[meteorite-list] fusion crust observation

2002-02-20 Thread Dave Harris

Hello listees,
...bit of an obvious observation but I noticed on my Allende individual I
got today (Thanks, Christian!) that the fusion crust is peppered with tiny
holes whereas my Millbillillie crust is a solid (unperforated) glassy coat.
I guess I know why this is ie exgassing during atmospheric entering, butI
was just curious as to what EXACTLY what gases were escaping - water vapour
or whatever.
And therefore the assumption that Millbillillie has far less 'free' gases in
the matrix maybe drawn.
Any comments?

very best!

Hello Dave and List,

These tiny holes (M.M. Grady and M.J. Genge call them vesicles)
are most abundant in the CCs but should also occur in eucrites (up to
about 50 vol%). With regard to the carbonaceous chondrites, their
occurrence suggests formation by evaporation and degassing of C, H,
S, and H2O.

Although the news media hyped up Comet Halley, comparing it to its 1910 return which

wasn't a favorable return that year and being farther from the Earth. So generally

Re: [meteorite-list] fusion crust observation

2002-02-20 Thread EL Jones

Greetings List, Dave,

Gases? Could be a connection but not the reason there is a difference. The
smoothness of Millibillillie is likely accounted for by its distinctly different
chemistry/mineral makeup. Eucrites have a glassy fusion crust because they
are more homogeneous and have already had their gases outgased in the original
melt of formation ( note Ibitria ,however, as an a vesiculated exception .)

Carbonaceous material such as Allende is more loosely consolidated and could be
subject to plucking of small grains during transit (as well as low melting
point material). The voids I see in the crust are irregular cavities so I tend
to discount them as a gas pocket-not saying that they could not be from gas
voids.

Outgasing is a possibility if you consider that the methane in Carbs are locked
in by the cold, one could theorize, and that localized heating liberated some
aromatics and left voids in the crust. However, cutting should liberate
existing pockets also it that were the case and I don't see those cavities
within the sliced sections. These could also be a version of cooling cracks
when the fused material contracts upon cooling. Looks like we need to look
closer at this phenomena.

So, while gas could be involved in Allende's crustal pits, it shouldn't be the
reason eucrites have a smoother crust.

Regards,
Elton

[meteorite-list] Bright Meteor Over Ohio

2002-02-20 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.dispatch.com/news-story.php?story=dispatch/weather-story.phptime=1014094800

Bright meteors like last week's are rare
Dispatch.com (Ohio)
February 19, 2002

I was among the lucky ones who saw the brilliant meteor streaking across the
northern sky at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

My wife and I and another couple were driving through Grandview Heights after
having dinner at a Downtown restaurant.

The meteor was seen by lots of people and widely reported afterward.

It was the brightest meteor I've ever seen. I've seen a ton of those little slivers
of light that I call falling stars or shooting stars.

A few years back I was driving north on Rt. 315 when I saw a meteor blaze
across the sky over the Ohio State University campus. That one looked to be the
size of a fiery baseball arching across the sky.

The one on Wednesday was so bright that the guy with me said it looked like a
burning airplane crashing toward the horizon.

Tom Burns, director of Perkins Observatory in Delaware County, said
Wednesday's meteor was traveling about 100,000 mph, 40 to 50 miles above
Michigan and Canada.

Folks up there heard its sonic boom.

Burns estimated the meteor might have been the size of a filing cabinet. It made
so much light because it ionized the air around it as it sped along and burned up in
the atmosphere.

You're not really seeing the object, you're seeing the air around it, Burns said.

That object may have been floating around in space for 5 billion years, since the
beginning of the solar system, and now it is no more.

I told Burns I remember every bright meteor I've ever seen. The latest fireball
burned itself into my memory.

I've seen maybe eight as bright as you described, Burns said. They stick in my
memory the rest of my life. The first one you see, you'll never forget and the last
one you see, you'll never forget. It's a lifetime experience.

The reason so many people saw this meteor was because it happened on a clear
night over a populated area in the early evening.

Somewhere on Earth every single night of the year there is a fireball that bright,
Burns said. A trillion particles enter the Earth's atmosphere every day.

Most are not seen, though, because much of the planet is not occupied and clouds
can screen them.

The best time for a meteor to be noticed is between 7 and 9 p.m. in the winter
when people are still up and around, he said.

