There is no point in beating yourself up over things like this. A shop 
might easily have missed the cut as well. It obviously was not something 
that was all that likely given the splash pan and your history with the 
car. Good job in getting it done. Hope the drain plug cooperates in the 
future. Maybe you should consider a drain plug and washer from VW rather 
than Autozone?

while driving. Code was "intermittent implausible value" so I assumed the 
sensor had failed, as that is my experience with VWs. Sensors fail.

Ordered one from FCP Euro, watched a YouTube video, easy enough job: drain the 
oil, disconnect the sensor, remove three nuts holding the sensor in place, pull 
it out, put the new one in, reconnect, refill the oil. Looked like it should 
take 30 minutes max.

I had considered that the problem might be a bad connection but the connector 
was in place, not loose or damaged. So I went ahead with the sensor 
replacement. As I was reconnecting it, out of the corner of my eye I noticed 
what looked like a cut in the split-tube cover on the wiring. Sure enough, 
there was a cut. How in the heck it happened I don't know. The car has a splash 
guard so nothing could have snagged it. I change the oil with the extractor so 
I've never had the splash guard off until today. I guess at some point someone 
had it off and managed to snag it or slice it and cut into one of the wires.

So I didn't need the sensor, but at this point I've already installed it and 
it's all oily so I can't send it back.

I soldered the wire back together and covered the splice with heat shrink 
tubing.

Then I notice that oil is dripping from the drain plug. It was dry when I 
removed it, and I had torqued it back to spec so what the heck. I tightened it 
up more and more until I started to get a little uncomfortable. It has one of 
those sealing washers that was pressed on so you can't easily remove it. So I 
decided to run to Autozone and get a new drain plug and washer. Drain oil 
again, install new plug, refill, and it's still leaking. I finally just kept 
tightening it about 1mm at a time until it finally stopped.

Kicking myself for not looking at the wiring more carefully. Would not have had 
to drain the oil or change the sensor and would have saved a lot of time if I 
had only noticed that cut first.

Their site looks sketchy. They have such random stuff at such ridiculously low 
prices. Where they show methods of payments it looks like a cut and paste of a 
pic of a cut and paste. 
Along these lines, I took a call from Beverly Hills today and the Asian 
sounding lady said she was from Amazon and she was calling to confirm my order 
of four $3000 laptops made on my account today. Of course I laughed maniacally. 
She then said if they were ordered in error she would be glad to cancel the 
order and all I would need to do is give her the card information. I said some 
very bad words to her and hung up. 
“Hung up”….a phrase racing towards 
archaism.

A friend of mine had one of these white/black 4spd 66 230SL. It was showroom 
condition, he bought it in 1968 after blowing up 2 engines in a 66 Corvette he 
bought new. I rode in it a few times. It wasn’t particularly fast but the cool 
factor  of the 4spd and engine singing as he rowed the gears more than made up 
for it.

I went down toward OKC this past weekend to meet up with a guy who is on the 
various Fakebook groups. He wants me to buy out his remaining cars which 
consists of a 300SDL, 2 240Ds, 2 300SDs, and a 380SL. He works on customers 
cars in his garage. In the garage he had one of these he was working on. 

I don’t think I have actually ever seen one in person in real life.

I didn’t end up making an offer on the cars because one of the other guys that 
is all over the Fakebook pages was there. Nice guys.

A lot of the stuff I’ve bought is things like MB brake fluid in the metal cans, 
and they’ll have a ding in them somewhere. I suspect in this case it’s 
liquidators who are buying damaged pallets of the stuff. They’re stiill sealed 
like new, but cost about 30% of what MB sells it for.

That and there’s a guy on the 500E forum who sells boxes of MB factory stuff 
too, like windshield washer detergent. I think I bought a box of 20 tubes of 
the stuff for $20 shipped a year ago. Handy to have on the shelf. I’ve asked, 
but he hasn’t come across any of the winter WW fluid. Too bad, it’s good stuff, 
but pricey.

I’m noticing lately ads on Facebook with pics of pallets of oil and people 
selling it cheaper than normal. I wonder if there is a big surplus of different 
oils and people are buying it and reselling.
