Re: [MBZ] Free flat fixing

MMM plugged a flat tire for me at an OkieQ a couple of years ago. Two, maybe
three. Naw, two I think. ... Anyway, I am STILL riding on that tire and his
repair has held.

*Thank you* MMM.

Gotta love a man who has a tire patch kit in his trunk.

Another attendee (who shall remain nameless) is so anal that he had a TANK
OF AIR in the back of his Benz. *He* needs mental health services (my
field).

Re: [MBZ] Bio

2007-11-08 Thread Wonko the Sane
I disagree (as the father of a Honda Civic hybrid owner).

It doesn't have to do with prices. It does involve feeling better, because
every gallon of fuel we don't burn lessens the grip on our testicles placed
there by OPEC. If I have to pay extra to burn bio then I am willing to do
so.

Biodiesel? Bring it on. I am a vegetarian so don't care how much corn or
soybeans isn't fed to potential dinners.

Re: [MBZ] Bio

2007-11-08 Thread Wonko the Sane
The cost of corn has nothing to do with biodiesel. It has everything to do
with the cost of ethanol.

Here is the drill.

The corn grown here is intended to be fed to livestock. It also makes
ethanol. Market forces determine where it goes.

Soybeans are grown with a similar market. Diesel or pigs, whatever the
market says.

Re: [MBZ] Free anti-virus?

2007-11-24 Thread Wonko the Sane
I have an acquaintenance who owns a computer repair shop here in our small
town.

He told me just last week that 90% of his business was rebuilding trashed
(virus) systems that ran AVG antivirus.

I think ClamAV has been ported from Linux to windows. Still free but
frequently
updated. It does not do real-time virus checking but instead is
intended to be scheduled for scans.

Hendrik:

I was going to let that one pass w/out reply but have decided to not do so.

Humor is an excellent tool in helping to de-escalate tense situations. It is
a good tool for dealing with grief -- something that the list is dealing
with on several fronts.

If Kaleb and Regina were only names on my email list, I wouldn't be so bold
as to try to defuse the tension with humor. Fortunately, I know Kaleb and
Regina well enough, and they know me well enough, that I can say what I said
and know that it will make Kaleb (and probably Regina) have a moment of
chuckle in the midst of unspeakable grief.

This has been a bad week for all of us. We've lost Marshall and I am
honestly still trying to come to grips with that. I was one of a handful
with whom he shared how bad things were and the prognosis. Regina has had a
tragedy, and I know enough of the background to somewhat understand. On top
of that, I lost one of my consumers ("lost" as in she died, not
"lost" as in she wandered away from staff and we can't find her) on Wednesday.

So ... I honestly believe that humor can go a long way toward fixing things.
I've used it to de-escalate psychotic consumers. I've used it to make MR
consumers know that it isn't socially appropriate to do X, when he/she sees
nothing wrong with doing X.

I can understand that from a distance you might think what I said was not
appropritate. Fortunately, I think given the facts (especially regarding
Kaleb and his "hobby") and my relation with Kaleb/Regina, it was in good
taste.

Of course, I am sometimes wrong and I have an ex to prove it! :-)

A trick that has served me well is this: pre-glow one or (if it is really
cold) two times, hit they key, press the "go" pedal, and don't stop cranking
until either the engine starts or the battery quits. That has served me well
down to -20F (w/ block heater).

After fifteen or twenty seconds (sometimes closer to 60), the engine comes
to life.

My experience has been to give the car to the shop the day before, let it
sit overnight in the shop, and they do the adjustment on a cold engine.

But ... I do have a spare diesel car and a motorcycle, too, so am in a

Yea-but ...

Having been an ass('t) manager of a department store, I appreciate that the
important thing isn't discounts, it is daily sales. A lost sale is a lost
sale. HQ doesn't care how it happens. All that shows up on the computer is
that you sold the tv, not what it sold for.

By the way, what the hell does this have to do with owning a Mercedes?

Write back when it gets back to the teens. My 240D starts needing the "long

Ya know, for all we joke about the man (and he was indeed a living parody of
himself), he was really a valuable resource. I think he had a photographic
memory and retained much of what he read in the manuals. I should be so
lucky -- I stick post-it notes to my computer monitor at work on Friday
afternoons so I know what to do the following Monday morning.

Only once did he tell me he had to research the answer to a question, but he
fired the answer back in a very timely manner (after consulting the
manuals).

In one of my last off-list emails to him, not long before the end, I asked
if we could perhaps dump his brain to DVD. He seemed to get a chuckle out of
that and said that he'd unfortunately under-lived that technology but wished
he could.

Looking back at his obit, I realized that he worked at a theater place in DC
that I passed every day going to and from work. Wish I'd known then what I
knew now, for I could have easily pulled into the parking lot and had a chat
with him about the car I'd own a decade in the future. Sorry, a Dr. Who
moment there.

