Regarding X.Org Endless Vacation of Code (EVoC)-Mentor
Hello Everyone, Greetings! I hope you are doing well. I am Ojus, a final-year IT student. Recently, I discovered EVoC as an open-source enthusiast, and I'm deeply interested in participating in this program. However, I am new to this and am looking for a mentor to guide me through EVoC for a project related to mesa. I would appreciate any ideas or projects for this program, as I am open to learning new skills and facing new challenges. Here is my GitHub ID: https://github.com/ojuschugh1 Could you please guide me on the next steps? I am eager to work under my mentor's guidance. I would appreciate it if anyone could become my mentor and assist me in this endeavor. Thank you in advance for your assistance :D I eagerly await your response. I hope I can be of help to someone in any way ;) Thanks for your help and consideration. Kind Regards, Ojus

[Mesa-dev] Regarding X.Org Endless Vacation of Code
I looked through the project ideas at http://www.x.org/wiki/SummerOfCodeIdeas/ which seemed doable to me. I would like to know more about the following projects - 1. Add support for performances counters in the profiling view 2. GL/GLSL tests for GL 4.0 and newer I have worked on projects using C and OpenGL as a part of coursework in college. Hence I feel I'll be able to work on these projects if I put enough time in it. I am also proficient in Java, Php, Javascript, HTML5 and CSS3 so if there are any projects using these, I would love to look into them as well. I plan to work on a project through EVoC during June and July if my application gets accepted. So till then I would like to spend one month in understanding the project, solving bugs and preparing a good application. Kindly help. Personally I think that going for another project will be better, although others might feel otherwise. 2. GL/GLSL tests for GL 4.0 and newer This topic has come across multiple times. The task entails that you pick up an GL extension (or a few) that are used by GL 4.0+, read through the spec test and write small piglit programs [1] which test the applicable functionality. One is expected to confirm their tests against another GL/GLSL implementation - i.e. run the programs on a GL 4.0+ capable hardware using the Nvida/AMD binary drivers. Note that there is a bit of a hurdle here on the patch review front. So you would be expected interact with the community and find a person interested in mentoring/reviewing your work. I have worked on projects using C and OpenGL as a part of coursework in college. Hence I feel I'll be able to work on these projects if I put enough time in it. According to the EVoC page [2] the student is expected to put three to four months of work. Regardless I would encourage that you try and get a better feel about the projects listed [3] and observe the direction of the current X development. Chilling out in #dri-devel (at FreeNode) and skimming through the dri-devel and mesa-dev mailing lists will help you out. Once you have a better feel on the projects (or idea for another one) just follow the guidelines [4] and submit a proposal. I believe this information is enough to get you in the right direction. Could you point me to the necessary resources which will help me understand the project? It's not really a software project that you can just quickly understand fully. :) Lots of us have been working on it for years and aren't even interested in understanding it fully. 3. Hey Devs , I'm Lakmal ,a Computer Science Engineering student from University of Moratuwa ,Sri Lanka . Next few months going to be my term vacation and I was searching for opportunities where I could get the experience of a real world project while improving my technical skills .X.org Endless Vacation of code seemed to match my targets perfectly . I see *piglit *is written in python. I posses a good knowledge in Python and very much interested in working with the language. That was one of the reason I preferred this project .I would be grateful if anyone of you can provide some more details on how should I proceed further , whether this project would be suitable for a summer project (Of course it is suggested in the summer ideas list :-) .But would like to get a comment on that as well ) and any other technologies I should be familiar with to work with the project . I have my semester exams going on until the end of 3rd week of May . Thanks in advance Hi Lakmal, Glad to hear that you are interested. I would suggest you start by getting familiar with piglit and do a test run or two. Typically, we use the quick-driver.tests suite for testing graphics drivers. Once your are familiar with how piglit works then you can start to take a look at the internals of piglit and how the testing infrastructure for other APIs is designed. This will help you get a sense of the work involved in adding support for OpenCL. There was some work done in the past on adding OpenCL infrastructure to piglit. The code is here: https://github.com/rakadam/piglit It might be useful to take a look at that too. For the OpenCL piglit project, I think the work could be divided up into three major tasks: 1. Add OpenCL infrastructure to piglit 2. Write OpenCL tests 3. Fix the Open Source OpenCL implementation when tests fail Number 3 is optional, but would be a good way to get involved in Open Source driver development. Once you get a sense for what you want to do and how long it might take, you should make a draft of your proposal and send it to the mailing list for some feedback. Most of the piglit developers hang out in the #dri-devel irc channel @ irc.freenode.net, so that is also a good place to go if you have questions. I hope this helps. -Tom On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 8:46 PM, Lakmal padmakumara rclak...@gmail.comwrote: Hi Alex ,Matt Everyone , Thanks for the ideas list Alex.