Jamie responded:

Hello Matteo, Jamie, and List,

Unfortunately there is no crater information in the 5th issue of the
Catalogue. Those among us who still have access to the BBB (the
Big Blue Book = 4th edition of the Catalogue) know that Eagle Butte
is mentioned as a doubtful feature:

A disturbed area, 10 km in diameter and 30-40 million years old, may be
meteoritic, P.B. Robertson and R.A.F. Grieve, Journ. Roy. Astron. Soc.
Canada, 1975, vol. 69, p. 1, but compare T.B. Haites and H. van Hees,
Journ. Alberta Soc. Petrol. Geologists, 1962, vol. 10, p. 511. Bore
holes and electric log data for the structure, H.B. Sawatzky in, Impact
and Explosion Cratering, eds. D.J. Roddy, R.O. Pepin and R.B. Merrill,
Pergamon Press (New York), 1977, p. 461.

... and, to make matters worse, it is also mentioned in a list of known
terrestrial impact craters in an article by the famous R.A.F. Grieve:

GRIEVE R.A.F. (1991) Terrestrial Impact: The Record
in the Rocks (Meteoritics 26-3, 1991, 175-194).

The author does not explicitly state whether it is to be considered
doubtful or not whereas the BBB entry clearly says so :-(

BUT:

Let's now have a look at some highlights of Mr Schimpf's tirade. A
look at some key words will suffice, and, ... incidentally Mr Schimpf's
family name (probably of German descent) can be translated by rant
or rave - once again, nomen est omen :-)

And now for the key words:

 IDIOT! - liars - hell - penis - ass - stupid
empty space in your head - rediculous (note
the spelling!) - sorry ass - big mouth - ass

And now your homework, boys and girls:

Would you please write a short summary about Schimpf
and Schande, in English about ranting and shame

:-)

Matteo,

Please forward Frau Doctor's email address to me. If you feel so inclined,
please forward to the list as well.

As I have not seen the emails she mentions which you sent I can not comment
on the harassment angle. Still, I believe she has crossed the line and has
not given you the due respect you deserve.

I would like to email her and ask why this meteorite has not been recognized
by the Geological Survey of Canada and who at the U of Calgary will
authenticate it.

They are genuine! ALSO, he does not require a permit

to get your small minded theories on to an e-mail to
irritate people you don't even know and make a

These meteorites are for real so I suggest you get a

good at, because you obviously can't tell genuine
material from the empty space in your head. One more
thing, IF it were illegal to sell these items on
e-Bay, e-Bay would have sent notification of such, not
only this but there are numerous Professors,
Geologists, Paleontologists, etc., etc. who watch
e-Bay like hawks to ensure that Alberta's protected

internet. A good friend and collegue of mine has
contacted this seller to let him know that he was not
to sell some of his other items due to protectability
under the Alberta Government, for example, dinosaur
bones I believe you notably criticized as being
'cattle bones' (if my recollection serves me
correctly). This seller has sent me numerous copies of
your rediculous e-mails, I gave him all the
information he needed to deal with your sorry ass and
now you're taking up my time. I write this letter not
as a professional but as a friend, so please, don't go
opening your big mouth to people you don't know, when
you don't know what you are talking about; that is
unless you enjoy making an ass out of yourself.

Do not try to contact me again, I WILL have you

 obstruction of a sellers auctions.

 Sincerely,

[meteorite-list] Science Fair Project

2002-02-20 Thread Tettenborn

Dear List,

My name is Alex Tettenborn and I am doing a Grade 7 science fair project on
the possibility of meteorites contributing to the development of life on
earth. I plan to place algae and plant seeds in water with crushed
Murchison meteorite, and observe rate of growth compared to the control
samples (distilled water and crushed pumice). I got this idea from the
latest Meteorite magazine. I think that the Murchison meteorite will
enhance the growth of both the plants and algae because many essential
nutrients and organic molecules have been found in carbonaceous chondrites.

I would like your opinion on my experiment and my hypothesis and any other
observations on Murchison meteorites and other carbonaceous chondrites.

I would also like to thank Russ from the New England Meteorological Services
for the generous donation of Murchison meteorite crumbs.

[meteorite-list] Geologists Weary, But Elated by Chicxulub Drilling Operations

GEOLOGISTS WEARY, BUT ELATED BY CHICXULUB DRILLING OPERATIONS
From Lori Stiles, UA News Services, 520-621-1877
February 20, 2002

The drilling crew on the Chicxulub Scientific Drilling Project near Merida,
Yucatan, Mexico, has been doing a fantastic job, last week recovering
between 35 and 40 meters of exceptional core samples each day, according to
a University of Arizona scientist and co-investigator on the project.

