auction
- 1982 300sd from California desert, vendor said paint was 'tired', I
assumed he meant sun-faded (I've buffed out other sun belt cars) -- my bad
-- turns out it's a cheapo repaint that's covered all over in scratches that
are jussst too deep for buffing so it goes

Truth is, I'm a little lazy. That's one reason I may seem not too put off
it the price is a little higher than what some think it's worth for such
high mileage. (maybe I'm the sucker born every minute. hee hee). But time
is worth something. So I fly down somewhere, take a few days driving back,
all the hassle with the paperworkYou see, the extra $1500 to have the
guy drive it to my house is worth it. If we were talking 10-20G difference,
maybe, but this is a pretty cheap car to start with, and I can touch it
before I pay. :-) Your car does sound very nice tough.

Question is, the car has high mileage (320,000 KMS) but runs very well.
It will receive very light use, about 3000-4000 KMS per year, but as the
trans and engine become wore, do you suggest rebuilding, or just finding
a lower mileage used engine and swapping it out. The body and interior
is very good, with almost zero rust.

Hey Ed, you should just buy a good car that doesn't have any problems.
I happen to have a very nice 1990 300SEL. That would not cost you much
more than this car. It doesn't need anything and I have TONS of service
records. You drive it back to Canada from Kansas or have it shipped.

Re: [MBZ] rebuild vs. engine swap??

2007-03-28 Thread E M

Thanks Steve,

I'll stop by the dealer tomorrow and have a chat. I have read the a/c on
these cars can be a problem, so want to make sure it's just a hose or
something, and not a $$ bigger part. I probably take it either way, but
adjust the price accordingly. I believe it was always dealer maintained,
and the book is stamped until they ran out of room. I'm getting a little
more exciting than I though I would about have a benz in the family again.
It's been a loong time. Last one was a new 450 SEL. :-)

Thanks again.

Most important point is to have the car checked over. This is NOT the time
to go by your gut.

I did not see any response to your request for a good indie (maybe I
missed
it), but if I were you I would pay the bit extra and take it to one of the
Star Motors shops. Call the service manager and have a chat about it.

You are probably going to have to do top-end work before anything else,
but
if the checkover does not point out any major issues then I would guess
you
are good to go for a while yet.

Mileage is relative to maintenance, as long as a 320k car has had regular
scheduled work I would not worry too much about it. If the car has been
'stripped' of its log books then caveat emptor unless they find at the
dealer that it was maintained at a Benz dealer (hence in the system).
