Yup, those sound like vacuum issues.

He does not have a vacuum gauge. He is going to find an adjustable
wrench to remove the hose from the brake booster and see if it's booster
related or pump related. Are there any of you IA folks that might be
 able to assist?

He needs to be careful to not break the (now brittle) taps off the hose
from the brake booster to the pump. Then he for sure won't be able to shut
the car off normally.

(blah, I just had a thought and I'm having him try shutting off the car

Depends. Does pressing on the brake pedal close off the line to the vacuum
pump? I think it does not and stepping on the brake pedal would make
stopping the engine even harder. You can have him try it and see what
happens. It would be nice to know if it really does shut off normally.

He thinks the car will make it south without repairs, if he drives
slower and keeps long following distances. TIA all.

I think that's what I would do. He seems to have few tools and certainly
doesn't have a replacement part for whatever's broken. You can stop the
car by STANDING on the brake pedal, turn it off by pressing the lever on
the injection pump, and lock it by manually pushing all the buttons down.

How 'bout disconnecting the vac tubes to all parts systems except the brake
booster. May be leaking somewhere so as to not leave enough vac power for
brake booster. If he can get brakes to work better, he'll at least have the

'can shut off engine with lever under hood; lock doors manually, etc.

Easier no tools test is to pull and plug the vacuum hose from the shutoff valve
to see if thats causing his stiff brakes.

BTW the brakes should be stiff with this happening, that is they should require
more force. Power brakes are overrated! ;)

If there is motor oil on the fitting on the brake booster (or on any other

Subject: [MBZ] repair help north IA '85 300TD

My dad is on his way south from MN and is in Kiesper, IA and is having
vacuum issues. He has weak brakes, the car takes a long time to shut
off, and the door locks don't move very quickly. He does not have a
vacuum gauge. He is going to find an adjustable wrench to remove the
hose from the brake booster and see if it's booster related or pump
related. Are there any of you IA folks that might be able to assist?
He thinks the car will make it south without repairs, if he drives
slower and keeps long following distances. TIA all.

(blah, I just had a thought and I'm having him try shutting off the car
with his foot on the brake. Would this point at the booster, or not?
i.e. if the car shuts off like normal, the booster is at fault)

Re: [MBZ] repair help north IA '85 300TD

2009-04-26 Thread Luther
This shouldn't cause the brakes to be stiff/no boost while driving?
There isn't any vacuum to the shutoff valve when rolling down the road.

Pushing the brakes down did not shut the car off. He's going to try and
find a wrench to remove the vacuum line at the booster and see if it's
the pump or booster. If not, he's going to take it slow and try to
avoid rush hour Thanks for the help.

Easier no tools test is to pull and plug the vacuum hose from the shutoff valve
to see if thats causing his stiff brakes.

BTW the brakes should be stiff with this happening, that is they should require
more force. Power brakes are overrated! ;)
