[MBZ] HA!
Left work today and found that my '78 240D wouldn't start. It'd crank but wouldn't even pop. I looked around and found an irritating oil cooler leak which is all the more annoying because I just replaced the lines but couldn't find anything serious until I finally spotted the lead to the glow plug relay lying on the exhaust... I should explain that this car has at some point in the past been denuded of its proper preglow system. In its place somebody installed a remote starter solenoid which is triggered by a button in the dash. I have the pieces to restore it but rather like this unique system, until today. The wire on the exhaust had melted and obviously shorted out. I found that the fuse LOOKED fine but when I pulled a screw it came apart. Using the washer on the screw I was able to jumper to the remains of the fuse and get back on the road. Frustratingly my Car Quest couldn't come up with a replacement and I ordered from Rusty earlier today. I've send him a note to add fuses if he hasn't already sent out the order. Fortunately I do have a spare. Anyway: A. I was pleased to be able to get my car running again with just a screwdriver and some luck. 2. I think this incident illustrates a failure with my system. I push the button, the relay clicks, the light comes on but no power goes to the plugs. The light is triggered by the same electricity as the relay. I should (I think) move the light to the output side of the relay thus if the relay is not powered neither is the light. Don't restore it. The original system was with series plugs and you really want parallel glow plugs. Trust me. My favorite glow system is on the car that has a button on the dash. It's a '78 that I put the special series-size-but-parallel-value glow plugs into and wired a button to a big relay under the hood. It's so good I keep threatening to change my other cars to be the same way, but I haven't yet. The wire on the exhaust had melted and obviously shorted out. Put a spare of each fuel filter, a couple spare glow plugs, two of each fuse, and a tail and signal lamp in some sort of box in the trunk. Never depend on a FLAPS for such easy to transport essential spares. Fortunately I do have a spare. But not in the car? 2. I think this incident illustrates a failure with my system. I should (I think) move the light to the output side of the relay thus if the relay is not powered neither is the light. I agree. The light should indicate the glow plugs are getting power. You have an audible indication the relay coil is getting power so having a light there is not especially useful. The electric power and telephone companies use them to catch thieves trying to steal their property for scrap metal. You don't want to mess with any such camera, whether on public or private land. Waiting to be convinced. :) Well, that's not all that _I_ carry. But I figure that to be the short list of spare to keep on hand. Why the replacement lamps? Because I really like being sure others see what I'm doing. It is a safety item, and I to have those working. Always. Then if that wasn't enough, I once (years ago) I talked my way out of a probable ticket because I had a spare with me. The friendly officer was pretty worked up about the missing tail (or was it brake... too many years ago, I'm not remembering.) light. I said, Okay, I'll fix it right now and so while he was calling in my license I was changing the lamp. Would he really have written me a citation for a lamp out? It sure sounded like that's where it was going. But disaster was averted. *smiles* ... both fuse screws had come loose and were not holding the fuse against the wire. After tightening, the plugs were drawing properly. But... A) why were both screws loose? I'm sloppy but not that sloppy... i don't think. Do the heat cycles mean these things need extra torque? Metal can cold creep. Especially with thermal cycling. So while I don't think I have ever had any come loose, I can conceive that they could. 2) how can I make sure it doesn't happen again? Spring washer? Hmm. Are there supposed to be ones there already? short break while I run out with a flashlight [torch]) I just checked a few cars here. All have spring washers on those screws. The '78 might not. I used the original fuse holder, but put the bigger fuse in it when I wired in the big relay for the manual glow plugs. Re: [MBZ] A Diesel 124 That Gets 50 mpg
Wow! A real aircraft with a round engine, interesting wheel chock. We just got back from vacation, one of the destinations was the Evergreen Air Space museum in McMinnville OR. They had plenty of roundies there, as well as their main draw the Spruce Goose. That thing's big. We paid extra for the cockpit tour, and a photo with my son wearing Hughes' hat. Worth it. The museum is very nice, I thought. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Mistakes again WAS: Lost again?
Unlike current US savings bonds, which stop earning interest when they mature, war bonds continue earning interest until surrendered. So did my $50 Series E (?) that was bought for me as a baby in '60. I finally cashed it in to tide me over until I got my very first paycheck post-BS. I recall it was about $125 or so, the interest rate post-maturity was very small compared to the maturation rate. I couldn't think of a better way to have spent it! (I was pretty much broke except for that, and decided not to tap the parental units any more. What else was I going to use it on, anyway?) -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
