2020-04-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Not at all. I’ll let Jaime pile on, too. I love the Zeniths.

People give them a bad rap because they won’t take the time to set them up
properly. I’ve said this a ton of times - if you don’t follow the setup and
adjustment procedures to the letter, they won’t work well. I am of the belief
that too many people familiar with domestic carbs tried dinking with them and
got totally frustrated. You can’t just arbitrarily turn adjusting screws on
them without going through the whole procedure.

They’re not a QuadraJet or Holley double-pumper.

I had a 1970 250C with an M130 and dual Zeniths and that thing would pull
stumps.

Several references to cars that you could drive at "Lemans", but I think
they were referring to the concours d'lemons. I would CA classifies this
annual event as an ESSENTIAL business, at least as essential as a golf
course or liquor store. People would of course have to distance
themselves, as many of the entrants would likely be infected with some sort
of virus or bug.

Re: [MBZ] Nice 280E with issues and crack price PLEASE ONLY SEND RESPECTABLE OFFERS

2020-04-18 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The 280 had a Solex 4 barrel. According to my friend Hans, it's pretty much
impossible to make it work reliably, one of the reasons it was changed to D-Jet.

D-jet has it's own peculiarities, and these days I'm not sure it's possible to
find a working replacement manifold pressure sensor -- it's a mechanical
bellows variable inductor, quite a monster.

Anyway, the best thing to do is to swap it over to K-jet if you can find one
that fits -- that one is reliable.

The 280 also need regular tappet adjustments, and is usually rather noisy --
tappets rattle at he correct clearance.

If I were rich, it would be a fun car to fix up (especially if it's a W115),
but I'm not and I have two cars that need a ton of work or to go away already.

Re: [MBZ] Nice 280E with issues and crack price PLEASE ONLY SEND RESPECTABLE OFFERS

2020-04-18 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Lol, I'm sure most typical wrench turners who can't set up a Quadrajet properly
(and yes, it can be done, a least temporarily) and NEVER going to get a pair of
Zenith's set right.

Biggest problem is lack of maintenance on the heat riser flaps, with the result
that the base of the carbs warps and won't seal properly. Quadrajets are bad
about warped bases, but it's not heat in that case, it's a design defect.
Never seen a flat one unless someone had fixed the factory shape. Using a
chisel to hammer out the cap over the idle screw that doesn't need any
adjusting in most cases doesn't help. Instructions call for drilling a hole in
the sheet metal cap and using a self-tapping screw to pull it out, invariable
some hammer mechanic takes a cold chisel and breaks the housing. Naturally,
that puts a lump on the bottom and it won't seal any more

potential as body donors.

Re: [MBZ] MAKE REASONABLE OFFER NEED GONE

2020-04-18 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
This thread suggests the 06 E350 was the worst ever with the cam issues
related it seems to VVT.  If that is the issue then this is a scrap
price, MAYBE $500 as fixing it is an engine-out deal.  I suppose I could
drop a 500 in...

Re: [MBZ] MAKE REASONABLE OFFER NEED GONE

2020-04-18 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I sent him back a message saying it is basically a parts car, I wouldn't
want to insult him with a low offer (well, I wouldn't mind doing
that...) but that is kinda where it is given the issue.  I ran the VIN
and all these 06s pretty much were affected up to a certain engine
number, which this car falls into the range.   Looks like there was some
kind of class action on it that expired in 2015.

I sent him a note, no response yet, I'll let him sit on it the idea of a
LOBALL OFFER

the Timing belt needs to be tightened, coolant fluid container seems to

reading 10 miles wrong, lights in the back don't work or in the dash,
turn signals don't work in the dash or in front or back of car ( this

The guy is pretty cranky, I guess if his car is f'd I would be too.
Maybe I'll take a road trip up to Murder Beach tomorrow and take a look
at it, take the fancy computer and do a scan on it, see exactly what it
is throwing.  I'm not sure why cam issues would cause limp mode unless
the nannies are trying to keep it from imploding

--FT

what is the main symptom that indicates the balance shaft is bad?

Michael
The car is for sale if you want to do your own diagnosis. I have no clue.
OK thanks
Is it not running well, shaking, any particular issues?

Michael
Check engine came on. Car went into a limp mode and mechanic said
balance shaft is bad and just sell the car

ah. Did he put a scanner on it to see what the code indicated?
limp mode can be caused by a lot of issues, not all particularly severe,
a scan will indicate what the particular fault is

Michael
Read sellers description completely
Gotcha. You around tomorrow?

Michael
Yes. PM me when you would like to look at it

Very cool car needs more work than I can put in

ME: I have a bunch of old Benzes so working on them doesn't scare me,
I'd be interested to see what happened to this car, it does look nice,
hope the engine didn't get toasted from overheating -- that can blow out
the head gasket and warp the head. Fixable but kinda major work.