Talking Maine is really pretty easy once you understand the basic rules.

1. Anywhere an R belongs, remove it. (ca', pa'k, ga'age, chu'ch)
2. Anywhere an R does NOT belong, add it. (warsh -- this is also found in
Iowa)
3. Always say "son of a whore" rather than "son of a bitch."
4. Love the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Socks.

These rules served me well through two decades of being married to a Maine
girl (my ex).

[MBZ] hard wiring glow plugs

2007-12-07 Thread Wonko the Sane
About this time of year, my glow plug system gets a mind of its own. Even
Marshall was never able to figure it out via theoretical troubleshooting.

After the temp gets into the low teens, the glow plug light functions only
intermittently. Sometimes it lights up and sometimes it doesn't.

I *think* the plugs are working, because last year I had a voltmeter hooked
up and I could see the load when the plugs are on. (For those who might be
wondering, I've experienced same symptoms on two different glow plug
relays.) When the light didn't work yesterday, I pre-glowed for 45 seconds
and then cranked until it started. The car had been warmed up on the ride to
work but had cooled down some during the four hours of sitting in the
parking lot.

Here's what I am thinking of doing: hard wire +12VDC to the glow plugs and
install a switch so I can manually control the duration of pre-glow (and
know that it is indeed getting heat to the plugs). Weren't some of the
pre-W123 diesels wired up this way? This would be a winter-only
modification, going back to using the glow plug relay during the non-winter
months.

Anyone done this before? What sort of switch should I use? How heavy of a
wire?

You are a very creative and intelligent man, Craig. Great idea. That would
bypass whatever portion of the glow plug relay that says "light up the

2007-12-07 Thread Wonko the Sane
I've been hangin' around in here for so many years that most folks
*know*that I have a '77 240D.

As for troubleshooting the problem, I've spent scores of hours and lots of
bandwidth in past years trying to figure out what's happening. I am now in
"winter survival" mode, since I love close enough to my office to work to
work if necessary but don't really want to do so.

Also, the fact that the problem is intermittent and only happens when it is
so cold that troubleshooting isn't an appealing prospect helps to complicate
things. Whatever is happening is definitely temperature related and it only
happens in "ugly" temps.

Re: [MBZ] Funeral and kids and then some!

2007-12-07 Thread Wonko the Sane
Forgive me for not trimming my post -- difficult to do on this old laptop.

Here is the situation as I see it. We lost Marshall, and will admit that I
got a little emotional. We had exchanged emails during the last months --
blatently honest -- and although I knew the end was coming, the end was
still not easy.

Now, we have a new situation. Three young kids who were born into what is by
definition a bad situation.

I suggest we honor Marshall,
an educator of diverse talents, by rearing a new generation, three recent
additons to OkieLand
with dozens of step-grandparents (all of whom smell slightly of #2
diesel and Mobil 1).

I loved Marshall (in a non-gay sort of way) and can think of no better
legacy to him than channeling our efforts to the next generation. Marshall
was by no means a shallow man -- he understood that we are all temporal and
it is the next generation that has to carry on, and they have to be trained
to change their fuses.

Money diverted to cancer research is important. By gene pool, I will most
likely die of that. But anything we can contribute there is a drop in the
bucket, while real dollars can change some young lives who have endured more
already than I have in 5+ decades (and my life has been sort of ugly at
times).

Re: [MBZ] hard wiring glow plugs

2007-12-07 Thread Wonko the Sane
The truth is that we were in a residential section where most of the
intersections are uncontrolled -- locals know to always glance to the right
(and to the left) at an intersection since the driver on the right has
right-of-way. I didn't want anyone speeding up (even to just 40 mph in a 25
mph zone) trying to stay on my tail, especially when non-Iowa drivers
wouldn't expect to get t-boned at any given intersection. City folks might
expect traffic coming at right angles to have a stop sign or at least a
yield sign. It isn't like that here.

[MBZ] I'm iced up!

2007-12-08 Thread Wonko the Sane
It is cold. Currently +9F outside. Garage doesn't feel any warmer, although
some bottles of water I have sitting on the workbench haven't frozen. I am
going to put a thermometer on the hood of the Benz overnight to see just how
cold he garage is.

Tried starting the Benz this morning. Good battery (was on the Battery
Tender all night long and had a green light). Cranked normal speed. Won't
begin to fire, just turns over. Plugged the block heater in about 1:00 and
let it warm up thru the afternoon. Just tried again, same thing.

I checked the oil and poured in a quart of Mobil 1 this morning (before
trying to start it). Oil was sitting on a shelf not far from the Benz. Still
poured but was sort of a honey consistency.