The Chicxulub Scientific Drilling Project (CSDP) is an international project
to core 1.8-kilometers into an immense crater created by the impact of an
asteroid or comet 65 million years ago. The Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) impact
is thought to have led to one of the greatest mass extinctions in Earth
history, including dinosaur extinction.

Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) is the lead institution on
the $1.5 million, approximately 2-month project. The goal is to discover
what the impactor was and the details of the catastrophic impact that wiped
out more than 75 percent of all plant and animal species on Earth.

The crew is drilling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at a far faster pace
that we ever thought possible, said UA planetary scientist David A. Kring.
We had hoped to recover as much as 25 meters of core samples each day, but
at the rate they are drilling, we will probably reach depths of 1.5
kilometers by the end of the project, despite the loss of a diamond drill
head earlier in this effort.

The CSDP drilling team members are from DOSECC (Drilling, Observation, and
Sampling of the Earth's Continental Crust, Inc.), and Pitsa, a drilling
contractor in Mexico.

We are getting a 100 percent core-recovery rate, Kring added. Scientists
by such drilling operations often recover only between 50 percent or 60
percent, and sometimes as little as 20 percent, of intact core samples, he
said.

The drilling crew hands each core barrel pulled from the crater to onsite
geologists who then remove and process the core samples.

Kring and UA undergraduate student Jake Bailey last week helped relieve
their tired Mexican colleagues in onsite geology duties, working 12-hour
shifts. Kring worked a 28-hour stretch as well.

When Kring left Chicxulub last Saturday night, the team had drilled to more
than 1.2 kilometers (4,200 feet).

Kring, director of the NASA/UA Space Imagery Center, has posted photographs
and more details on recent operations on the Space Imagery Center website at
http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/SIC/news/chicxulubl.html

2002-02-20 Thread Ron Baalke

Space Adventures Team Discovers Over 30 Meteorites In Antarctica
Space Adventures Press Release
January 29, 2002

Arlington, Va. -- The Space Adventures team of private
explorers discovered 33 meteorites during a meteorite recovery expedition in
the Thiel Mountains of Antarctica. The recovered meteorites, which vary in
size and shape, could possibly contain evidence of extraterrestrial life,
and will be made available through the Planetary Studies Foundation (PSF)
for study by NASA scientists.

The meteorite recovery expedition was led by Professor Paul Sipiera, a
planetary geologist and meteorite expert from Harper College in Illinois.
The explorers, who have spent eight days hiking and camping in harsh
Antarctic conditions in search for meteorites, have returned home. A daily
record of the expedition can be accessed online at

http://www.spaceadventures.com/terrestrial/antarctica.

During the first day in the Thiel Mountains, the team found their first
meteorite within hours, a 20-gram chondrite fragment with a fusion crust
over half of it. Each search was successful in recovering additional
meteorites of various sizes and textures. Some of the meteorites found are
completely covered by a fusion crust and appear to be rare.

The expedition's objectives were threefold. In addition to meteorite
recovery, ice samples have been collected as part of a microbiology study
for the University of Innsbruck (Austria), NASA's Marshall Space Flight
Center and the University of Alabama. The third project was an educational
outreach effort that connected students from Chicago-area elementary schools
and Harper College with team members via satellite and online forums.

I am proud to say that the expedition team has achieved all three missions
with a high degree of success, stated Professor Paul Sipiera, the
expedition leader.

The expedition was offered in partnership with PSF and Adventure Network
International (ANI), the only organization in the world providing
private-sector services to the Antarctic interior since 1985.

For interviews with team members please contact Tereza Predescu at

[meteorite-list] A Rock in a Hard Place (Willamette Meteorite)

2002-02-20 Thread Matson, Robert

BACK IN 1998, the American Museum of Natural History hacked a
25-pound chunk and a smaller nub off its famed Willamette Meteorite
and traded it for a mere 20-ounce piece of Mars.
That's it. No draft picks. No cash. No meteorite to be named
later. Just the 20-ounce Martian pebble. Think about it: Twenty ounces
of Mars (Mars! It's so close that it's practically the Hamptons!) for
more than 25 pounds of a rock that may date back to the beginnings of
time? That's the meteorological equivalent of Nolan Ryan for Jim
 Fregosi.

Obviously Mr. Kuntzman doesn't get it. If he had done his research,
he'd have found that other than its size and Native American controversy,
the Willamette iron is hardly unique. Willamette is barely an also-ran
when compared to irons like Hoba and Cape York. And what the hell does
he mean by a rock that may date back to the beginnings of time??? What
a crock. Most meteorites are as old if not considerably older than
Willamette.

