Re: [MBZ] Oldest Son's New Car

2020-07-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I did a “reverse” in a FB buy/sell forum that’s for a very upscale/old rich
white people area nearby that I belong to. Asked if anyone had something to
sell relative to my needs for a vehicle and got a hit:

2013 Escape SE AWD. It’s tarted up pretty well, fresh tires, a six cylinder
with AWD and 105k on the clock. It’s also the first model of a new (3rd)
generation of Escapes, which is a little concerning as is the six cylinder with
AWD. I suspect that takes a bit away from fuel economy and adds a level of
complexity that a 2012 doesn’t have.

The guy offering it is a Nissan line technician at the local Nissan dealer, the
car belongs to his sister in law who is selling because her fiancé got a
company car and gave her his BMW. He maintained the car for as long as she had
it, says the only things he had to do with it were a rear ABS sensor and a fuel
pressure sensor. Otherwise, just straight maintenance.

He’s got it at his place and has a lift if I want to come over and look at it.
She wants $6500 but he said she would jump on $6k.

Have at it, Mitch! I suspect this one is going to be ugly.

I tried that on the SL. Made a little dam from duct tape and squirted

Didn't.  Finally drilled it out.

It’s interesting, as I was talking to one of my neighbors last night. He was
looking for a truck a month or so ago, and he said that he gave up because
there was nothing whatsoever in the private market anywhere he looked. He was
convinced it was due to all the current issues with COVID/shelter in place/job
losses, etc.

While I figured that might be playing a part, I didn’t think it would have that

Headlight wipers are in the correct position. That’s an indicator I use to
identify proper maintenance. Not definitive, but usually means someone is
taking care of the car. If the headlight wipers are all wacky that’s not a good

Got a line on what might be a decent prospect for the eldest:

https://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/cto/d/lithia-2012-ford-escape-xlt-v6/7148700936.html

My only real concern is that it’s a six cylinder rather than the four. Mileage
won’t be as good. On the good side, it’s priced well and has a good history.
Leased vehicle for five years, then the current owner bought it and their
daughter drove it in high school. That and it’s the last year of the second
generation, and has some of the lowest reports of problems as a result.

Even better, it’s only about five miles from my house.

Re: [MBZ] Turd or treasure?

2020-07-02 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Lady week I did a scan on an 05 or 06 SLK for a guy. Seats weren’t working
which was apparently due to the car having been flooded downtown right before
he bought it from some girl. (He saw it in the flood so that was a known
quantity, $2250 which I thought was high, black/black, looked pretty nice, he
had dried it out so it ran OK). Shonuff the seat control modules and Hall
sensors on motors were fried. It had about 100 other historic codes which I
cleared out.

These things are SMALL, lack appeal to me.

New cars are also for the most part very reliable.

If not abused, most any "mass market" car from Ford, Chevy, Japan, Korea
will go well over 100K miles with only minor if any issues.

Exactly. Makes it nice to check and set timing as needed. When I had my 350SD I
used on and found that due to age and wear the pump was off a couple of
degrees. With this I spent more time tightening and loosening fasteners than I
did using the tool.

One of those tools that when you need it, it really makes a difference.

Re: [MBZ] Oldest Son's New Car was W211 Nanny Mania

2020-07-02 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So we went and checked out the 2012 Escape with 137k, two owners, V6, etc.

Very clean car, well maintained, clearly a Ford lease before the current owner
purchased it for his high school aged daughter who put approximately 3,000
miles on it driving to/from home, school and work.

It’s been maintained by a local indie shop I know that caters to a well to do
clientele with a mix of nice domestic and high line cars. I’ll check in with
them tomorrow if they’re open and get the dirt on this car. Owner had all his
records so I pretty much saw everything he had done to it, all by the book and
then some. He has detailed records on it showing it’s averaged around 25 mpg,
which is pretty good with the six and considering daughter’s driving was all
suburban surface streets at or below 45 mph.

They had the sucky Ford telematics yanked and a nice double-DIN Pioneer unit
installed professionally to the point where all of the steering wheel buttons
work with it. It’s nicely done.

It’s got a couple dings and a few stains in the carpet, but nothing a good
Martha’ing can’t resolve.

The guy bought the car for his daughter and clearly cared for it in a manner
you expect.

I’m going to call him in the morning and pull the trigger on it. I think it
will suit the son just fine, he fits in it well and liked it.

Turd. These have minimal value when running. Too bad, as I’ve bene looking for
a yellow SLK320 for the wife for some time. I’ve considered a 230 but it would
have to be a nice one with a good history.

Add one rusty E320 and you have a SLK320 at a nice price.
But it probably needs top hydraulics and a bunch of other stuff.