COVID Chronicles Update #8: Behind the Curtain

First we were told to listen to "the science". Then we were told to
"follow the science". Now we are being told, "Pay no attention to the
science behind the curtain." It may not be comfortable to ask elected
officials tough questions in the midst of a crisis but that is what we
are doing this week on The Public Square®.

If you are tired of being stuck at home and without a paycheck, this

[MBZ] OT - Patching PVC Sprinkler Line Hack

2020-04-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m asking because I literally have nothing to lose at this point…

I have a 1” schedule 20 PVC sprinkler line that is broken open at a joint at a
“T” fitting. Normally I would dig up a portion of the line, cut the offending
portion out and replace it with new pieces. But…

There are two 1” lines traveling together, one on top of the other. The bottom
line has the tee that is broken at the joint on one side, the portion of the
tee that is parallel to the other line if that makes sense. Both lines are
literally surrounded with tree roots, as they’re barely 6’ from an oak tree
that is probably 24” in diameter. The roots of the tree have distorted and
stressed the lines, causing the top line, which is the supply line from my
water meter to the sprinkler valves, to flatten out some. The bottom line is
under the same stress from the surrounding roots, but because the tee was
present the joint on one side of the tee failed.

See it here just after we had a good hard rain:
http://penoff.com/Photo_Dump.html#1

I can’t possibly cut the roots, as some are as large as 3”-4” surrounding these
lines. To do so would risk damaging the rather fragile lines not to mention I
would have to do some serious excavating to get enough space to get my chain
saw at them. There’s no way I could dig them up and “bypass” the tree, as
there’s really nowhere to go in close proximity that isn’t rootbound.

So here’s my Hail Mary:

Get some of the Flexseal Flex Tape and try to wrap the affected area on the
break at the tee. Because the roots have actually grown between the lines
slightly, there’s probably enough of a gap that I can slip the tape through to
get all the way around the fitting and still partially attached pipe. The gap
or break in the pipe is probably 1/4” at it’s greatest width, if that.

Anyone else have an idea? At this point I really have nothing to lose as the
sprinkler zone that’s affected hasn’t worked for years from what I can tell.

Can you cut a tee in half and epoxy or solvent weld the pieces to the broken
piece?

I'm really impressed with this stuff.
Permatex 84115 5-minute Plastic Weld Adhesive, 0.84 oz.
They say it doesn't work with polyethylene, but it did great for me. It's
not so runny that it will drip away from where you are trying to join
pipes, unlike JB Weld Plastic Weld, which it runny. Great if you need it to
run inot a joint, not good otherwise. YMMV

Re: [MBZ] OT - Patching PVC Sprinkler Line Hack

2020-04-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Thanks, Don, I may check that out.

What makes this repair especially challenging, other than the roots and such,
is that the pipe has either cracked or pulled out of the tee, so the crack or
opening is right at where the transition from the pipe goes into the fitting -
so I’ve got different diameters to deal with on each end. The tee is intact, so
splitting one and gluing it on top wouldn’t help, unfortunately.

I was thinking about splitting a piece of 1’ PVC to make a sleeve to cover the
crack as much as possible, then maybe find something to go over the whole
repair from the tee to the pipe.

Hmm. Thanks guys! Keep those suggestions coming!

I can try just about anything since this is outside and on a non-potable system.

Not hoarding, just keeping my supplies intact. I would really like to be able
to use all this down time to spend some time at the range and hone my skills,
but my range closed down a couple of weeks ago. Not sure why, as it would be
quite simple to comply with social distancing on the range or shooting clays.

Put an email notice in to my supplier for bulk ammo a couple weeks ago. Nada.

Don,

My local FLAPS has the stuff on the shelf, so I ordered some for pickup
tomorrow morning. I’m thinking I can cut some small scraps of 1” tubing to
place over the crack to close the hole up a bit before I apply the stuff.

This is far simpler than trying to wrap something around it. And if it doesn’t
work, on to the next suggestion!

More as I know it. Thanks!

If it hasn't worked for years, do you really need it to work?

Unless you are going to take the tree out, you will always have problems
with those lines, since the roots will continue to grow and will continue
to distort the pipes and make new breaks.

If you really want it to work, can you rent a trenching machine (as I
have done in the past) and run new lines 15 or 20 feet from the tree to
the area of the affected zone? You would, of course cut and cap the line
from the tree to the affected zone.

Note: 15 or 20 feet from the tree the roots could be 4" in diameter. That
was the case for our house in Los Alamos where a tree on the south
side of the driveway had been cut down because its roots had heaved
the driveway. I rented a backhoe to take out the broken-up driveway
and dug up the stump and its roots on the north side of the driveway
at the same time -- see attached pictures.

Use and old chain/chain saw or a cheap sawsall all and cut the roots. It’s a
bit of work but then it’s done.

What Michael said - I vote for the sawsall, followed by wrapping the break
with heavy cloth saturated with the plastic epoxy, like jeans?

I don’t think so. It has marginal value after you’ve done the repairs, mainly
because of the mileage. 180k and you drop a couple grand fixing it?