Over a pound of Mars for 25 pounds of iron? AMNH got a screaming deal
IMHO... --R

The saddest part of this auction besides the fact
that the seller has not got a clue is that the current high bidder has purchased
2 real meteorites from Ivan recently.

I wonder if I could get in trouble with Ebay if I

experts are saying about this auction?

He did pay $265.00 for an 1800+ gram Sikhote so
maybe he is wealthy

Awfully touchy, aren't they? Wonder just how many enquiries they've
gotten from collectors wanting more information on their mystery rock.

If you're selling diamonds and someone wants a GIA appraisal to make
sure they aren't buying glass, that's not unreasonable. Ranting about
it just makes you more suspect IMHO.

Re: [meteorite-list] A Rock in a Hard Place (Willamette Meteorite)

2002-02-20 Thread SSachs9056

Robert and List,

I agree. And what's more, Gersh Kuntzman in his article writes:

Two years ago, in a move that sent shockwaves through virtually no one
except the small community of meteorite collectors...

My...my... how that seems to make us out as a bit petty and clannish.

Kuntzman also should realize that if it wasn't for this small community
many smaller museums would go begging for specimens. Some museum meteorite
collections do come from private collectors that have passed on, or at the
very least, have been made available to museums. But public interests seem
lie in dinosaurs, fossils, anything one can put a face on, or reduce to a
simplistic Saturday morning cartoon.

The article also comes across as a bit glib and cheeky to suit my tastes.

My two cents.

2002-02-20 Thread Rhett Bourland

Hey, not trying to put ourselves up to the same level as the GIA but people
like this are the reason that Ron, Jim, Anne, Steve, Anne, and I created the
IMCA. So far, quite a few of the larger dealers have joined as well as many
people who just collect and sell extra pieces from their private collcetion
when they upgrade. Its also pretty safe to say that most of you have also
probally seen one of the logos that Jim made on eBay and/or different
people's websites. What's so great about all of this is that if you see
someone using our logo then you know that they're constantly being watched
by all the other 90 or so members to know that they're being honest and that
this person would not be allowed to stay a member unless they can have their
rocks classified by a respected lab.
If you've not seen our website feel free to check it out at
www.meteoritecollectors.org and if you want to join just make sure you're an
honest enough person and email me privately.

[meteorite-list] Re: Ad New Carion Book

2002-02-20 Thread Mikestockj
Hi All
I had a great time in Tucson and was quite happy to see the new and updated second edition of Alain Carion's book "Meteorites". Fortunately for us "one language only" people it has been translated into English by our very own Anne Black.
The book is a softcover and contains only 36 pages. It does include several black and white photos of some rarely seen meteorites. I will sell them for $9.00 plus shipping.
I was also able to score several unread copies of the sold out first edition. Not even Alain has any of these. If any one is interested I'll sell these for $9.00 plus shipping as well. If you are truly a hard-core book collector I'll sell both editions for $16.50 plus shipping. Remember you will probably never see this 1st edition in this condition for sale again.
Let me know as soon as possibly if you want the older edition by itself or in combination with the new one as I have a limited number available.
It is quite an exciting time for meteorite books as there are several other new books coming out in the next few months. We will be selling these books and will offer great savings as well as additional incentives. So if you are interested in books please join our Yahoo groups to have the most up to date info on these new books at Yahoo! Groups : Jensen-Meteorites

[Fwd: [meteorite-list] A Rock in a Hard Place (Willamette Meteorite)]

2002-02-20 Thread gle

DEAR GERSH, I'm forwarding the following message to you in the spirit
that you might learn a thing or two. Your piece was light, flippant, and
generally well written. But, you are such a flaming smartass- How do I
know? I have a 24 year son just like you. Yes indeed, I do know!-
REGARDS, GRANT ELLIOTT
---BeginMessage---

IMHO... --R

[meteorite-list] Re: Science Fair Project

2002-02-20 Thread J.B. Goleman

Hi Alex: What a wonderful demonstration of the advancement of science!
Compare your Murchinson meteorite fragments as the source of organic
molecules to the source used in my classroom plant growth rate
experiment more than a few years ago - the manure pile behind the local
stable. In the interest of enhancing the validity of your plant growth
rate factor experiment, I suggest that you consider adding a third
subject - one utilizing fragments of another meteorite - a common
chondrite not known to be bearing essential nutrients and organic
molecules such as found in Murchinson. I hope that one of the
scientists on the Meteorite List will explain to you, in artful
language, exactly what (I intuitively feel) will be the benefit of such
an addition. In any event, please report your findings to the List. Good
luck, Joel Goleman...P.S. I hope that your organic molecules work half
as well as mine did!
