Re: [MBZ] stuck piston ring

Motor uses 1 qt of M1 15w50/100miles. Before I have valve stem seals
done I
thought I'd try this. This is a V12 gas motor. Runs strong with ALL
kinds of

power. Just burns/uses oil and has a noise in there.

Dunno about the noise, but our 450 SL made clouds of oil smoke, and
the problem was only the stem seals on #2. Which I did myself in the
driveway in about an hour. Never did replace the other seals. (After
six+ years it still doesn't use oil or foul plugs anymore.)

Find someone with a borescope to check the cylinder wall through the
spark plug hole -- a stuck ring on this engine can mean a rebuild job
if the cylinder wall is scored.

If the cylinder wall is OK, I would add a small amount of ATF to that
cylinder only and let it soak a couple days. Then rotate the engine to
clear it (spark plug out) and attempt a restart.

The main problem with stuck rings is that they then scrape the cylinder
walls badly, and that cannot be fixed by freeing up the rings again.
