Re: [MBZ] self curing head on my SDL
Kaleb, If you want to know you'll have to pull the head. I've had one with a cracked head and one wih a blown head gasket and one with both. The only that had the most problematic coolant temp problem was the blown head gasket. The one that drove the best was the one with both a blown head gasket and cracked head. Coolant stayed at the right temperature, idle oil psi was above 2 bar even after foot the floor going 90 MPH up 6% grade for miles (to see what should could do). Coolant was nasty mix of green and black oil, but it flowed like coolant, not a Steak 'n Shake milkshake. Brian On 8/14/05, Marshall Booth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Kaleb C. Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: so maybe the head is not cracked and i can just get away with the gasket? There is NO 100% conclusive test that can reliably separate a bad head gasket from a cracked or warped head without pulling the head (and even then there are sometimes times when it's NOT clear). Even passing a head pressure test does NOT guaranty the head is NOT cracked and the engine manual warns of that. Every since, there is NO pressure in the system the next morning and the coolant as not dropped a bit. WTF? This beats all I ever saw. In the early stages, bad head gaskets AND bad heads often ONLY show any symptoms after they have been driven at least half an hours at operating temperature! That's one of the characteristics that makes diagnosing a bad head gasket or cracked head so much fun (hard to keep temps at optimal while pulling the glow plugs of an OM60x engine to check compression hot - cold tests usually reveal NOTHING - especially in the early stages). My ex wife had a VW diesel rabbit that required 5 compression tests over a year to establish there was a bad head gasket (t hat was FINALLY repaired under warranty). I've a head that acted up only two or three times over a year long period (only after driving for MORE that a half hour in HOT weather) before it started to show leaks more routinely. That was a failed head gasket. That's quite common with bad gaskets OR warped heads (especially on OM60x engines and their aluminum heads that could warp as well as crack). You MAY have a cracked head, a warped head or a failed head gasket. Your symptoms actually sound MOST like a warped head (they CAN be straightened by someone that has a LOT of experience straightening aluminum heads I'm told - but I personally know of only ONE such success story and he sold the car a few months later so don't know how long the "fix" endured). Are you SURE that the pressure cap and overflow line and tank are working as they should? Marshall -- Kaleb C. Does not smoke, does not run hot unless ran low on coolant of course, after sitting overnight has pressure in system still, also have to add coolant everyday or every other day. Sometimes up to 1/2 gal or more. No leaks, no coolant in oil, no oil in coolant. Anyways, the other day wife calls and says car is getting hot, getting up close to line right before 120, well, getting close to everheating. Anyways, she pulls in to somebodys house she knows I guess and they let it cool off a while, then add coolant(evil green stuff). That has been like 3 or 4 days ago.