I am beginning to think my fuel has gelled. I poured plenty of PowerSource
Fuel Conditioner in several days ago and have had a sixty mile round trip
since, plus around-town driving, so stuff is mixed. But the fuel is pure #2
rather than the mix of #1 diesel & #2 diesel that is now in the pumps. ...
But on the other hand, my car has sat outside at work in mid-teen temps
almost all week so strange that nothing happened before.

I think my next line of attack (if the easy ones fail) is to take off the
primary fuel filter, refill with Diesel Purge, and try that. I'd think that
Diesel Purge (maybe mixed with fuel conditioner) would melt any ice
downstream in the lines.

I am just anal-retentive enough to doubt any sudden mechanical problems --
unless something major broke. Think "Felix Unger Owns A 240D."

Shut-off valve is relatively new, hand pump is equally new, fuel lines are
in good condition. Glow plugs upgraded from loop to pencil. I got "good"
pre-glow light on the start attempt. Plugged fuel filter or tank screen
should have showed progressive issues before things went dead.

Gotta be ice or thick #2. Like I said, Mobil 1 15-W-50 poured like cold
honey this morning!

Went out and tried to start after I posted my last email. Car fired right up
-- perhaps the heat from the block heater thawed whatever was frozen. ...
Immediately drove to the fuel station and topped off (5.6 gallons) with
70/30 mix, plus dumped in the other half bottle of PowerService. ... I am
wondering if I shouldn't change out the primary fuel filter as a precaution,
or at least remove and dump in more PowerService.

I put in 1/4 tank (to top it off) last week but I don't think they had
shifted to the winter mix at that point. Probably have mostly #2 diesel with
a little bit leftover of biodiesel (just B-2), plus half a bottle of
PowerSource. ... I am beginning to think water has accumulated in the
primary fuel filter over the summer, and has frozen.

We moved from Florida to Iowa in part because we missed seeing the seasons.
Christmas lights (all white) in palm trees detracts somewhat from the
traditional Christmas spirit. Quite frankly, we grew wear of wearing shorts
year round. Does a body good to shovel snow from time to time. Gotta get a
little frost on the goatee.

Before you send hate mail, I am the only member of my current-generation
family who does *not* live in Florida: parents are in St. Augustine
(Crescent Beach), next brother down is a principal in Palm Coast, baby of
the family is a Secret Service dude living in Ft. Laud. and working in
Miami.

Yea, I cuss and swear when my diesel gels up but I'd not go back to living
in shorts-all-year for anything. I like the seasons. I like winter when it
actually looks like winter. I enjoy raking leaves in my yard and burning
them on the then-harvested garden.

That being said, I turn 55 in a couple of weeks. I am but a decade away from
moving back to Florida, I am sure! It is the law: when you turn 65 the
government requires that you move to Florida and buy a condo.

I am sure I am going to "urinate" some folks off saying this ... but the
deer were here long before we were. They didn't move in on our territory, we
moved in on theirs. Society demands more and more land for big houses and
wider roads, and in that pursuit areas that were formerly wild / farms are
paved over.

I am not sure what the answer is but wholesale slaughter just doesn't appeal
to my ethical side. I could rant on about native Americans and White Man's
Burden, etc., but will instead go make supper (pasta & red sauce).

But I'm a vegetarian and don't hunt (last hunted in the mid 60s) so my views
are really slanted against mainstream thoughts.

Re: [MBZ] hard wiring glow plugs

2007-12-12 Thread Wonko the Sane
Gotta be a plug, Don. Same "gel" symptoms whether outside at 10+F or in a
40+F garage. Valve adjustment isn't too far in the distant past. ... There
was a gradual increase in cranking time during the fall, which to me points
to a failing (now failed) plug. And, if the plugs don't fix it, then I
am screwed and I drive the VW Quantum until it warms up in the spring.

Re: [MBZ] hard wiring glow plugs

2007-12-12 Thread Wonko the Sane
I am hoping it is the glow plug. If not, then it is definitely a gasser in
the garage. If that is the case, I will keep the Benz but will put it into
winter storage.

Quantum is still running fine. In fact, I drove it to work this morning. But
it will probably go on the auction block soon to finance the gasser / winter
car.

As Kleb would say --- hahahahahahahahah. (It has relatively new Goodyear
Regatta 2 tires, so about x7 of your bid and the *tires* would be paid for.)

Had to include them -- got them from Rusty so I am *sure* they were top

2007-12-13 Thread Wonko the Sane
Actually, the most labor intensive and PITA job was draining/dropping the
fuel tank and replacing fuel lines. There was an air leak that was impacting
start times. Even with the tank removed it was difficult to re-plumb. ... I
was quite surprised to find how quickly the car started after the leaking
fuel lines were replaced. I was happy with the results but would not want to
do that task again!

Can't in good faith do that, since the oil isn't Mobil 1.
